Swiers

I'm nominating him after a conversation we had at his talk page were he gave me his consent. Everyone that has been for a week on the wiki checking Special:Recentchanges has necessarily seen some of his contributions, that go far beyond the wiki itself including recent but already popular tools like iwitness and great ideas like X:00. It would be extremely tiring to number his contributions that are around the several thousands, all of those full of content (each worth 5 or 6 of my own =P) and passing the deffinition of good faith with flying colors. Well, I can't add anything else but this: Swiers has been the perfect candidate for a promotion since a while and he deserves it a lot. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRCT+1 16:54, 5 August 2007 (BST)

Accept - Is that how its done? Sure, I'll try to use any new editing features I have access to carefully and productively. I don't really know why people think there is a "consolidation" - Aside from Atticus and Vecusum / Karek, I couldn't even say who these folks are outside thier wiki names. Also, my impression is that the position has zero meaning, and simply grants access to new functions that CAN (not must) be used for certain maintenance tasks. So... yeah, it pretty much means other people don't have to clean up my mess any more when I create 20 pages and then decide to blank them all (true story). That's a good thing. • Vouch - A great user with great contribs and a superb judgement. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRCT+1 16:54, 5 August 2007 (BST)
  • Abstain - Swiers is a good guy and all but you sysops need to stop trying to consolidate "power" among people who you like. Stop nominating people and stop pressuring people you guys want into applying. This is something like the 5th person nominated in such a fashion.--Karekmaps?! 17:09, 5 August 2007 (BST)
  • Abstain - I'm with karek on this one. If you keep adding more and more sysops that don't really need or want it, that takes away from the meaning of the position. I don't know Swiers, but I'm sure he's a worthy candidate, so I'm keeping it as abstain. --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 19:23, 5 August 2007 (BST)
Just a side note, the position of a sysop is that of a glorified janitor. 95% of all the duties a sysop has is stripped of any personal judgment or power. The only place where a small amount of personal judgment is possible is the vandal banning page. which is also the page which currently suffers the most from a lack of active sysops as only me and Boxy are active there. Outside that page the position of sysop has no extra power or influence outside his status as an user. There is no special meaning to the position outside the implication that the sysop has been active and productive for a longer time then average. The position itself should give no special meaning or extra status to the user automatically. All that should be earned by the user personally.
Promotion to bureaucrat is wholly dependent on the regular users. Vandalism amongst sysops is non-existent so there is no favoritism there. And on everything else the weight of the opinion of a sysop is exactly the same of that a regular user. There just is no power to consolidate as the position doesn't really have any objectively.

Read but don't have a response. --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 17:56, 6 August 2007 (BST)
it was just meant as a clarifier to your and Kareks comment. But now I worry whether you not having a response is a good or bad thing...-- Vista  +1  21:38, 6 August 2007 (BST)
Its an ok thing, I think. I was going to type something, but didn't feel like finishing and the edit window was already up. --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 22:30, 6 August 2007 (BST)
Just another side note then, a user who doesn't want to do those jobs shouldn't be applying for the position, and when other sysops are telling them to apply and that they don't have to do any sysop work as a sysop obviously something is wrong there, especially when that is the reason why they accepts the nomination. So there is no point in him having the position if he's not going to use it for it's intended purposes.--Karekmaps?! 02:41, 7 August 2007 (BST)
Personally I think that for Swiers to do administrational work on this wiki, even when he sounds "not so willing to", you just have to lay the tools in front of him and see the magic. I know because I'm a bit like that too. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRCT+1 02:49, 7 August 2007 (BST)
Sysops always have had the liberty to chose which tasks they feel confortable with and want to do. It has never been a job but like regular users all edits and actions are made on a voluntary basis. Being a sysop simply means you get access to certain restricted edit actions. IP-check, banning users, moving and deleting pages. Actions that have been restricted because of the large amount of damage to the wiki vandals or inexperienced could do with them. They are only given to users that have shown themselves that they can be trusted with all those options. You need to qualify for the whole package, you get the whole package, but you only need to use part of it. Swiers has said that he didn't want to perform certain drama prone actions but that he did want to perform others. And he might up using all of them regardless.-- Vista  +1  13:02, 7 August 2007 (BST)
  • Vouch - He seems to want to make UD better, so why not give him the chance to help improve the wiki too via sysop powers?--Lachryma 19:26, 5 August 2007 (BST)
  • Vouch - The manner of his nomination has little bearing on whether he'd do a good job in the position. Swiers has always shown civility and patience, and his commitment to improving the game environment is beyond question. -- Atticus Rex mfu pif Δ 19:37, 5 August 2007 (BST)

  • Against-I like swiers' ideas, but since when do we promote people based on their ideas and not on their experiences. Jedaz Jon Pyre is great on the Suggestion pages, but he does not deserve sysop. Just because you are a good teacher does not make you a good janitor.--ShadowScope 20:27, 5 August 2007 (BST)
Uh...You do know Jedaz was a sysop before right? Up until the day he asked to be demoted, that is. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 23:59, 5 August 2007 (BST)
Hm. you know what, I was referring to Jon Pyre, not Jedaz. My bad. Correcting it.--ShadowScope 01:15, 6 August 2007 (BST)
I get what you mean, but Swiers case is very different to Jon Pyre. He has created many pages like the NT Status Map, and he updated and created a lot of location pages too. He currently hosts Jedaz's autoblock tool, so I guess he's at least a little responsible for the huge benefits and grow it has brought to the wiki (altough I can be wrong: I never was a blocker myself, so I don't inform me well about these kind of things). Jon, while he has been extremely constant and respected on the Suggestions page, has not participated on other community pages very actively until recently... at least until he gone idle around May. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRCT+1 02:58, 6 August 2007 (BST)
Just because you are a good teacher does not make you a good janitor. No, but by the same token, you don't give keys to the storage room to the janitor, and then refuse them to the teacher. At least, not if you trust the teachers to avoid stealing or spilling cleaning supplies. After all, a teacher can still clean up when some kid barfs on the floor. (Hmm, let me get the cattle prod, I don't thin this metaphore is giving in to the torture yet...) ΔΔ Swiers BigEYEwitnessLOGOgrey.png 17:42, 6 August 2007 (BST)

No. Because it's a tradition to put gold in the basket, as per the Amazing drama. And I uploaded the hamters after some noob tried to talk to BobHammero. --Sonny Corleone RRF CoL DORIS CRF pr0n 00:34, 6 August 2007 (BST)

  • Vouch - Both the NT Status Map and the autoblock are reasons to vouch for Seb. He is clearly interested in a better wiki, and actually contributing towards that. 'arm. 04:00, 6 August 2007 (BST)
In good faith, I have to say I had nothing to do with the autoblocker besides allowing a couple other folks admin access on my website. I think Jedaz did the coding, maybe based on a DB that Max Grivas put up. ΔΔΔ Swiers BigEYEwitnessLOGOgrey.png 04:05, 6 August 2007 (BST)
We should nominate Jedaz then!!! Nah, I don't think he would want the position back, and if he's with us then there won't be anybody to overthrow us when the tremendous power of being able to delete pages after passing requests and ban users after 8 repeated offenses starts affecting our brains. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRCT+1 05:56, 6 August 2007 (BST)
I'd love to code up an auto-generating version of the NT status map, but that's a bit beyond my skills. although considering it's just a few boolian variables for each of 200 or so locations... hmm.... ΔΔΔ Swiers BigEYEwitnessLOGOgrey.png 15:17, 6 August 2007 (BST)
