Project Sleep is pretty much done. Just needs coverage now. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 09:06, 19 May 2007 (BST)

Malton Demographics

Model on Manchester and Liverpool, similar city sizes / characteristics.

Some from Wikipedia -

Climate:

 • Whilst Malton has a relatively damp climate it has an undeserved reputation as a rainy city. The average annual rainfall is 979 mm. Its average annual rainfall total is comparable with that of Rome. Snowfall is not a common sight in the city, due to urban warming, however many roads leading out of the city can be closed due to snow.

Location

 • South-West England. Lies in a bowl-shaped land area bordered to the north and east by hills.

Demographics

 • In the 2001 census, 87% of people identified themselves as "White", 5.9% as "Indian" or "Pakistani", 2.3% as "Black Caribbean" and 1.4% as "Black African".

Economy

 • Mainly heavy-industry based during the 20th century. Began to decline during the early 1990's. Moved to finance, business and service orientated economy.

Culture

 • After the decline of the heavy industries of the 20th century, Malton council wanted to change the city's image. It was designated to be a cultural centre, with a large amount of public museums and art galleries.

Streamline suggestions guidelines and rules

You may hear me rant about stupid suggestions. I blame this for a lack of educating newbies on the suggestions procedures. This is the system we should have:

Talk:suggestions (first) --->

Iron out problems/community discussion --->

Final editing before moving to suggestions page (should stop most screw-ups of the template. Most) --->

Community voting --->

Archive into appropriate category

Talk:Suggestions#The_Ten_Commandments_of_Suggestion-Making - This is pretty good stuff. I think my job in this category is pretty much done.

Signature Template

Using superscript ( links here ) for links other than user name is common practice - such as:

Dux Ducis T S
P SSZ

Would be:

Dux Ducis T S P SSZ

Note that links to the page you are on are typically in bold, such as the P for this page, "Projects"

Adding colour

Now it's time to add some colour to your signature (if you want). To do so, we use the color template:

COLOR

Note that you only want to color the text, not the page that is the link, like so:

SaddleBrown

So let's apply it to the whole template:

SaddleBrown SaddleBrown
SaddleBrown SaddleBrown
SaddleBrown

Becomes:

DuxDucis T S P SSZ

Things not to do

 • Blinking text like so.
 • Text that is too large and breaks the lines of the page.
 • External links to malicious sites that do things like close the browser, etc.

For further guidelines on signatures, go here for the official Urban Dead wiki policy.

Projects

Welcome Newbie template

Hi Dux Ducis/Archive/Projects! As we can see, you're new to this wiki. Welcome! It's OK to be new, and we encourage new blood to join and enrich our community. At the same time, we understand that no one is a perfect wiki editor straight off the bat, and so you could use some tips. Please take the time to read them all.

General Editing
 • Never delete someone else's edits, comments, responses, etc. off of community pages. To do so is considered vandalism.
 • The correct way to sign an edit with a timestamp is "~~~~", and there's this button Button sig.png on the top of the edit page that writes it for you if you want. Just add ~~~~ to the end of your edit so that we can know who made it!
 • You may want to know how your edits will look before they have been saved, to make sure that nothing is wrong. Use the "Preview" button before the "Save" button; it's your friend!
 • If you're slow in your editing and there's an editing conflict, you might not understand the error that you get. The easiest way to overcome the edit conflict is to copy whatever you have been writing, go back with your browser, and then reenter the edit page so that you can add your edits without deleting those made before yours.

Further help for editing the wiki can be found on the Help page.

Project Mentor

Project Mentor has been recently set up to allow new wiki users to have a more experienced wiki veteran mentor them for the first few weeks. Visit its page for more information!

Your User Page

One of the great things about the wiki is that every user can have his or her own user page! These pages are located in the User namespace — in other words, they all begin with "User:" (yours is User:Dux Ducis/Archive/Projects). The appropriate place to write about yourself or your characters is on your user page, or a subpage of that page (e.g., User:Dux Ducis/Archive/Projects/Your Character's Name). Do not create pages about yourself outside of the User namespace. Those pages will be moved into subpages of your user page, and speedily deleted.

User Talk Pages

Every user has a talk page, found by clicking the "discussion" link at the top of his or her user page, or by going directly to it (yours would be User talk:Dux Ducis/Archive/Projects). If you have a question for someone, or want to say something to him or her, his or her user talk page is the place.

However, many users on the wiki have established specific guidelines for how their user talk pages are to be treated — where new comments should go, how they should be written, what is or is not okay to talk about, etc. Be sure to look for guidelines on the talk page before you leave a comment.

