People with Mobile Phones Suggestion description
Mobile Phone-holders can be contacted by anyone… IF THEY CHOOSE

Under the current mechanic, in order for somebody to make a call, they have to have the intended recipient in their contacts list (which is easy to do anyhow), but the recipient must also have them in their contacts list. This cuts down on phone-spam, because griefers couldn’t create loads of level 1 zergs, spam somebody to death with crap. The problem is, it stops any legitimate people from calling someone, such as to warn of dangers coming, coordinate, or give scout reports. For example, every now and then, someone on the radio will give out his ID and asked to be contacted by anyone interested in whatever he said, unaware that he can’t be called, except by people already in his list. This forces metagaming. Sure, you can try to use the radio, but the radio isn’t private.

So the solution is simple. Make a toggleable option allowing each player to choose whether they can be contacted by phone by other contacts only, or by anyone. This will allow those that don’t mind being contacted by strangers to do so, and anyone who’s worried about (or is being spammed) can simply set to the restrictive option, blocking all phone spam. This will also take pressure off of metagaming and even allow different groups to meet/coordinate/form.

Keep Votes

  1. Keep - Sounds good. --PdeqTalk* 05:42, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  2. Keep/Change - Needs some way to block specific people you don't like. --Aeon17x 05:45, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
RE:I think you already can. When you add an annoying person to your contacts, choose the ignore contact option in the coloring scheme, and you automatically ignore them, so you can still keep it open to strangers while blocking known idiots.--Kolechovski 19:47, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
  3. Keep -Think it is an awesome idea!--Airborne88T Zom MIS 05:48, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  4. Keep - Very Cool, I like it!--Jamie Cantwell3 06:05, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  5. keep - I dont see why not. I am glad you included the option for people to select "no" if they dont want to be contacted.--Dr Doom86 09:46, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  6. Keep - And Aeon, there's the ignore button on the contacts list.--Studoku 09:57, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

  10. Keep - If it make life a little easier then why not?--Carnexhat 15:57, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  11. Keep - In real life, people would have a fit if mobile phones were as useless as they currently are in UD. --Hhal 16:52, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  12. Keep - Phones are quite useless as they are. Generally it's only groups that have members who are on each others contacts lists, so they may as well just contact any friends via their forums. With what you suggest, players can thank those who revive them etc... Rick Best 18:33, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  13. Keep Can you hear me now? Good. --Jon Pyre 18:38, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  14. keep - rather reasonable --~~~~ [talk] 19:10, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  15. Keep - As above --Alphonse Burr 19:32, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  16. Keep - Makes phones really useful, ok for me.--  20:42, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  17. Weak Keep - Hmm, maybe classes as toggle spam, but I could do with comtacting people like this sometimes, hence I vote keep. Acoustic Pie 21:53, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  18. Keep - simple and useful. keep. Logan227 23:50, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  19. Keep - Sure. --Heretic144 01:53, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
  20. Keep - ye this is a good idea phones have very little use in the game now but you could improve like zombies can hear the radio if they have one but with a phone a zombie shouldn't know how to work it --woofwoof1 21:20, 6 March 2008 (UTC
  21. Keep - Useful items please. --BoboTalkClown 21:24, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
  22. keep - I like this. I don't carry a mobile phone now, but I would if this was implemented!--KF 21:58, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
  23. author keep - I forgot I need to vote on this as well. I really think there should be a wiki policy where the author is an automatic keep voter, unless pulling the suggestion.--Kolechovski 20:05, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
  24. keep - i will never use a phone anyway --Scotw 17:10, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
  25. Keep - as long as it's toggle-able and you can still block people you don't want to hear then I'm all for it. --Rocky Road 17:12, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
  26. I seriously had no idea the person you're calling has to have you in your contacts. This is good. This is pretty good. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 22:56, 10 March 2008 (UTC)
  27. Keep - If you don't want spam, don't carry a phone. --FrozenFlame 01:38, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

  30. Keep --LH779 08:47, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
  31. Keep – A little bit arghmoreoptions, but I like it. Makes phones worth carrying – the only messages I ever got when I had a phone were mis-sent. ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾ 09:28, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
  32. Keep - I never understood why this wasn't the case anyway. You're sitting in a building surrounded by zombies and you're too worried about wasting your minutes for anyone who isn't on speed dial? --Vandurn 21:30, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
    Keep - Great idea Rohndogg1 03:05, 19 March 2008 (UTC) -- After Deadline. -- Cheese 19:17, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Kill Votes

  1. kill - phones are useful, but for specialised purposes. i.e., they offer private communication for for people already working together. for mass, public communications, use the radio. these two items IMNSHO are meant to serve different purposes, and their functions should not be merged in any way. the only change i'd like to see to cell phones is the ability to send text messages to multiple contacts. otherwise, leave it alone. --WanYao 11:41, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  2. Kill - The function is already served by radio. If you merge them too much then you remove some of the need for radios. --SeventythreeTalk 11:49, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  3. Kill - As WanYao, plus, I've never ever gotten phone spam.... EVAR!!!--/~Rakuen~\Talk Domo.gif I Still Love Grim 15:47, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
  4. Kill - I understand your reasoning, but to be frank, I've never had a problem with its current implemention. Also, I would find it odd that survivors who have seemingly never met (or, at least, didn't consider each other important enough to jot down information about each other) would know each other's phone numbers. We've all heard of people getting mysterious phone calls, but in an apocalypse such as this, I would think that such occurences would be rare and.... rare. Also, as with W00t, I've never gotten phone spam... ever. --Private Mark 02:51, 6 March 2008 (UTC)
RE: Well the thing is, most people who would be contacted by strangers give out their ID for the purpose of being contacted. That's just like giving out your phone number.--Kolechovski 20:18, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Spam - Toggleable screen spam. Isn't this the very first thing on the list of things not to suggest? - Headshot Hal 12:25, 5 March 2008 (UTC)
RE: It's not screen spam. You may never get contacted at all. Hell, radios can be considered screen spam for obvious reasons, yet those get used, and can be ignored. How is this different? It's nowhere near as spammable.--Kolechovski 20:18, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
re:re You said (and I quote): "...anyone who’s worried about (or is being spammed) can simply set to the restrictive option, blocking all phone spam". So, excuuuuuse me for simply agreeing with you that this creates spam that can be toggled. - Headshot Hal 20:58, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
  2. Spam - For your own good. I don't want to hear you whine when some griefer creates 4 alts to exclusively spam you personally. -- Iscariot 21:27, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
