Following is a partial transcript of the contents of a digital voice recorder, retrieved from the Quarantine Zone by means classified. The Ministry has been able to confirm that the voice on the DVR is that of Dr. John Atticus, prior to the outbreak a second-year resident in emergency medicine at Maria General Hospital in the suburb of Havercroft.
The following entry is time-stamped 0705 GMT, October 8, 2005:
The patients keep coming. The guy running this hospital isn’t a doctor, he's a priest. Or he says he's a priest. Anyway, he's a pretty fair combat medic, but mostly what he seems to do is natter on to someone called Emily. Who doesn’t happen to be here. I don't care; I'm perfectly happy being just another resident again and letting someone else coordinate things. Stitch 'em and pitch 'em.
Several seconds of silence.
I’ve observed a marked increase in the speed with which some zeds regenerate after being . . . for lack of a better phrase, mortally wounded. To my knowledge, there is no way to kill these things permanently, but the critical damage thresholds I’ve calculated would put them down for several hours. That no longer appears to be true in every case. Over the past few days, I have observed several stand up again only minutes, or even seconds, after sustaining terminal damage. Others here have made similar observations.
For obvious reasons, detailed study of this phenomenon is impossible. We’ve all heard the rumors of a lab in Barrville or Ridley where they have zeds caged up for study like lab rats. My own observations are usually in the context of defending against a vicious break-in, so the empirical quality of my data is . . . less than ideal. Based on what I know of the zed phenotype, however, I would be confident in saying that the zeds who display this accelerated regenerative ability have been in a zombified state for some time. The newer zeds – and it’s easy to tell – newer zeds still appear to regenerate mortal damage at a much slower pace.
The obvious hypothesis is that over time, the zed physiology adapts to allow more efficient regeneration.
But none of us wants to be the first to say these creatures are evolving.
