20071112 Crossbows

LumiReaver 21:27, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Suggestion type
New Firearm, New Skills, New Ammo

Suggestion scope
Survivors, and those being shot at

Suggestion description
I was playing Resident Evil 4's Mercenaries, and I suddenly felt a rush of inspiration. (Really though, using Resident Evil 4 as inspiration for an Urban Dead suggestion is not advisable) Crossbows would be a firearm with two or more kinds of ammo. They'd be the kind of crossbows you'd find mounted on walls in the homes of hunting fanatics. They'd be somewhere between pistols and shotguns in regards to damage per AP, though they'd be found in separate locations so search rates for the other firearms wouldn't be affected adversely. A crossbow's bolts would have to be loaded individually, so it would essentially cost 2AP to fire one (one to load, one to fire), making it a bit different from the current weapons. Accuracy wouldn't be affected by Basic Firearms training, as it would be a primarily civilian-used weapon.

The Skills Crossbow skills would be civilian skills, mostly because if they were military, it would mean the military class would have to pay less for them, and they have enough of a boost with the other gun skills. The crossbow is supposed to be a hunter's crossbow, used for sport, anyway.

  • Crossbow Training - Player gets +25% to hit with all crossbow attacks.
    • Advanced Crossbow Training - An extra +30% to hit with a crossbow.
    • Crossbow Adept - Allows the use special crossbow bolts (More on those below)

Crossbow

Crossbows kick tons of ass, yes?

Damage Varies because of bolt options (Affected by flak jacket.)

Base accuracy 5%

Capacity One Crossbow Bolt

Locations Mansions (3%), Mall Sports Stores (1%), Junkyards (1%?)

Encumbrance 8%

Comments: I'm aiming for 4.5 damage per AP w/skills, and standard bolts, not counting finding ammo. That would place it between the pistol and the shotgun in terms of efficiency. Not too sure on search rates, but I think ammo should be a bit more common than just 7%. Because each shot takes two AP (one to load, one to fire), other methods of attack might be favorable for certain people.

Crossbow Bolt (Standard)''

Used by Crossbow

Contents 1 Bolt

Damage 7 Points (6 against a flak jacket.)

Locations Mansions (7%), Mall Sports Stores (1%/4%), Junkyards (1%?)

Encumbrance 1% / 0% when loaded

Description A basic crossbow bolt. It costs 1 AP to reload a single bolt (click the bolt to reload). Reloading will always fill empty crossbows. A crossbow can only hold 1 bolt, so reloading a loaded crossbow will waste already loaded bolts.

Crossbow Bolt (Armor Piercing)''

Used by Crossbow

Contents 1 Bolt

Damage 7 Points (7 against a flak jacket.)

Locations Mansions (2%), Junkyards (1%?)

Encumbrance 2% / 0% when loaded

Description Basically the same bolt, just made in such a way that it pierces armor, next to impossible to find, and balanced. Not too cheap, but a good, extra punch for the weapon.

There's some math here, you should check it out.

The old one had explosive bolts, which earned it too many kill votes for me to let it slide So I made a quick (though hopefully not sloppy) change.

Also the crossbow is now heavier.

