Caiger Mall Has Fallen

Part One

Malton chronicle.jpg This story is part of the Malton Chronicles.
This story is fan-made, and is not officially part of any background history for Urban Dead.

This is the story of one couragous survivor during and in the wake of the seiges of Caiger Mall. However, despite his and others efforts, the mall fell again, after what can probably be called the Fourth Seige of Caiger Mall. As of now, the mall has been in zombie hands since Febuary 8, 2007. Let us begin.

The Nightmares

Hank had been having flashbacks again. He did not want to think about what lay ahead, let alone what would come soon. Just a good night's sleep, that's all. Of course, he would never sleep soundly again. Not since the fall of the mall. Not since the fall of Malton. Not since the hordes invaded. He just went into his makeshift sleeping bag, and wept. He wept until he fell asleep, his body taking on the major effects of fatigue. Then went into his nightmares he began to have every night since the final seige.

The First Seige

Hank had walked up to the large structure, wich he had recognised as the old mall. He thought it would be abandoned and good for looting. His plan was to loot it and keep moving. But he was very mistaken, for even as he approached the building, a small crowd of survivors with guns and lots of ammo, and even a few scientists in lab coats. He heard one of them yell, "Zed! Zed next to the Latrobe building!" and before he knew it, every gun was pointed at him. Then, someone else yelled, "Hold your fire! He's human!" Hank then saw that same person come up to him. "Who are you and what is your buisness?" he asked. The man looked like the leader of the group. "My name is Hank. I was coming here to loot the mall, but..." Hank managed before the man interupted him. "My name is William Lakran, but most people just call me General Lakran. I am the leader of the Caiger Mall Survivors. We have received word that a rather large group of zeds are heading this way and planning to seige the mall, would you care to help out?" Hank was speechless. "We could really use your help, if you are intersted." "Alright, I guess I could help," he replied, confused. "Good. By the way, what is your last name?" "Er, my last name is Gordon," he said, still very much in surprise. "Alright, troops, remember; the only ones that are to actually stay in the mall are the members of the skeleton crew," said General Lakran. It had been a week since he had arrived. It was November 10, and it was beleived that the horde would arrive today. "The rest of you are to remain in your designated safehouse until needed, in wich case you will clear the zombies, and dump any bodies outside." He then pulled out a hat and said, "Each one of you will pick a peice of paper out of this hat. That peice of paper will have your safehouse listed on it. When you enter the safehouse, you will find more than enough portable radios to give to your entire team. These will be used to relay information to you from one of the four radios in the mall. You will also find a permanent radio. This is only to be used when your building is attacked. As for the skeleton crew, you will also have portable and stationary radios. The safehouse occupants are to use CQD for emergencies, while the skeleton crew will use the SOS. If you are in a safehouse and are in need of assistance, please identify your safehouse. Now, I am going to pass this around, and I do not want you to trade, or you will find yourself outside when the bulk of the hordes attack." He then passed the hat around. Hank picked one and opened it up. He saw 'skeleton crew' written on it. Hank served the skeleton crew well. Every once in a while, he would go outside, clear out all the zombies he could, go back in, and report on the status. Even when the bulk of the attack came on November 25, he was able to keep his head. On December 2, the majority of the zeds either fled or were dead on the streets. The rest of them were called back in. "Good job, everyone, we have won a victory over the zeds," said General Lakran, who was grinning more than he had been known to.

