Bear McAlister in full firefighter gear

Bear McAlister is from Santlerville. He's mid-thirties, a huge man physically and running to fat. He sports a bushy ginger beard and ruddy cheeks. He's pretty much the personification of the old cliche that fat people are jolly. You'd think that a zombie apocalypse wouldn't exactly be a cheery circumstance, but it's actually reassured Bear that the world really is as cruel as he's expected all these years. Once the not-knowing was out of the way, Bear reached an epiphany about the things that matter most to him.

The accident

Bear is a firefighter with 57 Truck. On a job about six months ago, he found himself hemmed in by fire after getting everyone out of a burning building in north Santlerville. With no choice but to jump from a third-storey window, Bear took the plunge. There was no-one waiting to catch him. He hit the tarmac hard, and badly injured his back and one of his ankles - he still walks with a limp. Bear is a popular member of the team, and for the last six months, while recovering he's been kept on around the firehouse to cook, clean the rig, look after everyone's equipment and generally lift the mood. However, lately he's been sliding into a dark place. He's been beginning to believe that he'll never get put back on active duty again - he drinks too much, eats too much, he's badly out of shape and his marriage recently disintegrated - he only gets to see his little daughter every second weekend. How could things get any worse?

Z-Day

Bear's present for Ember

When all hell broke loose, Bear was getting ready to drive south to Danversbank, after a shift at the firehouse, to visit his six-year-old daughter Ember. She and her mother - his ex-wife - live in an apartment off Hagger Way, and Ember goes to Twill Alley School. When the dead started filling the streets near the firehouse, Bear became embroiled in a number of local struggles to beat them back. When he finally made it south to Danversbank, days later, he went straight to his ex-wife's place and found it empty, all locked up, with no signs of a struggle. He still hopes against hope that he'll find his family, and still carries a grimy, bloodstained firefighter teddy bear in his pocket, a gift for his daughter that one day he still hopes to give her. Bear joined up with a likely group of larrikins called the Danversbank Relief and Reconstruction Project to do whatever he can in the suburb, while he waits to see if he can pick up any sign of his family - but every day, he becomes more committed to his new comrades-in-arms, and the DRRP's vision for a better future.
