Shilling Place

Description

Shilling Place is an unassuming laneway that offers a pedestrian walkway between Hogue Street, The Crang Hotel and Campbell Road. An industrial-sized door to the Ready Building has been boarded up in the later years and no longer functions.

History

Shilling Place is most known for being the hiding place of Ariana Fey during the last few days of the notorious 1983 Manhunt.

Wrongfully accused of murdering a stockbroker, Perren Hotel employee Fey was accused by then Chief of Police of being the suspect. A citywide manhunt occurred when Fey failed to turn herself in, and after a fortnight without leads, she was found hiding amongst dumpsters in Shilling Place.

In the struggle to arrest her, Fey suffered neck and shoulder injuries and permanently lost her ability to speak, and was later convicted of murder in a 1984 trial.

In the early 2000s, the Malton Innocence Project released an early form of podcast called "The Shilling", which chronicled Fey's story and created a groundswell of support for a re-evaluation of her incarceration and guilt. In 2005, after several hearings and inquests, Ariana Fey was released on June 2, 2005, one day before the outbreak.