The Second Seige

It was February 4th, 2006, and Hank was beggining to worry. A rather large group of zeds, reffered to as Mall Tour '06, because they attacked mainly malls, was beggining its seige on Caiger. All the malls had fallen already. Caiger, the final mall left in survivor hands, was now about to be attacked. "At least we have the survivors from the other malls," he thought. In every mall that had fallen, the survivors went to Caiger. Suddenly, he heard distant gunshots and saw a flare signal. It was almost time. Finally, on March 5th, the hordes came. The south east corner was constantly attacked, and Hank knew he would be called outside. Then, finally, General Lakran said, "Gordon! Grab your weapons and get your buttox out there!" Hank grabbed his two pistols and fire axe, and dashed outside. He pulled out his pistol and pulled the trigger. It promptly responded with a click. "Gah!!!" he yelled, realising he forgot to load them. He then pulled out two clips and began to load them into his pistols. A zombie walked up to him, and bit at him. He dodged it, and shot it inbetween the eyes. He looked up, and shot every zombie in sight. Then he ran out of ammo. He pulled out the fire axe, and chopped a good bit of them into peices. He kept killing them, until he finally got called back in. A few days later, on the 16th of March, General Lakran spoke to everyone on the radio. "Attention everyone. The horde has declined greatly. I am pleased to announce that we might win, but do not let up on defence-there are still a lot of zeds out there." Hank asked if he would be called out again, and the General responded, "No, Hank. You have done more than your fair share, therefore, you deserve a rest." Finally, it was over; on March 29th, the horde had gone almost entirely. However, most of the zombies reformed into a group called The Shining Ones. General Lakran had reported a distress message on the radio by the Dunnell Hills PD, with gunshots and screams of terror and agonising pain in the back ground. The Third Seige

On the 23rd October, 2006, Hank's worst nightmares began to come true. The largest and most organized zed group known, Shacknews, had begun to attack Latrobe during the night. Hank knew that it was a Necrotech building, and extremely valuable, for that was the only type of place you could find the Necrotech Revivification Syringe, the only way to make a zombie human. A friend he knew since the first seige (his name was John Darringer) was a Necrotech employee, and Hank eventually was able to not only use syringes, but also Necronet and DNA extractors. Of course, the zombies kept breaking in; he hoped and prayed that his freind would be alright, but more and more survivors came into the mall, instead of defending Latrobe. A few survivors stayed and fought, but as the zeds broke in more and more, their numbers dwindled. As if that wasn't enough, Shacknews called in for reinforcements. A few days later, the Oxley building came under seige. Hank realised what the zeds were doing; first, they would cut off Caiger's recources, then attack. With no revives or resources, the mall was . Then, suddenly, the barricades in the Northwest of the mall beganscrewed. Then the inevitable; Latrobe fell. More than 100 zeds banging on the doors coupled with more and more survivors falling back to the mall proved too much. Miraculously, John managed to survive, though he was the very last one to leave with his life. Shacknews then focused on other Necrotech buildings in the area. Finally, the horde attacked the mall. First Hank heard pounding on the doors in the Southeast corner. Then, the pounding became louder and louder until the doors flew open. He drew out his pistol and opened fire on them; he and the other survivors were soon able to clear out the bodies and rebuild the barricades. However, the zeds breached the barricades more and more often. Then, Hank heard banging in the Northwest corner, wich happened to be the least populated. He ran to that corner as fast as he could, but when he got there, the zeds were already pouring in. He and every other defender attacked and attacked and rebuilt the barricades, but a bunch of them had already died. This continued until most of the survivors in the mall. Soon, only 14 were left. Hank could hear General Lakran practically yelling into the radio, "SOS! This is Caiger Mall, in need of immediate assistance!" over and over again. Hank realised he was sending a distress message on every frequency, and began to relax a little. He knew that an army of survivors would soon arrive at the mall to help them. He was wrong. After a few minutes, an army of survivors did come, but they were not the kind Hank hoped for. These survivors had the intention of tearing down their barricades with crowbars, destroyng their generators, and killing everyone in the mall. Because of this, the rest of the defenders in that corner either died or ran. As Hank fell back to the Southwest corner with General Lakran, he knew that the entire mall was screwed. He looked back and saw a zombie ransacking it. He realised that this meant not being able to barricade in that corner, so now they were really screwed. Hank was right this time. Now that the barricades were breached, a megahorde of zombies shambled in, and there were only about, maybe, 900 survivors left, and they were rapidly declining. When the Southwest corner had only a few survivors left, General Lakran ordered a final retreat. For the first time ever, Caiger Mall was in zombie hands as of November 1st, 2006.

