20071112 Newspaper re-vamp

SeventythreeTalk 23:10, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Suggestion type
Improvement to existing item. Suggestion scope
Survivors and anyone sick of newspapers. Suggestion description

This suggestion is a re-vamp to a near-useless item. Firstly, I realise that newspapers are a bit of an oddity. Like crucifixes and wire cutters. What I am suggesting at the moment is a change to the "flavour" of newspapers. This includes a (very low) chance to gain XP, just as a tiny incentive to read the new stuff. At the moment, Newspapers can be found in the following places (apparently).

Mall bookstores; NecroTech buildings; Hospitals; Pubs; Auto Repair Shops; Gatehouses.

I want to change Newspaper in some of these areas to a more flavoursome and realistic piece of reading material. In each of the following places, when a newspaper is found, there will be a 50% chance of finding the stated "different" reading matter. This new reading matter has a 10% chance of gifting the player with one XP. Unlike books, these are read once items. The learn something new text appears if the player successfully learns an XP from the text, added on to the normal text.

  • Mall Bookshops: New reading material - Comic book: You read the comic. It seems to be the story of a young centaur, abandoned by his heard and raised by a secret sect of Ninjas. You seem to be halfway through the series, as he is being equipped with cybernetic implants that allow him to fire lasers.
Learn something new - Though the philosophical musings of the central character are poorly tacked on, it does give you some insight into your current predicament
  • Necrotech Buildings: New reading material - Necrotech files: You skip through a report on the effects of a chemical referred to as Agent 454 in conjunction with necrotic flesh. Most of the report seems to be missing and incomplete, frustratingly it tells you nothing of any real relevance
Learn something new However you do learn a little about the effects of certain other chemicals on necrotic flesh
  • Hospitals: New reading material - Patient files: you uncover a series of files relating to a patient admitted with severely infected muscle tissue and gangrene. Apparently he had to be sedated heavily and restrained during observation. The file ends abruptly
Learn something new - The file mentions something about the deadening of the patient's responses to pain and other stimuli
  • Pubs: New reading material - Music Fanzine: This appears to be a cheaply made fanzine dedicated to a small musical genre known as the "Malton scene". You skim through it, reading an interview with a leading band
Learn something new - The interview mentions a lot of different areas of Malton that you are unfamiliar with, mostly pubs and clubs connected to the scene
  • Auto Repair shops: New reading material - Car manual This seems to be a manual on the repair and maintenance of a type of car you know little about.
Learn something new - It does, however contain a section on the correct maintenance of electronic components
  • Gatehouses: New reading material - Armoury Manifest: This is a comprehensive list of the weapons currently in storage at the fort. Most of them seem to be marked as "Not present - Maintenance required"
Learn something new - A tacked on page mentions the modifications made to the current stock of firearms

These new additions are mainly a way to re-vamp the existing newspapers and add a bit of realistic flavour to an existing item. I know people have suggested newspapers giving XP before, but I believe this suggestion is new and different enough to merit not being duped. Also. the suggestions for the flavour text would get boring after a while. I am perfectly aware that if this where implemented, many different flavour texts would also be added so to cut down on repetivity .

  7. Change/Keep- Newspapers should reflect current events, such as battles, fog, and holidays instead of Agent 454. Then I'll read newspapers like a maniac. The reclamation of Fort Perryn bit me on the ass today, so maybe with a change.--31337roxxor 01:16, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
  8. Keep- mmmmm... flavourrrrr.. --Darth LumisT! A! E! FU! U 01:40, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
  9. Weak Keep - It's not on the top ten list of Things That Need to Exist. It's just harmless flavor, though. Also, you might want to make that little clarification that you made for Karek more noticeable by including it in the body of the suggestion. --Steakfish 02:00, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
  10. You Find a Suggestion" The suggestion looks to be rather tasty. You decide to vote Keep. ~A`Blue`JellyTME*V*I*L*? 02:17, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
  11. Keep - It adds a very intresting part of the history and the game itself. It's situable for the newbies (adds a a more deep backstory) and for more experienced ones (I've always have fun looking for rare newspapers phrases).--ZombieJuice 03:21, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
  12. Keep - I love this, because it's possibly the only suggestion with laser ninja centaurs that will actually pass. --Funt Solo QT Scotland flag.JPG 09:01, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

  35. Keep - I might actually read them if they were amusing or interesting. Change appears to be 100% flavah! -- ZEDU medic T MEMS 06:09, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill Not worth the time to make something no one will ever use or care about. Omega 23:37, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
  2. Kill Personally find it too confusing with the variety, although if this were changed in some way, I would totally agree. Newspapers at the moment are totally useless. Despite entering this vote into 'kill', I LOVE the flavour text for the hospital and the pub papers. Perhaps consider that the flavour text depends on the location, and the item name would remain 'newspaper'. This may be what you said to Karek below, but I would just like to clarify my opinion. Boojamon 11.00, 17 November 2007 (GMT)
  3. Weak Kill - waste of time --~~~~ [talk] 10:50, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Spam - We don't need the new items, all this will do is create more toggle spam to do what we can already do without the spam.--Karekmaps?! 00:17, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
fair enougth that we don't need it, but remember this adds absolutely no toggle spam to the game that didn't already exist.--SeventythreeTalk 00:19, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
Sure it does, now I have to toggle off Comic books, Necrotech files, Patient files, Music Fanzines, Car manuals, Armoury Manifests, and newspapers because they are all uniquely different and contain uniquely different content. --Karekmaps?! 00:31, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
Hm. Sorry for not clarifying this Karek, but they do all count as newspapers, for the sake of searching.--SeventythreeTalk 00:32, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
That is a very important bit of information that should have been included in the suggestion somewhere.--Karekmaps?! 03:20, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
