Categorisation

Are we set to go?

We can add more later on if we find others that are needed (no doubt we will), but just take a quick look over the Category Tree, one last time to see if there are any obvious ones missing... and then we may as well get started, eh -- boxytalk • 11:20 28 November 2007 (BST)

Would having a Category:Items with subcats of Equipment and Weapons make more sense rather then having them as part Character images? - Vantar 20:27, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
Well, it's under page elements at the moment. I dunno. I guess it's easy enough to recategorise the categories later, but I want to get too carried away with them until we start getting an idea which ones are going to be used the most -- boxytalk • 06:29 30 November 2007 (BST)

Should I post some messages on the signed-up users' talk pages? --Z. slay3r Talk  04:23, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

We'll need a sysop to categorize this image. --Akule School's in session. 06:03, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

And you'll have to go back through all those you started into, and put more categories on them. We're not just doing this to get them off the uncategorised list. We want to make them easier to find by putting them in all relevant categories, not just the first that comes to mind -- boxytalk • 06:38 1 December 2007 (BST)
I plan on it. Would you prefer that I just completely categorize the images rather than focusing on one aspect at a time? --Akule School's in session. 06:40, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
Yes, otherwise I don't see how we can ever find them all again. I know it's been slow getting started, but I think we need to be sure to get them right first time around. I'll make up a list of image categories for us to past onto each page, then we can just take out the ones that don't apply to the image -- boxytalk • 06:48 1 December 2007 (BST)
Quick question. Take a look at Image:CRGLogo01.jpg. Would those be the only categories for that image or would others apply? --Akule School's in session. 06:45, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
If you're unsure of an image, put Category:Unsorted Images on it (even if you put the most obvious ones on it) and leave a note in the edit history ~~
Actually, what would be nice would be to give examples of what would be in a particular category on each of the category pages, and give examples of multi-category images. --Akule School's in session. 06:50, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
Agreed. At the moment I'm basically figuring it out by induction, but it would be good to have some clear category descriptions. Also, I've been refraining from putting items into broad categories (such as Category:Page Elements) when they'd fit better into subcategories (such as Category:Icons). Would this be the preferred method? ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾ 07:06, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
I think the Page elements category is one that is tripping me up. I noticed that not many images have been put into there. I'm also working on adding the copyrighted content category to images I complete. --Akule School's in session. 23:55, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
Take a look at the Category Tree, if the image goes into one of the sub-categories of page elements, there's no need to put it into the actual page element category (same with the other ones like locations and groups). And please don't bring your copyright stuff into this. Do what you like, but we don't need that drama in here, thank you all the same -- boxytalk • 00:06 5 December 2007 (BST)

Group Images

I think it would be better to only make categories for large groups, rather than have a category for every group... just put it in the group images category -- boxytalk • 07:55 1 December 2007 (BST)

If you put an image in a groups own category (eg Category:82nd) , there is no need to put it in to Category:Group Images as well -- boxytalk • 08:57 2 December 2007 (BST)

The only problem that springs to mind about this method is that the image wouldn't appear anywhere under any Category:Images subcats. How much of an issue is this? ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾ 11:03, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
I don't think it's much of a problem. If the images are only useful for individual groups, they shouldn't be available in the images section. Some groups get mighty touchy if others use their images (talk about touchy). If they're generic images, they can be categorised under other sections -- boxytalk • 11:23 2 December 2007 (BST)

Edit summary

Just thought I'd share: When doing this sort of thing, I like to link back to the project in my edit summary - something like:

Image Categorization Project - Add categories (You can help!)

This lets people know what we're doing and how to help out if they're interested. Feel free to steal the idea if you like it. :) ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾ 04:52, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Good idea, will start doing it too -- boxytalk • 05:11 2 December 2007 (BST)

Big Groups of Images

If you come across largeish groups of very similar images in the list, don't be afraid to make a new category for them. For example, I make Category:Whitlock Building because there were a lot of screenshots and charts associated with it. Same could be done with those suburb danger level ones -- boxytalk • 05:23 2 December 2007 (BST)

I was just about to ask people's thoughts on that. I concur. ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾ 07:18, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Suggestions for new Categories

If you want to add new categories, place suggestions here -- boxytalk • 12:52 2 December 2007 (BST)

