Tactical Body Armor

Timestamp: 01:22, 25 June 2006 (BST)
Type: Item
Scope: Survivors
Description: [Bulletproof vests] may be augmented with metal (steel or titanium), ceramic or polyethylene plates that provide extra protection to vital areas. These hardarmor plates have proven effective against all handgun bullets and against specific rifles using specific ammunition. Normally referred to as tactical body armour, these types of vests have become standard in military use, as soft body armour only vests are ineffective against most military rifle rounds. - from Wikipedia

The flak jacket is currently the survivor's only defense against hostile fire. I'd like to see it boosted, but not in such a way that makes it harder for survivors to kill zombies. I'd just like it to be a little harder for humans to kill each other.

Tactical body armor would be an "upgraded" flak jacket found in police stations at half the odds of the flak jacket currently. Powered searches seem to come up with a flak about 3% of the time; tactical body armor would thus have a 1.5% find rate. There are three main things to note about tactical body armor:

  • It offers more protection from ballistics only. Whereas flaks reduce firearm damage by 20%, armor would reduce it by 40%. Pistols would do 3 damage against armor; shotguns 6 damage, and flare guns 9.
  • It's heavier than the flak. Tactical body armor would take up two inventory spaces instead of one.
  • It is always "damaged" upon death. This is to prevent the armor from carrying over to zombies and making survivors' lives really miserable. When a character wearing armor dies, any and all tactical body armor items in their possession are converted to ordinary flak jackets (reduce damage by 20%, take up one space each). Think of it as the ceramic plates getting busted, if you like; the point is just that the higher level of protection does not carry over into death.

What this last point means is that, if you live in a dangerous area, you may have to scrounge up this item more than once. But those who need the protection will spend the AP to get it, and probably be able to go longer without dying (and thus, without losing their armor) once they do have it. So I think it's a good balance.

I expect that the votes on this are going to be highly polarized, with folks falling on one side of the PK divide or the other. So let me say this: I've PKed. A lot. And I find it's too easy. Survivors can barricade against zombies but they have next to no defense against hostile humans. I don't think PKing was intended to be as much a part of the game as it's become, and I think this suggestion would provide a bit more protection against it while carrying with it some drawbacks to balance the advantages.

