Suggestion description
Allows survivors to use the bells in churches and cathedrals as flares.

The bell doesn't require any additional skills to use. However, you do need to repair the belltower seperately from the church, should it be ruined. The bell tower will always need 5 AP (10 AP for a cathedral) to repair, regardless of how long the church has been ruined. You cannot repair the bell tower/bellfry until the church/cathedral is repaired first.

Ringing the bell takes 5 AP.

Ringing the bell has the same effect as a flare, though the distance it can be heard from is shorter, with the area of effect being only 5 blocks in radius.

Flavour text is:

  • You ring the church bell
  • You climb the bellfry and ring the cathedral bells
  • The bell tower is ruined, you cannot ring the bell until the tower is repaired
  • The bellfry is ruined, you cannot ring the bells until the building is repaired
  • You hear a church bell rining [Number] blocks [Direction] and [Number] blocks [Direction]
  • You hear cathedral bells ringing [Number] blocks [Direction] and [Number] blocks [Direction]

  1. Keep - The fact that I wrote this is reason enough. --Blake Firedancer T E RNL? P.I.S.I.T. 08:04, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
  2. Keep/Change - I don't see the harm; it's expensive enough that it is unlikely to be abused by spammers. However, I did have a question that I don't remember being answered from the discussion: when a cathedral bell is functioning (as opposed to a church), does it ring from all 4 squares of the cathedral, and therefore is actually heard in a 6x6 area? If not, why is a cathedral bell more expensive to repair? ~ extropymine Talk | NW | 4Corners 08:17, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
Because cathedrals tend to have more than one bell. Oh, and for clarification in larger buildings when you ring the bell, the area is calculated from the square you are standing in. Any square can be used to ring the bells from. --Blake Firedancer T E RNL? P.I.S.I.T. 22:18, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
Aha, okay. So fixing the bells in one square of a cathedral fixes them in all four squares, but when someone uses Ring the Bell inside a cathedral, its point of origin is that single square. ~ extropymine Talk | NW | 4Corners 00:33, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
  3. Keep- It would realy help if you dont have a flare and alot of AP--Dudeperson13 16:04, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
  4. Keep Yes, but multiple rings from one location should be condensed like so "A church bell was rung nine times..." to eliminate spam. --A Big F'ing Dog 18:32, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
How about messages for 'once', 'twice', 'three times' and 'several times'? --Blake Firedancer T E RNL? P.I.S.I.T. 00:09, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
    Why wouldn't the "...and again" mechanic work? ~ extropymine Talk | NW | 4Corners 06:02, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
    Too many messages. --Blake Firedancer T E RNL? P.I.S.I.T. 08:39, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
Anything would work, as long as it condenses the efforts of one person who rings it multiple times. --A Big F'ing Dog 18:31, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
  5. Keep - As everyone above, especially Big F'ing Dog. --Private Mark 19:17, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
  6. Change - See HM and Maverick below. Linkthewindow  Talk  20:51, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
  7. Keep - Good as is, but I'd also like it if the bell rang/clanged when it gets ruined. --Kamikazie-Bunny 14:29, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
I agree with the several people who have mentioned this. Something like you hear a tremendous, discordant crash X blocks to the Y and Z blocks to the A as church bells fall from their belltower or something. ~ extropymine Talk | NW | 4Corners 18:57, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
  8. Keep - I agree with Extropymine about the AP on the repairs, but other than that I like it. --Rohndogg1 20:24, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
  9. Keep - Adds to the value of Churches and Cathedrals, and would work wonderfully from a roleplaying standpoint. ChainReaction01 03:41, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
  10. Keep - Sounds good to me. Nemesis645 12:32, 19 February 2009 (UTC)
  11. Keep - As long as I wouldn't end up with a thousand messages every time someone decided to blow a full AP cycle on bell ringing, I'm all for this. Mmm, flavoursome --Sage|Carr Cobra 00:02, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
  12. keep--Sgt Gonnella 02:24, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

  14. keep It seems like a good and intresting idea. --Michalesonbadge.pngTCAPD(╯°□°)╯ ┻━┻ 16:36, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
  15. keep Sounds good. --D.E.ATalk 16:38, 24 February 2009 (UTC)
  16. keep It makes sense, realistic too. --User:KingsBlendRizla 02:54, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
  17. keep Another way to signal survivors, and makes Churches and Cathedrals more useful. Same thing as above. --reverselift 06:06, 26 February 2009 (UTC)
  18. Keep - It would give a point to churchs and cathedrals. It would be cool on Christmas to hear the bells ring out lol. --Alex1guy 17:04, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
  19. Keep - Flavor for churches. --Bob Boberton TF / DW 04:48, 1 March 2009 (UTC)
  20. Keep - 'Tis good. I like it. --MrKiwi 02:42, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
  21. Keep - 5AP why not 3?--Athur birling 17:03, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
Keep - Agree with Athur birling - but that's just a detail. CaptainVideo 00:49, 3 March 2009 (UTC) Vote was cast after deadline --Explodey 17:04, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

  1. Change - I like the concept, but I think the actual mechanics need some revision. Specifically, the AP to repair a belltower. Why would this be constant? If a church has been out of comission for a long enough time that the building requires 45 AP to repair, why would the bell tower be a mere 5 AP? --Maverick Talk - OBR Praise Knowledge! 404 15:29, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
I suppose that could work. But, there definately should be a cap on how much AP it takes to repair the tower, say around the 20 - 25 AP mark for churches, and 40 - 50 AP for cathedrals? --Blake Firedancer T E RNL? P.I.S.I.T. 11:18, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
  2. Change - I still like this but would want zombies to be able to get some glory for the ruining of bell towers. Basically a single AP should ruin the tower and should ring the bell with the zombie in question geting a triuphant roar in (and displaying his/her profile tag) This would actually make it a potentially useful update for zeds rather than more survivor biased fluff! --Honestmistake 20:44, 16 February 2009 (UTC)
A zombie ruined the belltower/bellfry good enough for you? It would be displayed to all people in the church/cathedral, as well as the message You see [church name]'s belltower/bellfry collapse to those in neighbouring blocks/outside. --Blake Firedancer T E RNL? P.I.S.I.T. 11:18, 25 February 2009 (UTC)
I would prefer if everyone in the church block got a more flavoursome message "A zombie bellows its victory from the highest tower and with a terrible clanging the bell is thrown down!" everone in normal range should hear the destruction as a different sort of ringing too. --Honestmistake 15:04, 2 March 2009 (UTC)
  3. Changes - You make the changes Maverick and Honest suggest and you've got my vote. -- Cheese 20:26, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
  4. Kill - I concur that the tower's repair should be dependent on the time the church/cathedral has been ruined. --ZsL 02:27, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
I don't agree; I don't think a stationary, reduced-range flare deserves making a building a potential AP sink of that magnitude. Plus, what happens if someone repairs the church but *doesn't* repair the belltower? Does it continue to "degrade?" I'd rather just add +5AP to the repair cost and call it done. ~ extropymine Talk | NW | 4Corners 18:51, 18 February 2009 (UTC) Non-author reply struck. --Midianian¦T¦DS¦SP¦ 23:06, 18 February 2009 (UTC)