For further details on the generally accepted way of leaving comments, read here

The Suggestions Page

We know that as a new user, you want to share your ideas with us. But a community as big as ours has already seen all kind of suggestions, and it's possible that we've already seen something very similar to the ideas you have. Follow these simple guidelines to make sure that your suggestion gets the respect that it deserves:

 • You should always first submit a suggestion on the suggestion talk page. That way you can alter and edit your suggestion from community feedback, giving it a greater chance of getting through into peer reviewed after voting.
 • If writing your own suggestion after reading the guidelines looks too complicated for you, ask for help.

Template Discussion, Notes and Alterations

 • "For further details on the generally accepted way of leaving comments, read here." - Deleted the stuff about leaving comments and indenting, really should be on another page. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 06:52, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
 • Submitting suggestions - I streamlined this section, with emphasis on asking for help and first posting it on the suggestion talk page. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 23:49, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
I think the whole suggestions part should be waaaay shortened. Overall, though, the template looks like it's coming along nicely.--Lachryma 00:01, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
How do you think it should be shortened? --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 00:56, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
Hmm...It should be:
"We know that as a new user, you want to share your ideas with us. But a community as big as ours has already seen all kind of suggestions, and it's possible that we've already seen something very similar to the ideas you have.
In essence, if you want to share your suggestion, read the tutorial here and you will have an easier time" or some such.--Lachryma 05:03, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
What about: When making a suggestion, be sure to check Frequently Suggested page to know what and what not would be good to suggest. or something along those lines. --Cap'n Silly T/W/P/CAussieflag.JPG 05:12, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
You fool, we are gonna make a new page that sums up all the suggestions stuff then walks the newbs through suggesting something! The current pages go on and on, they are spread over like 4 pages, and they can be confusing. We are gonna fix that, with concise language.--Lachryma 05:20, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
You communist, uh.... okay, ran out of material. --Cap'n Silly T/W/P/CAussieflag.JPG 05:29, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
I'm liking these ideas guys, thanks. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 00:05, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
 • Deleted the bottom paragraph explaining the do's and don'ts of editing suggestions. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 06:06, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
You make the bare skeleton of the page, (call it The Suggestions Page For Newbies or something) and I'll refine it in my gigantic amounts of free time.--Lachryma 22:36, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
Maybe it would be a good idea to get rid of the entire section on making suggestions. That way, by the time people have found the suggestions page, they'll have had more experience with the game, and the wiki, and their suggestions might turn out better. The link to the suggestions page would still be on the main page, so it's not like we'd be hiding it, we just wouldn't be pointing it out. --Toejam 21:13, 27 February 2007 (UTC)
Thing is Toejam, many users sign up just to make suggestions. I don't think we should leave it up to them to find the section. I think the guidelines and long, complicated rules are to blame for many of the crap suggestions. That, and not using the talk:suggestions page either. All suggestions should start there first. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 02:34, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
Do you (or anyone else I guess) know if it would be possible to have that template appear on the talk page of newbies automatically when they join up, so it's there when they start editing, rather than waiting for someone to notice they're having trouble? -- boxy T L ZS Nuts2U DA 06:50, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
Dude, totally no idea. I think it would have to be something like a bot that edits everyone's talk page with that template When a new namespace is created. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 07:01, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
Could be... or maybe something Kevan could do in the wiki settings -- boxy T L ZS Nuts2U DA 07:08, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
Actually, why not ask the man himself then? --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 07:12, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

I think Lachryma has the right idea, To shorten the box by just having the absolute vital points with a link to a FAQ-page on that editing subject. That way each subpart would have only 3 lines or so. Btw, Dux I answered your question on my talk page.--Vista 17:16, 28 March 2007 (BST)

Let's see what are you guys up to now... mmm... i see... eh..? OMG WTF BBQ??!!!1 NO WAI IMMA GOING TO LET YAH DO THIS!!! I HEREBY FORBID YOU TO EDIT MY TEMPLATE!!

Nah, now seriously: To shorten it is a good idea, as newbies are more likely to read it if there's less yadda yadda to read. You have my support. Also, talking about automatization, that was a matter that I brought as early as last year's September (see?), but was ignored and I think I got a wiki vacation soon after. Now the page that I wanted to use seems inaccesible, but Kevan may have a word or two to say about that. Maybe if you make all the changes you want to and then, when the template looks even prettier, ask him about the issue? --Matthew Fahrenheit YRCT+1 03:00, 12 April 2007 (BST)
