Book Odds
The purpose of this page is for players to report in-game book behaviour. From this we can calculate what the XP rate is for books, and determine how many uses a book typically lasts for. For this to be an unbiased sampling, if you commit to contributing information, you should record it and contribute it every time you read a book.
Current Estimation
It looks pretty clear from the data gathered so far that the XP-giving rate is 10%. It seems highly unlikely that a non-whole number percentage was chosen, 10 is reasonable and comparable to other such rates in the game, and the data gathered shows around 10.1% right now. More data makes this number more conclusive, but I think for all intents and purposes our mission is accomplished.
We do request, however, that people continue putting data on this page, as the question of the probability of a book finishing (and the average number of reads a player can expect from a book) are still unanswered.
There is no upper limit on the total amount of XP that can be gained from reading books.
According to the numbers submitted so far on average a book will last for 13.68 reads before it returns the completion message. When updating the numbers for average number of reads before completion, make sure not to include the book logs that show that the book is not complete yet.
Guidelines
- You should record a separate entry for every book. If you're only reading a book sporadically, update the entry each time you read the book, and once the book is finished, and you're starting on a new one, begin a new entry.
- Always use ~~~~ to sign your entries in the Sig field. Do not worry about dates being correct at present - since books may be being read across a long period, simply ensure that the Sig represents the latest update to the data.
- Always check your data to ensure that it is accurate before posting.
About Books
When a book in the inventory is clicked on, one of the following messages is generated:
- You study but learn nothing new.
- You study and gain experience.
Additionally, a further message is sometimes also appended, upon which the book disappears from the inventory:
- You have now finished this book.
