Basic Info:

  • Malls are an excellent place to find a wide range of items; the only major items that cannot be found here are fuel cans. As such, Malls are frequently used as safehouses and fortresses by survivors. Zombies often check inside (when they can get in), and organized zombie groups sometimes lay siege to them. They are listed as a Tactical Resource Point.

Miracle Mile Mall

Description

Taken directly from the Mall's own literature.

Miracle Mile Mall spans three blocks, and has recently received a small extension north of the eastern-most corner. The mall is remarkably high-tech, with computer monitors and information centres littering the walls. The mall has a very jovial air about it: light colours, friendly staff faces, and a comforting, amiable voice over the intercom all function to make everyone feel at home in Miracle Mile Mall.

History

Miracle Mile Mall was a leap forward for the city of Monroeville because, in addition to the normal stores, restaurants and facilities found in most malls, a prototype organizational robot was installed in the mall to perform security, maintenance and announcement duties. Though some purport that the program has attained self-awareness and has caused trouble for certain mall-goers, mall authorities have denied such claims as incredible. To this day, Aperture Science reports that no "harm" can be attributed to the computer system, and that Miracle Mile Mall is the paragon of shopping centers everywhere, using its modern technology to aid shoppers and businesses alike.

Barricade Policy

Though the computer systems claim that the re-animation of the dead is a fallacy created by attention-deprived teenagers, the human security officers of the mall ask anyone who wishes to defend it to make all entrances able to accommodate anyone who seeks entrance to the mall as refuge. (VSB)

However, the following statement from Mall staffer Rodrigo Vasquez on April 2008 contradicts this, and suggests a change in policy:

Each quadrant of the mall is to be kept at Extremely Heavily Barricaded at all times. NO EXCEPTIONS! I'm sorry, but survivors have had their chance to pick up free running. We're under threat of a siege now, and we can't afford to be keeping an entry point open. If you need to get in, try Perrin Avenue School or the Colliver Museum. No part of the mall is to be kept at VSB. NO PART.

Closest Resources

  • The warehouse to the South East is an important source of generators for the mall.
  • There are auto repair facilities for fuel at Sanderson Auto Repair (3N), Lownsdale Auto Repair (4S), and Welmann Auto Repair (5S).
  • The closest police station is Painter Road Police Dept (3S).
  • The closest fire station is Kyte Avenue Fire Station (2SW).

Outside of Urban Dead

There is an actual Miracle Mile shopping centre in Monroeville, Pennslyvania, as well as a Miracle Mile shopping district in Los Angeles, California.

Post-Outbreak History

After the zombie apocalypse, the Mall was successfully claimed by survivors and for four months from late February to late June 2008 suffered no real attention from zombies. Following the outbreak in February, the population of the mall rapidly increased. By early March, the entire mall was Very Strongly Barricaded and there were few zombies outside, making the mall one of the safest places in Monroeville. Its location in the most Northeastern suburb of Monroeville meant that it escaped Monroeville's Mini Mall Tour, with all the larger zombie tours focusing on West Monroeville.

The first successful break-in was a very minor one on March 4th. Another break-in occurred on March 19th, and reports of PKer activity in the Mall also increased. After the quarantine was imposed on March 28th, reports from the Mall stopped, although it was apparently still inhabited in late June. By June 28th, however, zombies had successfully breached the building and emptied it of survivors. The surrounding area was also rapidly depopulated, and due to a lack of reports since, it is thought to remain so to this day.

Reports

February 25th, 2008 The mall is currently holding about 40 people, all blocks considered. Zombie presence outside is low--there are about 5 zombies within the area directly adjacent to the mall. The mall is unlit; any generateors set up are still unfueled. No radio transmitters have been found or installed as of yet. Any survivors who wish to help the mall's inhabitants should consider learning Construction to protect the entrances. --Huge Success 20:37, 25 February 2008 (CST)

February 26th, 2008 About 60 people in the mall now, most in the far-western block and the north-eastern expansion. Generators are up in three out of the four blocks, but none have fuel. I'm 20 EXP away from, being able to barricade, and it seems other inhabitants are hoping to build formidable defenses quickly. One a walk around the perimeter, two zombies were present, but I took both out before I returned. --Huge Success 15:01, 26 February 2008 (CST)