Votes

  1. Keep - Let's get Urban Dead back to the main conflict. I don't mind PKing happening here and there, but if we want factional, human-on-human warfare we can play Nexus War. --Ember MBR 01:22, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  2. Spam - don't nerf PKing. It is one of the simple joys of this game--GageRRF 01:31, 25 June 2006 (BST)
    • Re - Note that because the item can be degraded, not everyone is going to have full armor all the time. If you target people at random, you may find a lot of your targets are as soft as before (and if you encounter the armor, you can target someone else); but if you start targeting the same person over and over, they might start repeatedly picking this item up in order to frustrate you. I'd say that's reasonably fair to both the PKer and the PKee. --Ember MBR 01:59, 25 June 2006 (BST)
      • Re - I don't find that fair at all. Nobody will PK you unless you provoke them. Most PKers targegt certain people, they don't just choose some random person to grief over and over again. --GageASS 02:52, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  3. Spam - No. Sonny Corleone WTF 01:33, 25 June 2006 (BST)
    • Keep - I'm only placing a vote so I can make a prediction: every single PKer/death cultist will vote against this, and since they are extremely overrepresented on the suggestion page, this will go down in flames. --Rheingold 01:38, 25 June 2006 (BST). Wow, before I could even submit, some of you guys beat me to it. Thanks Sonny. --Rheingold 01:39, 25 June 2006 (BST).
      • Vote struck. "Votes that do not have reasoning behind them are invalid. You MUST justify your vote." –Bob Hammero TW!P! 02:03, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  4. Spam - Like it or not, PKing is a valid form of play. PKers are already nerfed by having 1/2 the experience gain. This takes things too far. –Bob Hammero TW!P! 02:01, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  5. Spam - WTFCENTAURS--LCpl Mendoza 02:02, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  6. SpamKeep - PKers are people too! Ok, so Grim quit UD, the RRF just lost it's leader, and even with the syringe nerf survivors are still winning in the numbers war, which shouldn't happen, this is a Zombie Apocolypse game not a Survivor Apocolypse game, Caiger would have fell if the game was true to the Zombie Theme, not because of Barhah. Unless some serious changes are made, it is irrelevent what happens to the game, even if it is bad for UD's rapidly depleting health. 343 U! 02:49, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  7. Kill - It's a poor suggestion, but not so stupid as to be spammed. If PKing was such a big deal and not supposed to be part of the game, Kevan would remove it. It's not like death is that big of a penalty, regardless of the cause. And this wouldn't be a huge deterrent, seeing as it only makes you shoot a guy a couple more times, and you can't choose a less-armoured fellow as a target before shooting them. – Nubis 03:11, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  8. Kill - Works for Nexus, but a bit too complex for UD. --Mookiemookie 04:49, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  9. Spam - Why must my people be persecuted so? Also, 343: Grim wasn't and isn't the leader of the RRF. Petro was and is. Over and above which, voting to break the game more because you believe it's already broken represents logic so deeply flawed as to not deserve the label at all. --Jimbo Bob ASSU! 06:23, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  10. Spam - Jimbo Bob speaks the truth. Take heed of his words. –Xoid 07:13, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  11. Kill - PKing is fine. Of course people don't like being PK'd, but hey, that's that. Plus, why would (in a roleplaying situation) humans get vests that protect only against bullets, when they are trying to survive against the zombies? Qhiiyr 07:27, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  12. Kill - 1. Unfair to zombies. 2. Unfair to PKers. 3. Game doesn't need stronger armour. --Otware 10:59, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  13. Kill - Survivors should have something to discourage and prevent PKing but this is too much. What happens if a PKer wears Tactical Body Armor and Goes on a PKing Spree Huh? Then it would be harder for honest Survivors. --J Z D 13:22, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  14. Kill only the version above deff not the concept - I had been toying with armour ideas - perhaps one where it is more effective but costs more AP to move about - like Zombies at the beginning. I think people would get any kind of armour they can and I would prefer that it did carry over making newer Zombies even slower to move (or advenced ones as slow as survivors in them) but getting added protection. For interest I also play a feral Z with no flak vest. Lastly it could also represent suits of armour found in mansions/ Museums? KyleTravis 13:42, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  15. Spam - Xoid speaks the truth. Heed him. David Malfisto 14:44, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  16. Spam - Pkers are people too! Oh, and Jimbo Bob, Both Petrosjko and myself have gone, and that was what he was saying. I was/am one of those loudmouth long time PKer rights activists. And just so you know, i was Petro's right hand zombie, and if i hadnt left first, i would be running the show (Much to my horror), fortunately i bugged out before it got there. --Grim s-Mod U! 16:56, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  17. Spam - The truth David Malfisto speaks. Heed him you must. --Niilomaan 17:30, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  18. Kill Not spam by a long shot, but I don't think having an item specifically to discourage PKing is the answer. I'd rather the counter be some sort of skill that makes it possible to track PKers. --Jon Pyre 17:39, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  19. Spam - Nerfs PKers, death cultists and bounty hunters for no good reason. Flack is fine as is --TeksuraTalk 22:36, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  20. Spam - Don't hurt PK'ers for no reason. --Karlsbad 23:16, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  21. Spam-Why can't Zombies have this powerful Jacket? And besides, PKers are people too!--ShadowScope 23:31, 25 June 2006 (BST)
    • Re - PKers exploit a flaw in the game design. I PK and I know it; I don't think any honest PKer could deny it. The game was built on the assumpetion of survivors defending themselves against zombies, not against each other. If we're going to allow human-on-human violence, we need to build in some sort of counters to balance it. The Spam votes on this suggestion are unconscionable; there's nothing here that's not already in the game to some degree. People are using Spam as a strong Kill and putting their cool PK characters before balance. And yes, that means you, Grim. --Ember MBR 02:09, 26 June 2006 (BST)
      • Re - It is not a flaw in the game design. If it were a flaw, kevan would have just reduced accuracy against humans to 0%, or made it so they dont appear in your attack drop down. Both are variation of things he has already coded into the game. Human VS Human is a staple in Zombie Apocalypse settings. What you want to do is make it much harder for Pkers, who already have about 90% of the population of the game as enemies. Honestly, Pkers are the most difficult kind of pleyer to play, and you want to make it more so. Dont break an aspect of the game because you dont like it. --Grim s-Mod U! 08:31, 26 June 2006 (BST)
    • Re-PKing is a part of the game. Some may call it greifing, but people do it anyway. Why? The game is boring, and to them, they have to do SOMETHING. Not every Suriviors want to go out and shoot Zombies. Many of them realize that Suriviors are much more powerful than Zombies, and hence there is no point to fight against the Zombies. At least Suriviors are a harder and funner prey. And if you nerf PKing, well, you nerf the only real threat to Suriviors. You'll make a lot of people upset. What I would prefer is that huge body armor be transferred to Zombies. It would make an excellent Zombie Buff? Want to re-orient the game towards HvZ rather than HvH? Then make the Zeds more powerful.--ShadowScope 02:18, 26 June 2006 (BST)
  22. Keep - great idea.. - Nicks 03:11, 26 June 2006 (BST)

Radio Destroy Static

Timestamp: 06:53, 25 June 2006 (BST)
Type: notification improvement
Scope: Radios
Description: This would be a simple but handy improvement to radios. The case: a zombie (or human, for that matter) destroys a radio on x frequency. The reaction: all radios on x frequency would hear a crackling sound when the radio is destroyed. Something similar to "A loud crackling sound erupts from the radio over x MHz and the line silences." would suit well.

This adds to roleplaying, as well as what's going on where, a good amount. Imagine a safehouse is being raided by zombies. The survivors are calling for help over the radio, and they're screaming for help and of pain, then all of a sudden, there's an electric crackle and the line goes dead.

  1. Keep - My one vote that I am allowed. Qhiiyr 06:53, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  2. Kill - Do you have any idea how many radios are out there? Those things produce enough spam already. --Jimbo Bob ASSU! 06:54, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  3. Kill - I like the idea, I really do, but there is enough radio spam out there already --GageASS 07:34, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  4. Kill - Surely you must mean when radio transmitters are destroyed all the radios on x frequency pick up a craking sound? --Otware 10:54, 25 June 2006 (BST)
Keep - Ahh go on then. Nice flavour. It's actually quite obvious that you do mean a transmitter. --Otware 12:01, 25 June 2006 (BST)
    • Re - Yes, I did. Does it appear that I mean radio recievers? --Qhiiyr 11:00, 25 June 2006 (BST)
      • Re - It does. Maybe you should resubmit this suggestion and make it clearer. If you do, this is a Keep. --Otware 11:08, 25 June 2006 (BST)
  5. Keep I felt... a great disturbance in the Force... The great flavor of this suggestion definitely justifies a single line of text everytime a transmitter is destroyed. I mean how many transmitters are there on the most popular frequencies? Twenty tops? --Rheingold 11:11, 25 June 2006 (BST).
  6. Keep - The increase of spam would be too marginal to make any difference at all. This might be the best idea i've seen in days! It's just a minor change, and it doesn't effect your gaming experience for the worse in any way. --Frostbreath 11:25, 25 June 2006 (BST)
