in portuguese, habilities has an "h" as its first letter... and curiously enough that isnt corrected by my spell checker :P --People's Commissar Hagnat [cloned] [mod] 03:41, 22 September 2007 (BST)

Yeah, some spell checkers use a trick where they let a few spelling mistakes through in exchange for using way less storage space. It's called bloom filtering, it's pretty clever. --ToejamStats Graph Updated 16:51, 22 September 2007 (BST)

manners

As a general rule I consider that anything typed should be no ruder than i would say in person. Debates can and do get heated fairly quickly but in life you watch your insults unless you are trying to start a physical fight! Hiding behind the anonymity of the internet so as to get away with offensiveness is cowardly, immature and pathetic and most of the community look down on it as such. Your section on being polite is a good start in recognizing such but needs to be much more forcefully stated! --Honestmistake 14:23, 26 September 2007 (BST)

To be perfectly honest, I think you summed up exactly why the rules surrounding being rude don't need to be enforced strongly with Hiding behind the anonymity of the internet so as to get away with offensiveness is cowardly, immature and pathetic and most of the community look down on it as such.. The only issue with stating it too forcefully would be that this is a guide that is designed for new wiki users, and as such will be (hopefully) friendly and informal. I think that forcefully stating anyting too much may make people overly nervous, or just turn them off completely. If oyu want to put a few sentences together to sum something up that treads the line between being informative whilst not being overly harsh, I'd be grateful.--Seventythree 15:55, 26 September 2007 (BST)

Veterans

I don't like how the guide enshrines veteran users. I consider myself one, and I'm not "scary", not "tired", not a "short tempered" person... or at least I don't consider myself like that. A good part of the text just seems some kind of divinization: They have seen it all. Also, we come back to the they were hardly praised for their constant glories and regularly punished for their own rare mistakes: that's really a lousy argument, as all users that contribute in any way are "hardly praised" for their contributions and "regularly punished for their own rare mistakes". And yeah, that at the ends it says "some aren't like that" doesn't cut it.

In resume, it would be cool to have that wording clearer and discard all those assumptions: things like those who refuse to learn are insulting by themselves. --Matthew Fahrenheit YRCT+1 14:44, 26 September 2007 (BST)

You are missing the keyword in this section, Some of them. Most users are tired of the bad things, and are still willing to keep their cool as another drama session starts. "Some of them", on the other hand, will simply jump the gun and use whatever means they can to stop this, using administration pages or simply insulting the user.
Now that you have pointed it out, I guess that rare word in the thankless work speech is really out of place, so i will remove it. The rest of the thankless work speech, though, is completely true. Grim was the one who took over suggestion cycling and no one ever said thanks to him, the same happened to Jedaz when he followed Grim's work. I have done a lot of work in several parts of this wiki, and hardly seen any nice comments about them. If this norm applies to all users, why not quote it as something that might have contributed to a veteran user to become grumpy ?
I am changing a few lines in the those who refuse to learn, but i think that it might earn it's stay. --People's Commissar Hagnat [cloned] [mod] 15:50, 26 September 2007 (BST)

Pretty good work, huh?

You know, I think this is working out pretty well! Is there anything else anyone wants to suggest as a section? Oh, and Hagnat, is my section on Help! Iv'e made a mistake! too vauge?--Seventythree 16:01, 26 September 2007 (BST)

It's a start. You should explain how the user can revert his own edits to a previous version using the history tab and strongly warn them to use the show preview button before saving a page. This section should also come before the I need more help, where can I get it? --People's Commissar Hagnat [cloned] [mod] 18:05, 26 September 2007 (BST)
