|-
|Dr. Martin Arrowsmith was once a respected neural immunologist of the McGurk institute. Originally, he was contracted to Necrotech for research in a vaccine during the earliest outbreaks. Although Martin has become very familiar with the specifics of the virus, he was bitten and infected by an enraged zombie subject while testing reactions to a certain enzyme.

The zombie had, in fact, been another employee of Necrotech who became infected. Since there was no cure yet, Martin kept the incident discreet. He did not say goodbye; he merely walked calmly to the elevator and out the front door-- without notifying Necrotech Corporate. He knew he'd become a test subject if his infection was known. He assembled and mailed all his research to his most trusted colleague, then ran away to the darkest corners of Malton to do his best to fight the infection. With some of his enzymatic research, Martin discovered how to slow down his inevitable transformation, but could not stop it. It wasn't long before he drifted into that grey nightmare.

Those grey times are now only flashes of horrifying pictures in his mind. One day, he awoke in Dulston's Anne General Hospital, fully human once again. Someone had found a cure! Not everything was sunny again; ever since, he's had a guilty conscience over the horrifying scenes in his head which he didn't have control over, and can't fully remember. While many survivors retain full control and memory across zombie and human forms, Arrowsmith believes his inhibitor serum, which slowed his infection, also caused an abnormal reaction in the zombie brain--suppressing neural activity (such as memory) and catalyzing extreme, violent emotional responses. In other words, his zombie self had a bad case of amnesia and the desire to make everything that moved suffer. Now a member of DITPS, Martin is working to undo all the grief caused by the zombie affliction--including that which he caused, himself.
|-
|Martin Arrowsmith is a man of many words. He has written a few books, mainly fiction, but he is noteworthy for his biography of Vicar Ilia Sparovich, a close friend from Pennville. He frequents the Featherstone Library, reading anything he can get his hands on. He has also published his own rebuttal to the DITPS "official" historical archive.

Recently, Arrowsmith was given the chief-of-staff position of St. Anacletus's Hospital in Dulston. So far, no problems have arisen other than a slight coup with Deathwire, who declared revolution. However, things are back to the way they were.
Sparo was once the esteemed student and vicar of Anton Steinbrecher, the famous peacemaker, theologian, and head minister at St. Gall's Church--before things when all wrong. The son of a Polish immigrant and a lost-upon-arrival Russian mail-order bride, Ilia had a bit of a strange upbringing. From an early age, he was very intelligent and raised with fear and training in the LORD. He'd made up his mind to be a priest.

Beginning ministerial training early at age 14, Ilia studyed independantly with Steinbrecher (who was a family friend), but dropped those studies after he was accepted into the esteemed Malton Medical College at age 16. Although he studied medicine, he studied philosophy and ethics independantly; he eventually graduated at age 21 with twin degrees in Medicine and Bio-Ethics. Ilia Sparovich recieved a law degree two years later, but quit practice after his parents died in a house fire. Not long after, his brother was confined to a mental institution, starting Ilia on a long and serious personal crisis. He returned to ministerial school, where his friend and teacher, Steinbrecher, was impressed with his spiritual growth and decided to take him (now 23) as a vicar.

For a brief time under Steinbrecher, Ilia's anguish was relieved. Steinbrecher gave Ilia the responsibility of the youth ministry in Pennville, which brought joy to the young man. Yet, Anton Steinbrecher fell ill one Sunday, forcing his protege and vicar, Ilia Sparovich, to take over all the duties of head minister for a time. At that time, the outbreaks had just begun, but few knew anything about them. Not long after, Ilia became a legend of Pennville.
OTHER Rumors:
*Ilia is considered a jack of all trades. He's held many unrelated jobs: a journalist, lawyer, EMT, research assistant, appliance repairman, various factory or construction positions, and semi-professional musician.
*Ilia loves to grab a pint at The Colsworthy Arms. Maybe you'll see him there!
*Ilia spent an extended time as a wandering blood-thirsty zombie, but managed to regain his composure before his brain became to permanently rotten. Since then, he's learned to have compassion even on the repentant zombie. He believes that zombies and humans both need forgiveness, but there are many who do not believe and do not seek forgiveness.
*Ilia hates the bountyhunter who seeks easy, small bounties. Bountyhunters ought to forgive minor crimes and seek those who are truly evil--those who are to be killed upon sight.
*Some say he wears the welding goggles for a make-shift flamethrower he carries with him.

