How about this? Instead of hearing the precise location, each hour the number of shots in a 9X9 grid raidus are totaled up each hour. If there is more than 5 shotgun shots from any one location, you get a message You hear the muffled boom of shotgun fire from the (north) If there is more than 10 pistol shots from any direction you get the message You hear the repeated sharp crack of pistol fire from the (south) YOu could, of course choose to ignore these.--Seventythree 11:18, 27 June 2007 (BST)

First, I say sound should only carry 3 blocks. Second, when the sound goes through a wall it's range should be diminshed by one block. So if the sound originated inside a building, it only carries two blocks outside. If you are currently inside, you can only hear gunshots from two blocks away. And if you're inside and the shooter is inside, you can only hear it from the neighbor blocks. --Midianian 15:40, 28 June 2007 (BST)
