20080808 Dogtags (Again)

Jon Pyre 16:50, 8 August 2008 (BST)

Suggestion type
Item

Suggestion scope
Survivors

Suggestion description
This is not the first suggestion that proposes dog tags but I hope to avoid Dupe by having this item operate differently than described in the past.

I suggest allowing survivors to find dog tags in fort barracks and mall gun stores (they'd have it as a decorative necklace essentially). Finding dogtags would have a little bit of flavor text added to it:

"You search and find a set of dog tags. You can easily stamp your name on them with a nearby machine."

You never have to stamp your name, it's assumed that if the survivor doesn't discard the item that they did put their name on it.

Wearing dog tags does nothing while you're alive. However when you're a zombie it reveals your profile link to any survivors that kill you. Your killer would get this message:

You kill a zombie. Dogtags around their neck reveal them to be Guy Survivorman

That way if the zombie's profile is something like: "A sad lurching corpse wanders the city in search of a revive" their killer can add them to their contacts and then return later with a syringe.

This would allow survivors to get revived without necessarily having to go to a revive point. Their killer could then go back into a safehouse and say "Hey, just killed a zombie that's looking for a revive. Their body is 1w. Here's their profile link. See if they're standing up tomorrow."

Revive points would of course stay important, but this presents an alternative to being a mrh cow. What's not to like?

This also would allow zombies to display their witty and cleverly written profiles to survivor that kill them if they so choose. It wouldn't violate anyone's anonymity if they don't want it. Don't want your killer to see your profile? Just discard any dog tags in your inventory. Simple as that.

Keep Votes

  1. Keep A useful item that allows an alternative to standing at revive points. Also, I don't think any previous dog tag suggestions presents a profile link only when a survivor kills a zombie so it shouldn't be a dupe for that reason. --Jon Pyre 16:52, 8 August 2008 (BST)
Keep...wait - While overall it sounds all trenchie, its not a bad idea. Can be helpful if you die and you're operating outside of a group, and thus have no way to meta game a revive request quickly. I don't know that its necessary, but I have no problems with it. - tylerisfat 16:56, 8 August 2008 (BST)
I didn't even notice that it was only fort and gun store. I think I'm changing my mind. - tylerisfat 17:46, 8 August 2008 (BST)
  2. Change - This is the first time I've ever voted Keep on a suggestion as trenchy as Dogtags. It will probably also be the last. But, what can I say, it will help if you can't/don't/won't metagame. Once people level up, however, this will become useless as the DNA extractor performs the same function. --JAREDPlay the game 17:10, 8 August 2008 (BST)
WanYao brings up a good point in the Kill section... I changed my vote to Change. Make it available in hospitals (and since dogtags would be out of place in a hospital, make it the bracelet or something else that fits) and I'll change it back. --JAREDPlay the game 17:35, 8 August 2008 (BST)
  3. Keep/Change - I've seen trenchier things in my day, if there is such a thing. However, Wan has a point, what about Hospital Bandages? Also, shouldn't dogtags only reveal the person's name...? --Private Mark 20:32, 8 August 2008 (BST)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill - Annoyingly trenchy... Why not something like MedicAlert bracelets found in hospitals and drugstores, instead? That makes a lot more sense. I surprisingly don't hate this idea... in theory. But in game-play terms, it's overpowered: you get very powerful intel for doing nothing and that's never a good thing. And it totally encourages people to kill zombies in the street, also not a good thing. If you want to know the same information, use your effen DNA Extractor! --WanYao 16:57, 8 August 2008 (BST)
In response to Jared's vote, above. This, sadly, doesn't help 90% of newbies -- exactly because of its trenchcoatishness. It's only found in Forts and inside EBH malls. Meh... That's why I suggested, if you're going to do this at all, making it a medical bracelet or something -- and thus newbies would have access to them all over the city in one of the many VSB Hospitals -- where they should be anyway, if they want to level up efficiently. As it stands, its trenchiness is both annoying in and of itself, but it's also not useful to most newbies.--WanYao 00:55, 9 August 2008 (BST)
  2. Grumble...Edit conflicted by Wan...And I had about the same reason... --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 17:00, 8 August 2008 (BST)
  3. Kill - I'm changing my mind, as this is just trenchie pure trenchie. I don't see it being useful if its only those locations, and I'm not even sure it will matter if you put it in more locations. It's accomplishing what doesn't need accomplishing. - tylerisfat 17:48, 8 August 2008 (BST)
  4. Kill You're diluting guns and ammo search rates in forts, so its not that trenchy, but I still feel Wans solution is better. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 17:53, 8 August 2008 (BST)
  5. Kill - I don't see this being useful, fixing anything, or helping anyone except people who go out and waste ap by killing zombies in the street.--Janine 18:29, 8 August 2008 (BST)
  6. Kill - Out of theme. I have no sympathy for zombie anonymity, but the time for manufacturing these things is over.. and besides, who would take the time? "Bob, could you stop messing with the machine? We're trying to defend this building" --Pgunn 18:52, 8 August 2008 (BST)
  7. Kill - Leave zombie anonymity alone. It's not hard to understand is it?--drawde DORIS Red Rum Defend Ridleybonk! I know Nothing! Clicky 19:17, 8 August 2008 (BST) (sig breaks page- SIM Core Map.png Swiers 19:27, 8 August 2008 (BST))Fixed--Karekmaps?! 20:12, 8 August 2008 (BST)
  8. Kill - Ever heard of DNA Extractors? --Midianian|T|T:S|C:RCS| 20:27, 8 August 2008 (BST)
  9. Kill - It appeases trenchies and hurts zombie anonymity, and I am personally against both of those. Get a DNA extractor.--William Told 21:36, 8 August 2008 (BST)
  10. Kill - good god almighty, use a DNA extractor already! Revives are already ridiculously easy to organise -- boxy talki 06:16 9 August 2008 (BST)
  11. Wait, don't you already get a link the zombie's profile when you kill them? Or am I mistaken? And to the "change" votes above, "change" is NOT valid vote. If your voting keep, you are voting on the suggestion AS IS. If not, vote kill (and, of course, explain why).--Pesatyel 08:00, 9 August 2008 (BST)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. KillSpam(Overpowered) - Leave Zombie Anonymity alone. I'm sure it sounds like a great idea to allow people to pass profiles without direct interaction with a player when you don't actually try thinking about how this would effect the game, I can't do that. DNA Extractors already exist for a reason and they are already way too informative, there's no practical reason to allow that information to be traded without AP expenditure on the reviver's part.--Karekmaps?! 17:41, 8 August 2008 (BST)
  2. Spam Useless and unrealistic. If the zombie hunter cared enough about revives to be adding profiles as contacts and sharing those profiles with others, they would use a DNA extractor, rather than killing the zombie. And really, how does just reading a dogtag on a corpse make a zombie more recognizable? Either you can ID them by appearance, or you can't. Game mechanics say you can't, which is why this is a spam vote.SIM Core Map.png Swiers 19:25, 8 August 2008 (BST)
  3. Spam - I don't like the role-play aspect, and fail to see what fun or necessary game-play this might provide, beyond what already exists. --Funt Solo QT Scotland flag.JPG 23:47, 8 August 2008 (BST)
  4. Spam - Overpowered. Revives are easy enough. --Papa Moloch 07:34, 9 August 2008 (BST)
