User:DanceDanceRevolution

I'm DanceDanceRevolution and I would like to put myself forward for Sysop.

I've been on UDWiki for around 11 years, with my edit rate generally mirroring the activity levls of the wiki over that time. Between 2009 and 2011, I was a sysop. I spent 12 months of that time as a bureaucrat.

I would describe myself as someone who enjoys visiting UDWiki and being involved in several aspects of the community. I frequent protections and deletions, engage in problem solving with issues between groups and users, and also help the newer users of the wiki understand the rules and norms, particularly as they engage with the community on heightened levels. I also surf random articles periodically and try to clean them up, or fix things that are either outdated or overlooked. I have recently taken to writing quick content on random location stubs on the wiki when I have downtime (example). It's satisfying. I wish I had started years ago.

Why do I want to be a sysop, and why now? Well, I've been saying for years that we have a very solid sysop team. That hasn't changed. But I do feel like I have value to offer with the week-to-week workload of the sysop group. I have a good memory of administration precedents and I'm fairly efficient at finding them. I don't stray from difficult cases until they are done, and I treat every user fairly as long as they are using the wiki for it's primary purposes.

Why now? The sysop team is only set to get smaller in the next 6 months, and I think it's already as barebones as an admin team should be. I know I can help out, and I believe more people should be applying if they believe they are qualified and want the responsibility.

Please ask any questions, anything on your mind. I've been on this wiki a long time. If there's any questions you have regarding my prior work on the wiki or how I might respond to future hypotheticals, do ask.

Do be honest. All feedback will be considered strongly, regardless of the outcome of this bid.

Thank you for your time. THE CENTRAL SCRUTINIZER 11:03, 30 July 2018 (UTC)

  • Vouch partially for old time's sake (okay, maybe solely for that) but DDR was always a solid sysop and user back in the day, and if anything, the past ~10 years have probably mellowed him a little. I can see that he's still actively contributing, including in the boring admin things. Another sysop who can be trusted to process these promptly is never a bad thing. Not that it matters these days, but I trusted him back in the day to deal with the stupid drama this wiki used to throw up. Ultimately, extra good sysops harm nobody, and DDR was definitely good at being a sysop and good at doing tedious admin shit (anyone got a link to the UDwiki contribs graph that you made back in the day?). I forgot I had made graphs, but indeed I did find them. They aren't well-designed, but they indicate I made ~12000 edits between February 2009 and November 2009. You pulled in 8500. What lives we must have had. THE CENTRAL SCRUTINIZER 11:42, 30 July 2018 (UTC)
  • Vouch We really need a sysop with a solid vandalism background - dirty cops always get the job done. That said DDR has proven to be both neutral and very informative. He challenges the other sysops which would make him a good asset to future decisions from the team. -- King AudioAttack (talk) 23:58, 30 July 2018 (UTC)
  • Are you willing to change your username to Aichon once he leaves? (However, someone may need to change their username to DanceDanceRevolution, and so forth...) --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 00:34, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
You've put me in an awkward position because he's the crat on this nomination so now the following is going to sound insincere, but the answer is I would, if I were anything like the sysop Aichon is, but we are different types of administrators and I don't think I could do Aichon's name justice. THE CENTRAL SCRUTINIZER 10:09, 31 July 2018 (UTC)
  • Vouch There is no doubt that DDR knows the job, and that we should force any qualified users into the sys-op position when they are so foolish as to step into the shackles themselves. I just demand that he takes an oath at the pain of eternal damnation by the RNG God of Malton to never ever promote Thad again. -- Spiderzed 16:15, 31 July 2018 (UTC)

I'd be happy to take the oath, but never say never... THE CENTRAL SCRUTINIZER 12:59, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
  • Question I've been giving sysops who are relatively active on Discord ops on the UDWiki Discord server. Would you be ok with me giving you ops if/when you're promoted? Bob Moncrief EBDW! 12:34, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
I'm happy to take the added role as admin on the UDWiki Discord server. I believe that in circumstances like these, Sysops should be automatically promoted to an ops position, and have it act as an extension of their responsibilities on the wiki. This was actually my main reasoning behind a 2009 arbitration case that I settled between two IRC channels claiming to be the official channel of UDWiki. In the end, my ruling hinged on the fact that one of them automatically promoted sysops to admin the channel, where the other did not (and refused to do so when asked). THE CENTRAL SCRUTINIZER 12:59, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
I will also clarify that in the time that's passed, I don't actually agree with the ruling that I made on that case (as I don't think an "official" UDWiki server on any platform should exist without Kevan's endorsement), but I'm providing the link to show that I've believed what I stated for some time now. THE CENTRAL SCRUTINIZER 13:03, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
Great! Question What is your ideal size (number of members) for the sysop team at this point? Bob Moncrief EBDW! 12:12, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
I think the number of active ops is more important than the overall group. Stelar's bid was an example where it's good for ops to have coverage around the timezones, but also being able to have (at the least) a core team to rule on cases within 24-36 hours is important too. Personally, a larger team (9 or 10), with a core team of 5 actively on the wiki at any one time is a size that I have experienced the most satisfying teamwork. In the wiki's current state, that can be lower, but I wouldn't want a team of regular ops to be 3 or less. For a brief time, I did 2, and it's a time I don't look fondly on.
But it's also important that those sysops are good too. I've had worse experiences in large teams that had bad operators than in smaller teams with a good core group. I think we've been lucky: in 10 years, we've rarely had to consider lowering the standards of our operators just to make up the numbers, and I think valuing quality over quantity has been key to that. The two week period has finished, which means the comment period has closed. Aichon and I will discuss the bid and get back to you all shortly. stelar Talk|MCM|EBD|Scourge 12:37, 13 August 2018 (UTC)

It’s pretty clear that there’s widespread community support for DDR’s bid. Stelar and I really didn’t have much to discuss since we’re in agreement as well. Promoted. Congrats, DDR, and welcome back to the team! Aichon 02:16, 16 August 2018 (UTC)

Thanks Aichon and to all those who have shown trust in me. I'm excited to do my best in justifying the faith you've shown to me. THE CENTRAL SCRUTINIZER 11:49, 16 August 2018 (UTC)