Written by Dr. Martin Arrowsmith, a lab technician by trade, and his brother Benjamin (who has been missing since the Shamblin' Crooner's Concert at St. Barbara's of Feb. 2007), this biography is from a collection of papers and journals found inside a hidden office underneath St. Gall's Church. Further research was made and compiled through interviews and raiding Pennville's local records. Dr. Arrowsmith is currently a resident in Dulston and is a member of the Dulston Infection Treatment and Protection Squad. Although he and his brother have never met Ilia in person, they have had frequent radio and cellphone contact. Martin believes Ilia's story is one that needs to be told. Members of the DITPS field team have worked in past with Sparovich on one operation in the upper central portion of the city. The written work was published in the collection "Incredible Malton Stories 2" by Friends of the Featherstone Library Press-- Copyright 2006
A Pennville Legend: St. Gall's Church (Pennville)
----

<For copyright reasons, the full text is no longer available here.
Instead, a truncated version that outlines the original documents is available temporarily, courtesy of [[Friends of the Featherstone Library

The introduction to the text is as follows:
There are a few blood-stained sheets of paper, on which it looks like someone used an old typewriter to write. The "t" needs an adjustment. Later on, down the page, there is more written in barely readable handwriting. There are blood smudges on the page.

----

After Anton Steinbrecher died, the associate minister, John Spencer of St. Louis's Church, was appointed the new head minister of St. Gall's. His first duty was to preside over Steinbrecher's funeral.

During the service, the old head minister shocked the nearly 500+ gathering of congregants by reanimating mid-prayer and partially devouring Rev. Spencer's shoulder. Amid screams, panic, and blood, Vicar Ilia Sparovich shocked the crowd by beating and incapacitating the zombie Steinbrecher with a silver crucifix. Shortly thereafter, burying the head and torso in separate locations of the cemetery. Ever since law school, Ilia stayed well-informed of current events and the latest sci-fi/horror flick. Those who knew him closely were not surprised at Ilia's unpriestly, but ultimately valuable action. Many congregational members would never return to St. Gall's, despite being saved by him (for a time), because of the scrutiny over his quick response. The new head minister, Spencer, survived, but fell comatose and died the next afternoon. Both St. Louis's and St. Gall's had only two staff members left, and the city's peril only deepened. After hearing reports of massive outbreaks, Sparovich and St. Louis's only other minister did their best to create a safe-haven for the people of Malton, especially those on the way to Fort Perryn military base to the south.

Sparovich had grown weary of the blatent heresy and stubborn atheism that was growing in his church. Now St. Gall's only bleak hope was up to him. After setting up a clinic and opening up the old underground tunnels of the old Seminary, St. Louis's only remaining minister departed (in spiritual weakness) to find "safety" in a new religious cult at St. Luke's Cathedral. Sparovich was very furious, declining the offer to join him by throwing a potted plant at his head.

Ilia was certain Fort Perryn was overrun, but a large group against his pleas departed anyway. The remaining group needed supplies badly, but were too afraid and paranoid to go find some. Ilia decided to go himself, trusting that the people he left behind could handle themselves. While gone, the large group returned from Fort Perryn--panicked that it HAD been overrun. The crowd of zombies had followed, invading and destroyed most of the church--devouring or fatally wounding or infecting all the families and groups resting therein.

Returning to a church filled with blood and death, Sparovich's spirit was broken, and he felt the deep anguish of death once again. Feeling unable to protect those closest to him, even with the help of God, and no one to help at his longtime home and church, he left to wander Malton--swelling with inner turmoil and personal vendetta--searching for spiritual guidance and resolve to his harsh personal struggles. He never blamed God or himself for the tragedy, but sought strength and will to become great enough to shoulder the greater responsibilities and troubles of survivors everywhere. In his absence, the church had been repaired and cared for by other survivors of Malton, taking advantage of the cellphone tower. Sparovich has since been rumored to have returned to his church, and is watching over the people of Pennville again; however, some say he is a different man-- although very gentle and kind, he is now terribly paranoid, holds a deep and passionate grudge against the undead, and shows signs of delusion and hallucination. Even as a zombie, the deep connection of his emotional bonds keeps his brain lucid enough to control his blood-lust.

He shoulders a combat shotgun and carries emergency supplies with him everywhere--he claims to be prepared for anything. He has become an expert at creating and converting things to be of more use for the survivor, so wears a pair of welder's goggles most of the time, taking advantage of factories' and auto shops' scrap metal and welders whenever he can. Rumors say he carries a make-shift flamethrower that requires the goggles as eye protection. He has never claimed allegiance, but has served many groups throughout Malton who share the same convictions as he. Ilia, although not entirely stable, is a very powerful ally and loyal friend.

Sparohttps://wiki.urbandead.com/index.php?title=User:Sparo/navigation&diff=757467User:Sparo/navigation2007-07-30T19:08:56Z
Sparo:
