Add by-user Time Zones

Timestamp: 17:31, 5 May 2006 (BST)
Type: Interface change
Scope: Everyone not in BST
Description: Add the option for users to pick a time zone in their profile so that timestamps for attacks, deaths, flares, feeding groans, etc are displayed in the user's native time rather than always in BST. This would probably require a "Daylight Saving Time?" checkbox. There is a Greasemonkey script here but it would make a fine addition to the game itself, mostly for those who aren't willing/able to find and run said script. Displaying a user's selected time zone to others is outside the scope of this suggestion.

Votes

  1. KILL - I like the standardisation. It allows a great degree of ease when communicating events with other players without everyone having to perform some mental acrobatics each time. --Grim s-Mod 17:39, 5 May 2006 (BST) Edit to clarify - At presnt one only has to run a single timezone change on anything, their known offset added onto the time presented to find out when it happened in their timezone. With the proposed setting one would have to compare both theirs and that of another user and make the adjustment. While it wouldnt be terribly bad if it was just one other person, the fact that this game is played by tens of thousands of people all over the world means that you will be comparing dozens of timezone differences to grab at what is at the moment pleasantly easy. --Grim s-Mod 18:15, 5 May 2006 (BST)
    • Cyberbob. Never, ever, fuck with my votes. --Grim s-Mod 17:49, 5 May 2006 (BST)
  2. Keep - Looks pretty good to me. --Cyberbob240CDF - Arb - W! 17:44, 5 May 2006 (BST) Kill - On fourth thought, this would make it a lot harder for groups to co-ordinate themselves. --Cyberbob240CDF - Arb - W! 07:50, 6 May 2006 (BST)
  3. Keep - Yes please. In answer to Grim: even if you tell everyone a time in BST, they still have to do the acrobatics to translate that into their own time zones. It sucks equally either way. --John Ember 17:46, 5 May 2006 (BST)
  4. Kill - If we change anything, I would like GMT instead. --John the Quicker 17:45, 5 May 2006 (BST)
  5. Kill - what grim said. *cries* --xbehave 18:04, 5 May 2006 (BST)
  6. Kill - Everbody should be able to translate a GMT/BST time into their own time, it's not that hard. And I don't see how you could change the game time system without changing the wiki time system too because there are many people who use both. -Craw 18:15, 5 May 2006 (BST)
  7. Kill - see above killl votes. --CPQD 18:16, 5 May 2006 (BST)
  8. Keep- why notAvicm 18:22, 5 May 2006 (BST)
  9. Keep - I personally find BST to be a major pain in the ass. I'd prefer to see my native timezone. Timid Dan 18:39, 5 May 2006 (BST)
  10. keep - Yay a good suggestion --ramby T--W! - SGP 18:42, 5 May 2006 (BST)
  11. Kill - What grim said. Also, I'm pretty sure the game is in GMT. - CthulhuFhtagn 19:09, 5 May 2006 (BST)
  12. Keep - It's been said. --Dan 19:16, 5 May 2006 (BST)
  13. Kill - I think standardised system works better, although it will be nice to have two separate time entries, one in GMT/BST, one in their own timezone. --Changchad 19:17, 5 May 2006 (BST)
  14. Keep- Hey, here's and idea. Why not just show both a standardized time and you're own time! (Both optional, so you could have one, both, or even neither) It's a concept. --Rozozag 19:32, 5 May 2006 (BST)
  15. Kill - If I where Krevan I'd allow firefox extensions because it means I won't have to code useless things like this. If you want your own time zone, get the script. Server load might not be a good reasns to vote Kill, but there are more important ideas to be put on the Peer Reviewed Page than a suggestion that is more or less already in the game. DavidMalfisto 19:31, 5 May 2006 (BST) Keep - Ah why not, I use the extension so it might as well be in the game. This certainly has nothing to do with my favourite radio station. David Malfisto 19:34, 9 May 2006 (BST)
    • Re - Not everyone is comfortable/competent with scripts. While I'm a programmer myself, I don't believe that ease-of-use should only be available to the computer literate. It's a small change to be sure, but I think it will increase user retention. --Fusilliban 20:36, 5 May 2006 (BST)
    • Re ... Fusilliban... as in the Fusilliban? Well if you're the author of this little ditty I may have to change my vote out of principle. Greasmonkey, however, is the definition of easy to use - it's advertised as making scripts easy to use. It takes two clicks to install a script - and if you're not good with computers that's even more reason to use firefox. Still... there's nothing wrong with this idea... and while I really shouldn't vote based on the author... I just don't have the stainless steel balls to vote against Fusilliban. DavidMalfisto 23:48, 5 May 2006 (BST)
  16. Keep - How hard would something like this be to code? Yeah, there are probably better suggestions to be implememented, but that's not our problem, is it?--Xavier06 19:51, 5 May 2006 (BST)
  17. Kill - I dont like this idea, but I don't think that it happens to be spiced ham. Things are better when standardized. Trust me. I don't honestly care if it's midnight when someone shoots me in the UK. I'm more interested in seeing it in my time.--Wifey 20:13, 5 May 2006 (BST) Excuse me. I misread it. It's still a "kill," though. I like standardized time.--Wifey 20:14, 5 May 2006 (BST)
  18. Kill - standardized time lets people communicate better.--Vista W! 00:34, 6 May 2006 (BST)
  19. kill - I prefer the "Malton time" to this. Good try, but no. Mattiator 01:27, 6 May 2006 (BST)
  20. Kill - wow, lets make gropus working together much harder to figure out when they need to do things now.--Teksura 07:36, 6 May 2006 (BST)
  21. Kill - I don't care or want to know where everyone lives this would just be confusing. --Spraycan Willy MalTel 22:34, 6 May 2006 (BST)
    • Re - Where other people live will not be disclosed to you. This only effects the displaying of timestamps on recent events that you see, to prevent you from having to juggle arithmatic to figure out how that compares to your local time. --Fusilliban 00:04, 8 May 2006 (BST)
      • Re - Thank you for clearing that up. If all the time zones diaplayed to me are the same I don't care either way. Please consider my vote withdrawn. --Spraycan Willy MalTel 09:47, 9 May 2006 (BST)
  22. Kill - Prahaps show both BST and whatever timezone your in. but just one thing thats not standardised isnt gunna work Nazreg 11:56, 7 May 2006 (BST)
  23. Keep - If not native TZ, we should at least get a UTC timestamp which is easier for everyone to deal with. -- Mettaur 17:58, 7 May 2006 (BST)
  24. Author Keep - Hm, I should have done this to begin with. I mean, obviously, I do feel my own idea is a good one. --Fusilliban 05:34, 9 May 2006 (BST)
  25. Keep Make it to where it's optional --DJSMITH 14:45, 17 May 2006 (BST)
