  • Excellent place to find first aid kits. Zombies frequently check inside.
  • Portable Generators have a use other than powering the lights and increasing search probability in hospitals. Players with the Surgery Skill can heal for 15 HP if the Hospital has a fueled up Generator.
  • Hospitals can be barricaded normally.
  • Among the internal descriptions found in Hospitals:
    • "...its wards and corridors blackened with the soot of a recent fire"
    • "...its empty wards criss-crossed with snapped quarantine tape."
    • "...one of the city's psychiatric hospitals."
    • "...dark corridors leading through abandoned wards."
    • "...its emergency room in disarray."

Emma General Hospital

Description

A dark grey stone building of confusing dimension: it is said that to stare too long at these walls will give you the feeling that a rusty nail has been driven through your forehead, which may explain why people feel compelled to tell such bizarre stories about the place. There are 90 rooms, not including the laboratory wing, the lockdown zone with its padded cells, the cockroach plagued kitchens, the children's ward dormitories, the sunken basement "therapy rooms" and the secret stairwells/corridors of many doors that lead down even deeper into the tombs of madness. Written above the main gates are the Latin words "IDEO FUGIAT A TE OMNIS OBSCURITAS. SIC HABEBIT GLORIAM TOTIUS MUNDI." ("I was flying from all shadows. So you all the world.")

History

Emma General Hospital

Questionable Founding

Anecdotal tales and urban legends aside, Emma General Hospital has a very old and very dark history. Arkham's first hospital entirely dedicated to research on the criminally insane (founded by the great Eric Lovecraft Zann, surgeon-general) opened its doors some 90 years ago, and was one of the only buildings in Arkham to be untouched by the flames of the Great Fire of 1912[1]: a barbaric place, a dirty bedlam where the poor, neglected and otherwise outcast from society were left at the mercy of the new sciences of psychoanalysis, primitive pharmacology and experimental brain surgeries. Electro-convulsive shock treatments, madshirts (aka straitjackets), restraining chairs, isolation tanks and sleep deprivation were advocated by the first generation of doctors, all of whom sought to make a name for themselves in this brave new field: Curing The Mad.

How it escaped human rights activism is not known. What is known is that at some point the first wave of doctors and scientists were replaced by an even more zealous generation. The great grandson of Eric Lovecraft Zann [2] took residency there as head of psychiatric medicine, and began what is now understood to be the most foul reign of black science ever perpetrated by a living soul.

Enter Arkham Zann

Emma General Hospital was famous for many years as the laboratory of Arkham Zann, head of psychiatric medicine; now made infamous as a stone-cold killer. Once a brilliant, highly-celebrated neurosurgeon, Zann succumbed to obsession and subsequent madness sometime before the fall of Malton. His experiments with the soft jellied brains of mental patients are legend. Sickening tales of neocortex sutures and electrode cauterization still shock even the most hardened veteran of the Malton apocalypse, and his name is whispered with both reverence and as a curse in Malton's other asylums. In an act of near-perfect justice, Zann's reign of horror ended finally at the gates of the hospital in a hail of bullets. He is buried in the cemetery just northwest of the main entrance. His gravestone is frequently defaced with graffiti to this day. In death, mockery comes easy to those who would have quivered in fear at the sight of his scalpel. One would hope he would never rise again and resume his rule...

After Zann

In the last years before the zed plague, many attempts were made to reform practices at Emma General: but given the often extremely violent criminals incarcerated within its walls, and overcrowded prisons elsewhere, the institution remained as it was: an anachronism, a place of sometimes lethal experimentation. It is rumoured that laboratories exist deep in the bowels of Emma General where terrible bloodletting machines and magnetic pulse devices can still be found, leaking an evil electric hum that in and of itself would drive a sane human to murder. It is perhaps a blessing that the zeds rose from the graves of Arkham, because it served to free Emma General from a terrible legacy of pain and suffering that made a zombie apocalypse look like a damn picnic.

Barricade Policy

Because of its central location in the suburb and its importance to survivors, Emma General is to be maintained at VS+2. Please do not over-barricade except under emergency conditions.

Current Status

December 18, 2012 - Quick organized raid by the dead left two (2) survivors dead and the building ransacked. --Jackson 5 06:20, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

May 12, 2009 - 1 zombie outside.

May 10, 2009 - After a zed attack humans gathered and retook it. It is now overbaric.

January 15, 2009 - Too quiet. A tiny gathering of Z's (no greater than 3, and most likely victims of the Scurvy plague running rampant in New Arkham) outside the hospital has been quelled with minimal injury or trouble. Emma General Hospital is now maintained at VSB until such time as the Scurvy breach Old Arkham, in which case we may increase temporarily. However, for the time being we able to attend to the sick and the traumatized without the need for free-running, have an operational generator and enough fuel to last us a few weeks. I am initiating a radio service early February. In other news, a recent crop of 8 human skulls and 3 human skeletons has been installed in Ward B, both for science/education's sake, and as a warning to others who may cross purposes with our "other" research/work. --Zann 10:31, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

December 30, 2008 - Very quiet. No Z's anywhere in the vicinity (3 blocks NSEW). Hospital is over-barricaded as usual (EHB+), but I blame myself, as the lobotomy patients appear to have been let loose in the corridors of the hospital in my absence... and they are so very afraid of the dark.--Zann 10:29, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

December 23, 2008 - There's one lone Zed outside, and it's me, clawing at the walls.--Zann 14:10, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

December 2, 2008 - There will be blood. Lots of blood. And the walls must fall. (EHB). --Zann 15:12, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

July 28, 2008 (Black Monday) - In rage, mainly because it was a Monday, Arkham Zann bought down the barricades, destroyed the hospital and lead in the murder of its unenlightened, overbarricading inhabitants. It is now once again under his control. --Zann 14:39, 28 July 2008 (BST)

April 26, 2008 - Loosely barricaded with 18 zombies lurking outside. Need help. --Ira Wiefel 18:37, 26 April 2008 (BST)

April 20, 2008 - The prodigal son, Arkham Zann, has returned home, and will be on call for "therapeutic medicine" until further notice. --Zann 08:28, 20 April 2008 (BST)

March 12, 2008 - "...and The Dead shall outnumber the living..." --Lektroluv 02:40, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

September 20, 2007 - GK'd by Butts McDoogle, shoot on sight --Pgunn 21:06, 20 September 2007 (BST)

September 7, 2007 - Emma General is now ransacked with a group of 8-10 mixed inside and out. Advise an entry point be shifted until a team can get the building repaired and rebarricaded. Xiao Weng 14:23, 7 September 2007 (BST)

August 22, 2007 - Under pressure by a small group of feral zombies. Breakins are common, and although the hospital is usually reclaimed fairly quickly, survivors are advised to seek shelter in less descript safehouses. --WanYao 14:12, 22 August 2007 (BST)
