Evershed Cinema

Description

A modest brick structure of moderate size, looking oddly much like a bar. If not for the traditional movie theater sign hanging outside, it would be mistaken for an entirely different kind of establishment.

History

Origins

The cinema was built in a joint collaboration between the Malton Cricket Club and the Derbyshire County Cricket Club in October 1939, in memory of Sir. Sydney Evershed, a wealthy brewer and former cricket player, who had died a few months earlier. He, along with his brothers Wallis, Edward and Frank Evershed, had for several years played for Derbyshire. In 1935, he donated a suspiciously large amount of money to the Malton City Council, as well as to the Malton Cricket Club.

The cinema, which along with Barwood Walk was named as a tribute to him, originally showed recordings of famous cricket matches. Eventually other sports, such as soccer and tennis, was added to the establishment's repertoar.

By 2005, the cinema had almost entirely left its origins, showing just about every genre available. It faced serious competition from the many local rivals, Wolters Cinema and Batt Cinema in particular. Of course, this rivalry quickly dissolved, as the zombie plague came into effect.

Recent history

The cinema has since then been ransacked and ruined countless times, most notably during the many sieges of Tynte Mall.

In 2010, Evershed Cinema was the location of several broadcasts from the Voice of Order.

Barricade Policy

The building is to be kept at Extremely Heavily Barricaded, due to its low strategical importance, as per the Pimbank Barricade Plan.