Unused Images

I guess we're going to come across heaps of these. I wouldn't worry about them too much (they're findable in the special pages section). Although, perhaps an unused category could be useful, for images that are totally useless... then I (or the other sysops) can just go through it and nuke 'em, or use them if they're of interest -- boxytalk • 11:27 2 December 2007 (BST)

How about Category:Unused Images to coincide with speedy deletions, and to give the sysops an idea of what is eligible for deletions?--User:Axe27/Sig 19:31, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Please! I've been sticking them down as unsorted, till Kamden shouted at me :'(--SeventythreeTalk 22:36, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

For the moment, I believe it would be useful to mark images as Category:Unused Images, because Boxy has already expressed his wish for an unused images category. --User:Axe27/Sig 22:37, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, that's fine, and putting them into unsorted isn't so bad either. We'll be going through them again -- boxytalk • 01:09 3 December 2007 (BST)
With the unused images, I think before we delete them, we should cherry pick the best of them out and archive them. They may be useful/interesting in the future -- boxytalk • 01:11 3 December 2007 (BST)

By the way, even if you put images into the unused category, please put them in any other categories they may fit as well. Always put them into as many categories as possible -- boxytalk • 01:27 3 December 2007 (BST)

Important Locations

If we find locations with lots of images associated with them, I suggest a category for that building. For example, Category:Caiger Mall or Category:Creedy, or Category:Blackmore Building -- boxytalk • 01:15 3 December 2007 (BST)

Why not just make that a subcat of the TRP/Non-TRP ones.--Karekmaps?! 19:30, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
I wasn't keen on that, given that some of them have a lot of non-image links in them, but yeah, I think I will now -- boxytalk • 22:50 4 December 2007 (BST)

Ribbons

Do we need a ribbons category as a sub-category of Icons? Damn those survivor groups love their ribbons, eh :) -- boxy talki 09:17 6 December 2007 (BST)

Suburb Danger Levels

There seem to be quite a few screenshots of the suburb map, showing the changing danger levels over time. Perhaps we need a sub category there too. What to name it though? Suburb Danger? -- boxy talki 01:21 27 December 2007 (BST)

New Category

Ok, I've created an used Images category and incorporated it into the template. --User:Axe27/Sig 22:45, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

And I just made a category for Duplicated Images, so that we can go back later and change the links to them so that we only need one of any multiple set -- boxy talki 09:11 6 December 2007 (BST)

Just added a category for NecroNet scans as a sub-category of screenshots -- boxy talki 01:18 27 December 2007 (BST)

Category:NecroWatch vs Category:Necronet

Maybe you know, maybe you don't but there's such a project like NecroWatch. We are maintaining necronet scans. our images are in category Category:NecroWatch and Category:Screenshots. Now i find out that there is also category Category:Necronet... that is dupelicating Category:NecroWatch. Something should be decided here. --~~~~ [talk] 16:58, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

I think that one or the other needs to be a sub-category of the other. Can NecroWatch be a category for the group images, with a sub-category of necronet where all the necronet scans go? -- boxy talki 11:53 4 January 2008 (BST)
Hm... That is a genuine decision! I'll pass it to NecroWatch talk page --~~~~ [talk] 12:19, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Images needing Revisions Deletion

