History

This park was named in honor of George Unwin, a RAF pilot who was awarded the DSO, DFM and Bar. During the Battle of Britain, Wing Commander Unwin stopped a massive German aerial bombing raid from hitting civilian and industrial centres in Malton, a industrial center crucial to Britains war effort.

For a brief time, a newspaper seller sold lottery tickets here.
It was renowned for never selling a winning ticket, not even a scratch-off.
