20070823 Psychic Repulsor Weapon

Suggestion type
Survivor Group-Activated Weapon with inventory and AP usage requirements

Suggestion scope
For groups of 25 or more survivors defending a single location under seige by a zombie horde

Suggestion description

Psychic Repulsor Weapon. A new weapon for survivors designed to repel large mobs of zombies from a single building square. An effective anti-siege weapon that complicates a hoard’s ability to stack on a singe spot and reduce barricades in short order.

Damage/Effect: The psychic repulsor weapon would have a 75% percent chance to scatter every zombie on the stack from 0-5 squares away, doing from zero to 20 damage to each zombie depending on how far they were scattered.
Use Requirement/Cost: The psychic repulsor weapon would require not less than 25 survivors to be present inside the building under attack by a horde, cost each survivor 10 AP, and perhaps require each person to have a specific apparatus searchable in NT buildings that takes up as much inventory room as a fuel can. Each survivor could only participate in creating the psychic repulsor wave once per day, due to the mental fatigue created by the process. The limit on use would be how many groups of fresh survivors could be assembled to protect a given location.

Conclusion: Honestly – any of the parameters could be adjusted in the above to make it fairer/ more effective in terms of game play – I’m not an expert in the balancing of skills. To me the beauty of this is that it’s complicated (but no where near impossible), requires a lot of survivor coordination (the best part of the game), and has the potential to stop a juggernaut zombie hoard in its tracks.

Keep Votes

  1. The Author votes YES! This would be the stuff of legend, and brings out the BEST in survivor coordination!--Squid Boy 20:12, 23 August 2007 (BST)
  2. Qualified Yes. This is overpowered, but that's a matter of tweaking. I like the concept that an organized survivor effort can counter an organized zed attack. The game currently allows movement of other peoples characters (dumping bodies outside of forts is the most obvious), so that's not an immediate kill vote anymore. In a game where undead eat the living and can be brought back to life, I'm not buying any more weak arguments against the supernatural either. I'd like something that is toned down a lot.
  3. Keep - Zombies are too overpowered. --Sonny Corleone RRF CoL DORIS CRF pr0n 07:17, 24 August 2007 (BST)

How about a weapon (Psychic Grenade) that must be built using a new skill (NT-R&D Lab, for level 10 or above) which is only capable of being fired in a psychic-sense by a group of 10 or more (must all possess the new skill?) The grenade can scatter anywhere up to ten zeds (random 0 to 10) and moves each of them 1 block in random directions. It also damages each scattered zed anywhere from 3 to 10 HP. Additionally only 2 or 3 NT Labs should have R&D departments where a R&D NT tech could find the components of a psychic grenade. Or something like that. (Edited to add: Oh and shame on you wiki users that have no more useful response than insults, sarcasm, and bile. That is not what this site is meant to be. Grow up people, this is supposed to be fun. Crapping on someone's fun is really against the game.) --8 Bucks 20:52, 23 August 2007 (BST)

I don't see any personal insults here. Sometimes it does happen - and that's out of line - but here the only thing being attacked is the suggestion. Whilst I'd never insult someone's person on this page, I do from time to time feel it necessary to state my mind bluntly on a particular idea.
Try looking through the Current Suggestions page, see the sort of stuff up for voting. A lot of it is depressingly ill-thought-out. People get tired of seeing bad idea after bad idea submitted for their consideration. This page is the best place to pitch an idea. 99% of the time it won't get mauled, even if it's as flawed as this one. -- Pavluk 21:13, 23 August 2007 (BST)
I disagree that a preponderance of something equals a justification for it. If that helps you get along, my best to you.--Squid Boy 21:35, 23 August 2007 (BST)