I think there should be a category for images with revisions needing to be deleted. That category could then be linked in A/SD, so sysops can clear these images. Wikipedia has something like that. --People's Commissar Hagnat [cloned] [mod] 17:23, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Actually deleting revisions of images is a task a normal user is able to acomplish, so i don't see a reason for A/SD --~~~~ [talk] 20:29, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
Ummm, I don't think so, Duke -- boxy talki 22:30 21 January 2008 (BST)
Delete the oldest revision of this this image if you can -- boxy talki 22:33 21 January 2008 (BST)
The action you have requested is limited to users in the group "Sysops".. Ok, you were right. i never clicked on the link but by seeing it assumed that it will work. my bad --~~~~ [talk] 06:39, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
It really gives you a link that doesn't work... silly wiki! -- boxy talki 07:27 22 January 2008 (BST)
You mean images that need regular deletion of their old revisions? The necrowatch images are the only ones I can think of that regularly get updates. Are there any others? -- boxy talki 22:30 21 January 2008 (BST)
i'm a tiny bit against deleting revisions of necronet scans - i like a lot to click through them and see how zombie population was changing/moving in the area --~~~~ [talk] 06:39, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
I like to look through the history sometimes too, but it's not really worth the diskspace for the little info it contains -- boxy talki 07:27 22 January 2008 (BST)
I have some of them linked. example. And unless Kevan will complain himself that they are taking too much diskspace... Oh, no, I recall him saying otherwise - there's a damn lot of diskspace! There's really no need to delete them all. There are however exceptions - when some person uploads same image a big number of times (i can find link if needed) --~~~~ [talk] 07:39, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
Damn, you already deleted some? Can't find HerbertBuildingNecronet.png for 7th January o_O --~~~~ [talk] 22:26, 22 January 2008 (UTC)
Grim and Mobius have deleted most of them I think. It was discussed on Mobius' talk page. They are scheduled deletions, if you want to make an exception of these, then you'll have to make some sort of policy on it. If you've got one you really want to keep, I suggest uploading it as an image itself -- boxy talki 00:00 23 January 2008 (BST)
OK, i will. Although i still don't understnad why we delete revisions of images, but don't, for example, revisions of pages... >_> --~~~~ [talk] 07:41, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
Disk space. Images are much larger files than text. BTW, Kevan does delete old page revisions occasionally -- boxy talki 04:59 24 January 2008 (BST)
It's been almost a year since the last he did as far as I know. But yeah, images, especially pngs, can be space hogs. That and it prevents accidental image reversions.--Karekmaps?! 05:03, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
Disk space is a weak argument. 1)kevan stated somewhere that there is more than enough of it for wiki. 2)take a look at image folders, most of the space there is taken my semi-random images by users / groups. not by revisions of necronet scans. p.s. i'm not argueing, just discontented (pun intended) --~~~~ [talk] 20:35, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
Well you know what to do if you want it changed -- boxy talki 10:10 25 January 2008 (BST)

Scent Maps

I see a LOT of them, apparently being uploaded regularly. Maybe we should make a category for them (and figure out which other categories we want to apply to them), and get the people uploading them to categorize them upon uploading? --PdeqTalk* 04:17, 8 May 2008 (BST)

Heh- I probably uploaded at least 95% of those. I did make a category for them- Category:Scenteral Intelligence Map/SIM spot images. I even made a template that saves a bit of typing when you add the category to the image- SIMsniff. Its just that, when processing batches of 10+ images at a time (as I;ve been doing) every day, its easy to get lazy / distracted and forget to use the category. And the category also is really not that useful in this case- even as the map's creator, I can't think of any reason I'd want to look at that category. Even if I did want to look at it, the gallery format is uses sucks for that purpose, because the images are so tiny and the image names get truncated.
Truth told, only 81 of the images are likely be in use at any one time. The rest will be images that nothing links to, and could safely be deleted, just like any other unused image. They only have a useful lifespan of, at most, one week, so by the time they are more than half a month old, they are very unlikely to still be in use. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 04:55, 8 May 2008 (BST)
I;ve overhauled the process of updating the map so that the only images that ever get used are the 81 in Category:SIM images ; they just get directly updated. So all those other ones... can die. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 10:42, 20 May 2008 (BST)

Congrats...but...

Congratulations on finishing this Herculean task! I've rarely seen such dedication, and I am very impressed! However, I couldn't help but notice the 65 images that appeared after y'all finished. Can I safely assume that this project will continue indefinitely? --Pedentic 04:43, 7 August 2008 (BST)

Seems so, every day or three someone goes in and empties that list of new uploads.--Karekmaps?! 05:32, 7 August 2008 (BST)

Error creating thumbnail:

Lately, I've been noticing an increasing number of images with this error message when viewing the image page (and other special pages listing images). Anyone know what's going on? -- boxy 10:17, 24 July 2014 (BST)

Nope. --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 21:42, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
Ran into this problem this week with our group advert image. Its not just on the image page, but also when that image is used as a thumbnail (i.e. when thumnailsize is used). It seems the wiki is having problems creating thumbnails of uploaded images on recently uploaded images. Aichon may have looked into it already. He helped us with a workaround. ~Vsig.png 23:31, 24 July 2014 (UTC)