February 27th, 2008 80+ in the mall at the moment. Zombie presence outside is growing: there is a group of about 6 zombies three blocks south at the police station. Fueled generators are up in all blocks, and radios are up in the two eastern-most blocks. Lets keep them at 28.01, seems to be the most popular station. I just got construction, and barricades are up to Light in all blocks, should be up to VSB by tomorrow. --Huge Success 11:27, 27 February 2008 (CST)

Easternmost two blocks are at VSB+2, western two blocks are at Light +1. I'll finish cading them tonight or in the morning. --Huge Success 20:05, 27 February 2008 (CST)

February 28th, 2008 Looking to be almost 100 refugees in the mall now. Almost no zeds: one has been spotted two blocks to the north, a few more south near the police station. All blocks of the mall are now lit, radio'ed, and barricaded up to VSB+2. --Huge Success 11:27, 28 February 2008 (CST)

February 29th, 2008 All blocks still VSB+2, all powered, all with operational radios at 28.01. Survivors are flocking in, as we are one of the only fortified malls in Monroeville so far. Zombies are scarce to the north, but at least ten can be found withing five blocks to the south. Closest group is at the carpark 2 blocks South and 1 block West from the SW corner of the mall. Refugees are asked to consider learning construction to help with mall protection, as well as diagnosis/shopping to help heal the wounded. --Huge Success 04:10, 29 February 2008 (CST)

March 3rd, 2008 More and more survivors, fewer and fewer zeds; Miracle Mile is a very safe place to be at the moment. A few people are complaining that we are not EHB, but those people are A) Scouts and B) not concerned with the well-being of others. The fact that almost no zeds wander outside means that VSB+2 is fine for now; survivors still have time to get the skills they need, including free running. --Huge Success 09:03, 3 March 2008 (CST)

March 4th, 2008 Today was our first documented case of a break-in. A couple new zombies broke down the central barricades, came in, and were promptly destroyed. All barricades are now back up to VSB+2. Remember--even if these zombies do break in, they have already used one level to buy Memories of Life, and thusly cannot do much harm in a short amount of time. Keep this in mind and leave barricades at VSB+2 for now, not EHB, until the situation warrants additional security. --Huge Success 01:59, 4 March 2008 (CST)

March 7th, 2008 Still very safe and ghoul-free, but some foolhardy survivors have overbarricaded parts of the mall to VHB. There is absolutely no reason to do so; the threat level outside is all but non-present, and not enough survivors have the skills necessary to enter. --Huge Success 02:06, 7 March 2008 (CST)

March 13, 2008 Things are still calm in the mall. An occasional zed has been spotted and promptly taken care of outside. Reports came in on yesterday's radio that there is a PKing group looking to attack the mall. Though some mall members have been hitting and healing one another for XP, there have been no reported PK attempts.

March 15th, 2008 The mall is getting a zombie or two every day in the vicinity, but none have breached the defenses. The PK warnings are false; many people are shooting/attacking and healing to gain EXP. The barricades are holding strong, survivors are safe, and each quadrant is powered and radio'ed. --Huge Success 14:32, 15 March 2008 (CST)

March 19th, 2008 The mall's western corner has been de-caded by a small horde of zeds. Anyone able to repair needs to do so immediately, seeing as we have 200+ survivors seeking shelter, and it is an easy entrance for zeds. --Ace Ciphrer Zer0 04:54, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

March 23st, 2008 The PK warnings are not false as my character has been killed by another survivor. --Gustav Z

June 25th, 2008 I stopped by Miracle Mile Mall for resupply today, and I was astonished to see the NorthWest end of the Mall currently under attack and being demolished by a small pack of 11 zombies. What are the people in the Mall doing?! I've sent Robert to assist, while I retreat to form a safehouse.--Gordon Skiles 17:49, 25th March 2008

June 28th, 2008 Miracle Mile Mall has officially fallen. There are zero survivors within the Mall, three sections have now been ruined. Human presence in the surrounding area is scarce as well. No lighted buildings for 13 blocks any direction.--Gordon Skiles 18:26, 28th March 2008