Keep Votes

  1. ah, no explosive bolts is better --~~~~ [talk] 17:59, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
  2. Weak Keep - You know, I read this... and then re-read this. Then I went away from the compy for a few minutes, thought about it, and then came back and read it again. You know, if this were to be implemented, it would be interesting and would probably would be a niche weapon. As for the armor piercing bolts, Kevlar (the main type of vest used by Police Forces around the world) is not very good against edged weapons (like a knife) - because the velocity is slower, it is more likely to get through the Kevlar threads. I'm not going to argue it, or even get into semantics... but it is more plausible for an arrow to go through Kevlar than a bullet to my knowledge. I know you have put a lot of effort into this, and it does look good, so I say keep. --Ryiis 18:50, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
  3. Keep-You would kill enemies with anything that comes in your hands.--  Savant  Chit-Chat  18:52, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
  4. Weak Keep That's very good....but where would these bolts be? I could think of Museums, Mansions, and Arms having them, but.....eh...otherwise, it's nice.--KoronofHearts 01:01, 5 December 2007 (UTC)KoronofHearts
  5. Keep I have done some math in ma brain and this seems reasonable. I wouldnt use them that much, but i believe there would be a lot of people out there who would love to use these things for the cool factor. --People's Commissar Hagnat [cloned] [mod] 21:41, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
  6. Uber-Big Muscular 'Roidasaurus Keep On More 'Roids Armor piercing is better than bomb-o-bolts. Sensible RP explanation.--Shotstol 00:17, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  7. keep/Change - It's good, but why not just normal bolts?--Corndoghero 00:44, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  8. Keep- More weapons please! --Darth LumisT! A! E! SR 01:04, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  9. Keep. - WAAH BOO HOO ZOMBIES R NOT GUNNA STAND UP 2 IT!11one AND W3 DUNT NEED MOAR WEPS!11 Shut up. Anyway, fine. Yeah, normal bolts, since EX would unbalance the game. Glenstone 04:31, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  10. keep - the armour piercing should be the default and i like the idea of having these as a rare alternative to guns just in case Kevan ever decides to wind the game down or reduce the influx of ammo. After so long in isolation bullets should be scarce and these things are not that hard to make with the right tools!--Honestmistake 11:57, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  11. Keep I still think that EX bolts are good... maybe add one of those "Patriot Arrow"s that Robin Hood had... Or something with Thermite... That's what we need! Thermite! ~A`Blue`JellyTME*V*I*L*? 05:25, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill I think armor piercing bolts are a bit overcomplicated, and not really fair to zombies with flak jackets. Not sure how I like the flavor of a crossbow but I'd be more open to it without armor piercing bolts. Besides...who even makes armor piercing crossbow bolts? Are there factories out there just producing arrows meant to kill police officers? Seems pretty illegal and unlikely. --Jon Pyre 17:53, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
  2. Kill - Above and you didn't change the picture. :( --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 18:40, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
  3. Kill- The problem with this suggestion is it create be the first weapon in the game that can cause different damage based upon the ammo used. That being said, just because you make the armor piercing bolt rare, that does not justify its existence. Also, you shouldn't have implemented multiple things (three skills, a weapon, and two kinds of ammo) at once. It is hard enough getting even minor skill changes, this is too much and will never be voted in its current form. By the way any sharp crossbow bolt can kill an officer by striking him/her in the chest because their armor is designed to stop bullets that have a blunt head and have a single impact spike, it is not designed to stop sharp objects such as a bolt or knife that have up to two impact spikes. Plus, the armor in the game are flak jackets, typically not what an officer would wear. -- BKM 18:50, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
  4. Kill/Change Just have the one ammo type. Crossbows are a fairly beleivable weopon, and I have it on relitively good authority that people sell instructions on how to make them out of car parts on the internet. I'm just not happy with the "special" ammo. No other firearm has special ammo.--SeventythreeTalk 18:59, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
The special ammo is kind of the entire point. Being able to use different kind of bolts is supposed to be the crossbow's shtick, so to speak.
  5. Kill - Just one ammo type please. Or don't nerf flak jackets with the ones you do provide, if 2 types is the central idea. Because rarity =/= balance. --WanYao 20:42, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
  6. Kill - Theres no reason to add this. This seems to be suggesting that addition of a new weapon to the game simply for the sake of introducing a new weapon to the game, and a massively underpowered one at that. Its another weapon that no one would use, so whats the fucking point? Just drop it already mate. --The Grimch U! E! WAT! 22:16, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
  7. Kill - the skill tree you propose is flawed. "Crossbow Adept" would quickly become the most redundant and hated skill in the game. 100XP to use an ammo that's next to impossible to find and isn't even guarunteed to cause more damage? No thanks. --Pavluk A! E! 22:27, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
  8. Way over-complicated - I'd maybe vote keep if it wasn't so complicated, just make a suggestion adding a crossbow with a regular bolt and I bet you'd get more keeps, (but it would still probably get shot down...) --*--*--*--*/~WOOT~\ 00:05, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  9. Kill - Not needed, hardly wanted... however, if we were killing vampires... -- boxytalk • 01:09 27 November 2007 (BST)
  10. Kill - First of all, additional ranged weapons are pretty much unneeded. Second, ixnay on the armor piercing bolts. You might be able to get a few more keep votes if you eliminated them, but I'd still vote kill. --Steakfish 01:20, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  11. Kill - I don't like this. --Pdeq 02:48, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  12. Kill - It would change the game too much and crossbows are not exactly in genre. --Trunksoul 05:43, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  13. The multiple ammo types is what makes this unique. But the armor piercing sucks.--Pesatyel 05:45, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  14. Killl - Don't like Crossbow Adept. Also, the weapon seems a wee bit too accurate for my liking.--Cap'n Silly T/W/P/CAussieflag.JPG 06:01, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  15. We all know Resident Evil is a good game and all, but seriously, I don't like it when you make suggestions you got from other games. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 10:49, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  16. Kill - I'd rather rifles to this suggestion any day. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 11:34, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  17. Kill - Isn't that just like a survivor - bringing a crossbow to a gunfight!--Actingupagain 15:46, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  18. Kill - Make the load cost 4 AP, get rid of the armor peircing, and I'll vote yes. UCFSD 17:31, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  19. Kill - Seems out of genre, and silly. --Druuuuu 23:48, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  20. Kill - -- dǝǝɥs ɯɐds: sʎɐʍ1ɐ! 01:47, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
  21. Kill - Why not introduce recurve bows and compound bows first, while you're at it? Besides, there is no such thing as an armour-piercing bolt. The way all bolts and arrows are made today, they all provide optimal penetration against body armour. And I also feel it further decreases the usefulness of flak jacket-wearing zombies. Ariedartin 12:57, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
  22. Kill - Why not have exploding bolts? No exploding bolts, no vote from me. (sarcasm, people) -- Rutherford 15:56, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Spam - We don't need more ranged weapons. -- John RubinT! ZG FER 20:47, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
  2. Spam - No more guns.--Karekmaps?! 01:47, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  3. Spam/sorta-dupe -There isn't much difference between the old one and this. Still no. --AlexanderRM 22:39, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
  4. Spam - New, pointless yet cool weapons that'd get dropped by most of the survivors is the reason spam exists. --Karlsbad 20:09, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
