Goals: The organization of the radio system to maximize benefit to non-metagaming survivors and provide relevant information to interested parties.
Recruitment Policy: Any interested non-PKer
Contact: Talk page (as yet)

The Malton Radio Defense Network is aimed at consolidating significant information in-game for consumption by all relevant parties. We plan to establish self-sufficient Satellite Broadcast Stations in every Mall and in any suburb that gains significance for one reason or another. We will be broadcasting.

Foundation

The Malton Radio Defense Network or MRDN was founded by the gaunt and bespectacled Dimmswick, an ex-military scout with a fondness for HAM radios. With the zombie infestation, the citizens of Malton banded together in mostly regional groups, often with little to no contact from one side of the city to the other. Unable to sell people on the idea of carrying a brace of radios on their person, he devised a compromise: he and his compatriots would monitor the airwaves, they would lug around heavy radio receivers and broadcast short, purposeful messages, if only people would listen.

Dimmswick has relocated to Downdney Mall following the Fall of Giddings. He is currently involved in recruitment and the establishment of the first MRDN satellite broadcast station.

December 11th

The iminent siege of Giddings Mall by Shacknews, reportedly their final attack before leaving Urban Dead, has led Dimmswick to commence the first official Malton Radio Defense Network operation. Daily bulletins/requests for aid have been broadcast to all malls with dedicated radio frequencies. MRDN Operation: Final Farewell will continue until the decisive end of the siege.

Goals and Purposes

Structural-Functional

The MRDN will develop an organized set of command channels and broadcast protocols to gather, consolidate, and rebroadcast significant information, including suburb/mall status, survivor warnings, important announcements, and so forth. This will be accomplished through the establishment of numerous Satellite Broadcast Stations and a few Broadcast Relay Stations positioned throughout Malton. Unit specifications will be discussed in a later section.

Social-Conflict

The MRDN will aid in the communication between survivor groups working to maintain the undead scourge. It's too tedious to slog through forum after wiki after forum (see metagaming) to get the neccesary information. The MRDN will provide envoys to various groups upon request. These individuals will be supported by the group which requests them and will handle all radio communication needs/wants of said group in-game.

The MRDN will also monitor the status of malls and forts in order that citizens in a safe place may know where the hotspots are and act accordingly. The MRDN believes that regionalism ensures that survivors rarely ever beat back large hordes, but rather die and wait for the undead to bore. Rapid, citywide response to crises can lead to the undead being regularly halted and routed.

Symbolic-Interaction

The MRDN will encourage roleplaying between survivors and survivor groups by communicating messages throughout the city upon in-game request. We believe that if an MFD Lieutenant in Grigg Heights wants to talk to a friend operating in Pitneybank, the least we could do is pass it up and down our channels for fun. We focus not only on game mechanics for gameplay fun, we also think that players being creative and inventing fun is an important aspect of life in Malton.

"Tune in, Turn on, Drop Zeds"

Each position in the MRDN has a specialized function. These determine behavior and deployment throughout the city, and can be graduated or changed per request and superior evaluation.

Positions in the MRDN

The following is a short list of positions in the MRDN. A more detailed discussion of these is available at the MRDN Positions page.

  • Information Technician

ITs are responsible for the collection and dissemination of information, as well as the upkeep of MRDN tags.

  • Supply Maintenance Officer

SMOs are responsible for maintaining backup supplies for the Broadcast Stations, as well as carrying first-aid kits and revivification syringes on hand to ensure the continued life of the Broadcast Operator.

  • Defense Maintenance Officer

DMOs are responsible for maintaining the zombie threat in and around MRDN safehouses and Broadcast Stations by distracting and hindering the undead through tactical misdirection and outright assault.

  • Satellite Broadcast Operator

SBOs lead Satellite Units. They gather/consolidate information and assign priority levels, then pass said info to their Relay Station. SBOs also command subordinates and are responsible for knowing all MRDN protocols, codes, and ciphers.

  • Relay Broadcast Operator

RBOs lead Relay Units. They monitor numerous MRDN channels and rebroadcast information from various Satellite Units according to protocols. RBOs also command subordinates and are responsible for knowing all MRDN protocols, codes, and ciphers.

MRDN Units

The following is a short description of units in the MRDN. A fuller discussion may be found at the MRDN Units page.

  • Satellite Unit

A Satellite Unit operates out of a defined area, and is responsible for intelligence from that area only. Satellite Units are headed by their Satellite Broadcast Operator, and consist of 1 SMO, 1 DMO, 1 SBO, and as many ITs as are assigned.

  • Relay Unit

A Relay Unit does not have a set operation zone, but will usually choose the safest possible location. Relay Units are headed by their Relay Broadcast Operator, and consist of 1 SMO, 2 DMOs, and 1 RBO. Relay Units are not assigned ITs.

  • Command Unit

The Command Unit is a meta-level unit that directs the placement of SUs and RUs, the assignment of ITs, development of new policies, protocols, ciphers, etc. The Command Unit is composed of 5 selected individuals of any rank.

  • Auxiliary Units

Auxiliary Units will be formed as events warrant and will have their unit specifications discussed upon creation.

Join the Malton Radio Defense Network

The MRDN is always looking for new members, seeing as a satellite unit in every district, every mall, with appropriate relay stations, plus sufficient ITs would require a membership of at least 150.

Requirements/Application

MRDN members must not be pkers. This will be checked off of the Department of Emergency Management's Rogues Gallery, and is a requirement for all MRDN applicants. Short of this, any able-bodied survivor is eligible for a place in Malton's first organized radio network.

MRDN-Supported Policies

DMOs are expected to follow (or establish) barricade plans when securing MRDN buildings.