Kill Votes

  1. kill - This is the stupidist thing I have ever heard. =Doc Crook 03:30, 24 August 2007 (BST)
  2. Kill - Cute, but both unbalancing and hard to imagine within a zombie film. Electric fences? Sure. Psychic Repulsors? ... wrong genre. --Pgunn 06:04, 24 August 2007 (BST)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Spam Unfortunately, A psychic weopon rather goes againgst the spirit of UD. Try posting things on the discussion page to get some feedback.--Seventythree 20:12, 23 August 2007 (BST)
Could you explain what you mean? Call it whatever you want - a new NT innovation technology - please evaluate the ABILITY without bothering with my nomenclature. I definitely did not intend this to be 'spam' - I thought this out carefully, and would appreciate you doing the same. A 'no' would be better than calling it 'spam.'--Squid Boy 20:15, 23 August 2007 (BST)
    Very well.
    • The style of Urban dead is meant to be quite grainy and "realistic". Think George Romero's Night of the living dead So a psychic device just feels wrong.
    • The device is massively overpowered. It would give zombies no chance. Zombies on their own are weak. In hordes they can savage a suburb and have a chance of winning againgst entrenced survivors. This would disperse and kill them. This is deeply unfair and sabotages people who wish to play as zombies, and make the game boring for survivors.
    • Cost each Survivor 10 AP? So that's 25 survivors spending 10 AP each to scatter a whole hourde. Massively overpowered.
    • How do people pay for this? Do they click a button to contribute and then wait? What if no-one else joins in? Is there a timelimit for contributing?
    • If you are annoyed by my reasonable, thought out statement, I apologise for any offense. I merely suggested the first reason that came to my mind that this would fail, and suggestedyou took it to discussion, where we could elaborate on it.--Seventythree 20:26, 23 August 2007 (BST)
  2. Psychic Spam - Bringing an extremely powerfull stuff and trying to balance it by adding extreme limitations? just no --~~~~T''' 20:22, 23 August 2007 (BST)
  3. Spam - Ridiculous. Utterly out-of-genre. The ability cannot be seperated from the description in this case, how else could you explain 20 survivors suddenly scattering a zombie horde to the four winds? Mass flatulence? -- Pavluk 20:23, 23 August 2007 (BST)
  4. Spam No matter what you call it, it moves other player's characters (in this case a LOT of them) from one block to another. You'd have to have a DAMN good bit of flavor text to do that, as well as a strong game-play-based need for the effect. Both are sorely lacking here. 5. Holy hell, you were serious? I thought for sure this was a HUMOROUS suggestion. Nalikill 20:31, 23 August 2007 (BST)
OK, guys - make it harder, make it less powerful, require more suvivors to implement, don't call it psychic, whatever (As I clearly said in my conclusion?) Don't you think properly powered we need some way of repulsing mobs? Also, I'm rather shocked at the lack of civility above.
Sorry you're offended, but apart from anything else you've got to have a complete, full, suggestion before you put it up for voting. You can't Edit a suggestion after you've posted it.--Seventythree 20:36, 23 August 2007 (BST)
Nah, thanks for the thoughtful response seventy - though I'm not sure walking corpses and revivification syringes qualify as 'realistic' in my book any more than some device that could focus group energy. To each his own. Just a little surprised at the tenor of some responses - completely unnecessary. I will use the discussion forum next time for further vetting. My apologies for the attempt. --Squid Boy 20:40, 23 August 2007 (BST)
Since this seems a reply to ALL above comments, I think (?) its OK for me to respond. No, its not OK. Your suggestion was incomplete, certain parts barely follow formating guidelines, and in general it disregarded a huge bulk of advice given about what suggestions are commonly considered not even worth making- which explains a large part of the incivility, is why I mention it. As for 'repulsing" zombie mobs, barricades seem to work rather well when properly used by a co-ordianted survivor base. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 20:40, 23 August 2007 (BST)
  6. Spam- This is incredibly out of genre. Looks like a lot of hard work was put into it, I can respect that, but there is absolutely no way this would fit into the game.--Grigori 20:49, 23 August 2007 (BST)
  7. Spam - Why stop at Psychic Repulsors? We could have alien death rays, or Basilisk vision for zombies. How about, if 60% of the active survivors broadcast "I don't believe in zombies" on the same frequency at once, all the zombies would disappear? -- Bob Fortune 20:58, 23 August 2007 (BST)
  8. Humorous? - I pray to god that you aren't serious. --Thelightguy 21:27, 23 August 2007 (BST)
  9. Spam Out of genre much? I'm not playing Dark*Matter. How about you put this much time and effort into a suggestion that's in genre? --the one, the only, sushiknight (talk contribs HARD E.N.D.) 22:03, 23 August 2007 (BST)
