20080304 Change Transmitter to Transceiver

Kolechovski 17:24, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Suggestion type
I have no idea what to classify this as. Suggestion scope
Radio "transmitters". Suggestion description
Look at this, definition#2: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/transmitter Now look at this: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/transceiver Now we all, as experienced players know that the radio "transmitters" can also receive. It is quite common though for newbies not to know that their safehouse's radio transmitter can also receive. Even one such event can be found on the bug page, and that's just one of the ones that made it that far (hadn't been cleared up in-game). Since pointless confusion is caused by it being called a transmitter, and technically, it is a transceiver, why not just make it official?

Keep Votes

  1. Keep Ok, sure. --Jon Pyre 17:28, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
  2. Keep - Fine. if it's more accurate.--SeventythreeTalk 17:36, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
  3. Keep - Rakuen/WOOT, there's this thing called a dictionary, which might help you out. --Funt Solo QT Scotland flag.JPG 17:58, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
    I know, what I meant was that when I see transmitter in game I don't think "hey, that's not a transmitter! transmitters don't receive messages!" and so I think it is useless--/~Rakuen~\Talk Domo.gif I Still Love Grim 23:11, 4 March 2008 (UTC) Non author RE. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 00:06, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

  5. Keep Meh, but its a fair point. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 18:20, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
  6. Keep - A rare keep vote. Seems a fairly logical to have the item named its actual name. And Rauken, why not educate yourself instead of voting something down simply because you do not know what it is?  Billy Club Thorton  T!  RR  18:27, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
  7. Keep - I think I would actually prefer it sometimes if they couldn't receive, but since they can, it makes sense to call them by the correct name. - Headshot Hal 18:31, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
  8. Keep - As Hal. Specifically the headshot variety of Hal.--Studoku 19:16, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
  9. Keep - Sure, why not.--Jamie Cantwell3 20:49, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
  10. Keep - Bah. --Private Mark 20:54, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
  11. Keep - Good point. --Z. slay3rT 21:00, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
  12. Keep - Well clarified and makes sense to correct it. Even if people go on using the old term everybody will still know what they're on about. I approve. --Machinany gun 21:54, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
  13. Keep - Why not? As for kill voters learn you a book.--Carnexhat 21:58, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

  18. Keep - And the kill voters would do well to pick up a dictionary sometime. --Heretic144 00:26, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  19. Keep - because UDers are smart--CorndogheroT-S-Z 01:31, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  20. Keep/Change - If 'transceiver' is not in the common vocabulary, how about two-way radio? --Aeon17x 01:37, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  21. Keep I have worked in communications and he is correct. However, good luck finding a transmitter anywhere that is not accompanied by a receiver. These terms are generally used to describe 2 parts of a whole "radio" (EX: the transmitter is broken but it receives just fine)One of the only places you would find a stand alone transmitter would be in say an FM Radio Broadcast Station. So, way to nit pick! Victory to the technicalities!(Want to get really deep: If it is "full duplex" we have to receive on one freq and transmit on another freq. Wouldn't that be fun)--Airborne88T Zom MIS 01:54, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
Discussion moved to talk page, replies should be limited to one author RE and one voter RE. --Aeon17x 03:19, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  22. Author Keep - I almost forgot I get to vote as well. And yes, two-way radios could also be acceptable, Aeon17x.--Kolechovski 03:28, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  23. weak keep - i'm pretty sure there's a dupe, but still --~~~~ [talk] 08:05, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  24. weak keep - This seems somewhat pointless. I dont think anyone actually gets confused by this, but if the current definition is wrong then it might as well be fixed.--Dr Doom86 09:59, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  25. Hah! - I laugh at the kill voters. --Hhal 16:48, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  26. Keep - Accurate desciptions are better, people who know the diffrence don't get confused and people who don't will hopefully learn the diffrence. --Kamikazie-Bunny 17:40, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  27. Keep - Why not? Rick Best 18:26, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  28. Keep- Might as well make it right. -- BKM 03:34, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
  29. Keep- As a licensed Grammar Policeman, I fully support this endeavour of correct terminology. --Boris 15:13, 7 March 2008 (GMT)
  30. Keep - we should use correct terms of real life things in the game. "Zombification" or "NecroTech" etc do not really exist and is part of game imaginary, hence can be tolerated.--RayHanley 14:48, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
  31. Keep- Yay for accurate terminology --FrozenFlame 01:41, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
  32. Keep --LH779 08:45, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
  33. Keep – You are technically correct. The best kind of correct. ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾ 09:43, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill - when I see transmitter in game I don't think "hey, that's not a transmitter! transmitters don't receive messages!" and so I think this is useless---/~Rakuen~\Talk Domo.gif I Still Love Grim 17:55, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
Re: I've got to agree with the other keep voters, what they're saying to you. Of course, if you do not understand the difference, why not just not vote on whatever suggestions don't seem to matter? I prefer that if someone kills something, there's an actual good reason for it. Besides, I provided dictionary links! You can look those up right there!--Kolechovski 18:33, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
I am sorry, I worded my sentence badly, I edited it so it makes more sense...--/~Rakuen~\Talk Domo.gif I Still Love Grim 23:15, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
  2. kill - more realism is not always better. and as it is, the radio transitter's name identifies its special, unique function perfectly. i honestly think calling it a "transceiver" will lead to even more confusion, because obviously a lot of people won't exactly know what a transceiver is. and they're not gonna go looking itb up on m-w.com, either. just keep it all simple. for st00pid people like me. --WanYao 20:11, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
  3. Kill - I like the current phrasing better. --Pgunn 21:36, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
  4. Kill - Hey! Look! It's a 'Broadcast' box! Oh! And what's this? Retune transmitter?! Transmitter: Set used to broadcast radio or tv signals -WordWeb The average person knows what transmitter means, it's something used to transmit, or broadcast messages. We don't need to go all technical. --Themanwhocares4 00:48, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  5. Kill - By the way, personal attacks in a debate are considered to be poor taste. I'd rather keep my Radio Transmitter the same, because who really wants to waste time on this. And most people aren't going to look something up on M-W.com, I know I wouldn't. Padfu-Zomfu 17:50, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
RE: Personal attacks? I haven't made any personal attacks. I don't do those. Could you clarify the personal attack thingy? Thanks.--Kolechovski 17:53, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. ? - Who is this going to help? All the experienced players are going to be confused about whether this is a buff or nerf, and they would be so caught up in thought, that they'd all be murdered by people who don't know how to think. -doc crook 04:54, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  2. spam seriously? people who can figure this out on their own do not deserve to play this game --Scotw 23:10, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  3. Spam - Being a transmitter doesn't preclude it from also receiving signals, and transmitter is much more widely used than transceiver. This change helps no one but pedants -- boxy talki 10:37 6 March 2008 (BST)
