Suggestion description
Relatively short suggestion - when your shotgun or pistol runs out of ammo, it shouldn't become useless.

The scenario - you're in a heavily barracaded building, all the resource areas around you are ruined, or maybe you're in a building and all the resource buildings are overcaded, and you run out of ammo! And gosh you don't have a melee weapon either! Whatever will you do against that zombie/trenchcoater who you've already started attacking/known PKer who's in the building with you somehow? You shot at him with all your ammo, and got them down to 4 health, dangit! You could punch him with your remaining 3 AP... but that just won't be enough, oh noes! Easy, desperate times - desperate answer. Swing the shotgun like a club or a metal pipe. WHAP WHAP WHAPPETY WHAP! TAKE THAT ZAMBAH/TRENCHCOATER/PKER!

Okay in plain english, what I'm suggesting is if you choose to attack someone with a shotgun, and you have no ammo in any of your shotguns, the game will let you use it like a metal pipe instead. There is, however, a 20% chance that using your shotgun in such an unorthodox way will result in breaking it, so that it can only be used as a metal pipe (ie, a 2 damage club and to loosely barracade if you don't have construction).

When you run out of ammo in the shotgun, if you click on attack with the shotgun again, the game would ask Are you sure you want to use the shotgun as a club? (to prevent finger slippage). If you click attack with the empty shotgun again, it swings it like a metal pipe (2 damage, 10% or 25% accuracy, depending on if you have Hand to Hand or not)

The pistol can also be used in a similar manner, but that would be mostly for flavor, as the damage that using a pistol could do would only be 1 damage at 10% or 25% accuracy (depending on if you have HtH or not) - no better than the aformentioned fist - as opposed to the shotgun club being 2 damage, though there's no chance of breaking a pistol by using it like that. They're sturdier cause they're smaller.

If anyone asks 'why not use a fireaxe?' the answer is this - Maybe because some people don't -have- a fireaxe, because they are lower level, and only carry firearms.

By the way, zombies can still swing a shotgun like a metal pipe.

Kill Votes

  1. 20% isn't high enough. I had suggest 35-40% in discussion. This is meant to be some kind of "last ditch" thing of flavor more than anything else. AFter all, why WOULDN'T you use a melee weapon? The hockey stick, for example, has the same hit chance and does MORE damage. In fact 80% of the melee weapons have the same hit chance for equivalent damage without the break worry(except the pool cue another "flavor" weapon). Also, I don't claim to know a lot about firearms, but I think a pistol would be more easily damaged with using it as a striking weapon because it is more compact and intricate then the butt of a shotgun. Inventory management is intricate game balance and the mechanics of UD are overly simplistic. If your character isn't going to carry a melee weapon as backup, then tough shit.     • Um.... the game HAS had an 'are you sure' box for years now. When you want to jump out of a window, it asks 'Are you sure'. When you click on Brain Rot as a purchase, it asks 'Are you sure'. Please know the history of the game before you say stuff like that?
