I sit across the street, in the darkness, Axe rested on my knees.

I never wanted to come back to the fire department, to think about the class of ’77. I never wanted to return to this life.

The rain starts to fall. Big oily drops plaster what remains of my hair flat against my head, and I begin to shiver. Soon the snow will fall in Malton and the fight for survival will become even harder.

Wheeler Street Fire Department had been earmarked for closure long before I retired and stepping through the double doors it all floods back. I can taste the ash and smell the smoke, long since gone from my life.

A bloody smear leads me up the stairs. The Axe is ready. Every room I pass tells a story of survival. A fire hose dangles from a window, leading down to the roof of the library next door. Turning the final corner I see rotted limbs crushed under the Yagaton Cola machine. I’m almost there.

The door to my old office seems untouched, even the frosted glass remains intact. I know the brass plaque now holds a new name, but I don’t even pause to look as I grasp the handle.

As I open the door I know something is wrong. I don’t even need to look at the hunched figure. The Axe is already rising, falling.

The zombie is on the floor before I can think. As my heart rate returns to normal I look out the open window, trying to understand what the zombie was staring at. I see only darkness.

Darkness. That’s how it will all end in Malton. That’s why I’ve returned one final time. The Axe is the last piece of my life here. I place it, still bloodied, on the battered desk.

I don’t need it anymore.

Tonight I’m heading over the wall.
