Factory 6,82

Description

The factory in wartime.

A collection of corrugated iron-roofed Nissen huts, with whitewashed walls and an Arctic chill inside.

The ghosts of cheerful, busty women, their hair tied in handkerchiefs and their hands coarsened by engine oil, can sometimes be heard telling ribald jokes to one another.

History

Before the outbreak, this factory in Foulkes Village produced parts for aeroplanes, primarily engines. The most famous aeroplane to use the engines made here was named the Foulkes Flyer in honour of its origin, and was flown to great effect in the Battle of the Atlantic by 'Buffy' Dwyer, whose monument stands nearby.
