Although their doors can't be closed and secured, they can still be barricaded. Cathedrals are tall enough for survivors to commit suicide from. Cathedrals contain crucifixes, wine, and first aid kits, though Hospitals and Mall Drugstores are better for that last item. Cathedrals are large buildings, and are barricaded as such.

St. John's Cathedral

St. John's Cathedral is a four-block Christian cathedral in the suburb of Vinetown. As a 2x2 block building, it acts like a mall in the same way that once a survivor is inside he or she can move about freely without freerunning. However, this makes the building particularly difficult to defend. It should also be noted that St. John's resides in the same suburb as Mitchem Mall, and is very close to it.

History

Although it is commonly said that there are five cathedrals in Malton, this is something of an oversimplification. A cathedral is technically the seat of a bishop and as such there are only two true cathedrals in Malton: one of them, St. Matthew’s in Gibsonton, serves the Anglican communion while another serves the Catholic communion.

Just which location is the true seat of the bishop ordained by Rome is now a matter of some controversy. St. Mark’s of Spicer Hills served in this regard from the inception of the Diocese of Malton in 1896 (as part of the Province of Southwark) up until the outbreak in May, 2005. In the chaotic days following the quarantine, however, Bishop Lawrence Healy disappeared along with—for a time—any reliable mass schedule. Imposters arose from all corners. A man calling himself the “High Archon” and wearing a bishop’s miter has been known to frequent St. Jude’s, where it is said he celebrates mass daily. Another controversial figure, one “Archbishop Guido Sarducci,” set up shop in St. Mark’s. The blatant falsity of his claim combined with perverse rituals performed in “his” cathedral by the notorious Church of the Resurrection have significantly damaged the prestige of that formerly beautiful church.

The Church of St. John the Beloved across the city in Vinetown, however, has not yet been similarly desecrated although it is currently ransacked. As the only other large church in Malton with an unbroken Catholic tradition, St. John’s is a suitable choice for the bishop’s seat if he ever reemerges. The full name of St. John’s refers to the traditional belief that John the Apostle and John the Evangelist are the same person. St. John is considered to exercise patronage over authors, burns, poisoning, theologians, publishers, booksellers, editors, friendships, and painters. Iconography associated with St. John the Apostle includes the book, the cauldron, and the eagle.

Please distinguish between St. John’s in Malton and the cathedral of the nearby Diocese of Portsmouth, St. John the Evangelist, also part of the Province of Southwark. St John’s in Portsmouth is actually much older (built on land purchased from the government in 1871 and opened by 1882) while St. John’s in Malton was constructed as part of an urban renewal plan in the late 1980s. The city of Malton was increasingly wealthy in those days, turning away from heavy industry to a service economy. The municipal government and Malton’s wealthiest citizens worked to refine the city’s somewhat coarse atmosphere. In the public sector, the abundance of museums, monuments, and especially the zoo comprise the fruits of this labor. St. John’s may be considered the jewel of similar private endeavors, at least among Malton’s Catholic community.

St John’s in Malton was consciously modeled on the nineteenth-century French Gothic cathedral of Portsmouth (which has only exacerbated confusion along those lines) but incorporates a part of the original design, the tall spire of the southwest corner, that could not be completed at Portsmouth due to geological difficulties. Its stain glass was not complete at the time of the outbreak and further damage since has proven an unfortunate setback for the parish. Thankfully, its statuary has gone largely untouched with the exception of one to Our Lady of Sorrows. The face of this formerly gorgeous piece, its heart pierced with seven swords, was smashed by an unknown culprit some time ago.

Additional Information

St. John's is adjacent to two of Vinetown's four police stations and its only hospital. It is two blocks north of the Vinetown mobile phone mast.

The M.A.I.M. Society once claimed full control of St. John's Cathedral, but this group has now ended. The Cathedral is maintained and services are held (zombies permitting) by The Spanish Inquisition (TSI), and TSI FM broadcasts spiritual programmes on 26.34MHz. The first choir practice since the outbreak was held on April 1st, 2009.