The Reclamation

Hank's cell phone beeped. He looked at the text message from General Lakran, wich said, "Alright, team, it's time. Get ready for reclamation." It was December 24, 2006, a day before Christmas. Hank and the rest of his team were finally getting ready to retake the mall, after having to abandon it. Finally, they had finished reviving all his team mates who got zombified. Hank knew he probably would not need to, but he kept one syringe-just in case. He pulled out his pistols and loaded them. The plan was that they would first take Latrobe, then start on the Northwest corner of the mall. He finally met up with the rest of his team, in front of Latrobe. They each checked their gear one last time, and went in. When Hank stepped inside, he saw a lone zombie. Raising his pistol, he shot it inbetween the eyes, killing it insantaneously. General Lakran walked up and said, "Good work, Gordon. Darringer, Jennings, and Smith, I want you to clear anymore zeds and repair this building. Carter, set up the equipment. Anyone who wants to stay here and help defend from another zombie attack may do so, but the rest of you will go and help me and Gordon reclaim the mall." A rather large chunk of the group stayed behind, while the rest went to the mall. Hank entered the mall, and what he saw made him cringe. Everything was in disorder, and it had no barricades-every door in the building was open. Then, he smelt the foul stench of rotting flesh. He looked over and saw a group of zombies. He drew his pistols and began to help clear out the mall. The clean-up crew began to repair the building. Once all the zombies were cleared, they rebuilt the barricades and set up a generator and a radio in each corner. Finally, they could rebuild.

The Fourth Seige

It was February 3rd, 2007, and Hank was once again on his guard. There were some break-ins in the Latrobe building, with moderate to heavy casualties. He was wary of what happened last time, and so now stocked 5 syringes. The next day, his worst fears came true. On the radio, somone screamed, "Help! Im in the Latrobe building, and we've got 40 zeds in here and 20 survivors!" General Lakran sent reinforcements in, and the number was 26 survivors against 7 zeds, then 25 survivors to 2 zeds. The only problem with that is the fact that the doors to the street were open and were stuck that way! General Lakran sent more reinforcements in, but it wasn't enough. By the end of the day, the zeds outnumbered the survivors by 190 to 46. Latrobe, at that point, was screwed. The next day, Latrobe fell. Hank, however, had bigger things to worry about; the Northwest corner was breached, and they were fighting with all their might. Hank was just finishing off a zombie when General Lakran ordered them to fall back to the Northeast and Southwest corners. Eventually, they were ordered to fall back to the Southeast. Finally, there were very few survivors left in the building. General Lakran ordered a final retreat, and all of the remaining survivors fled. He could hear a survivor on his radio saying, "Caiger Mall has fallen. I repeat; Caiger Mall has fallen." Hank went outside and found his freind John, nearly dead on the streets. Hank began to walk up to him when a zombie appeared out of nowhere, preparing to deal the final death blow to him. Hank drew his fire axe, and ran over to assist his comrade. Hank fought long and hard for his freind, when finally, Hank killed the evil creature. But, alas, as the zombie fell, it landed on top of him and bit him. Hank yelled in pain. He got up and then chopped off the zombie's head. He looked up and saw a zombie heading towards him. He quickly picked up his freind and carried him away from the bulk of the hordes. Hank saw an old church that would be perfect for him to stay in. He set John down, and began to barricade the building. He then went back over to John. "I am going to die, Hank, you ought to just give up," he said. "I'm infected. I don't know how I managed to live this long, even." "I'm infected, too, so I don't really care," replied Hank. He was looking around for a first aid kit, because he knew they cured infections. Then, he found one. "John! I found a first aid kit!" he said. He got no reply. Dropping the first aid kit, he turned around and said, "Johnny?" Then, he saw that John was dead. His freind, the one who taught him about Necrotech equipment, was dead. He looked in his pockets and saw that he only had one syringe; he dropped the other four. Knowing that he was dying, too, he thought it best he treat himself first. When he finished, he looked at John. He was begginning to move, and so Hank crept up to him and restrained him. He then took the syringe and stuck it in his neck; John then went into convulsions and died again. It made Hank want to vomit, even though he knew this was supposed to happen. Then, his cell phone beeped. It was General Lakran. The text message said, "I'm at a hospital. This place is 'caded and powered, so it should be safe. Where are you?" Hank replied, "I'm in an old church, with John." "Is he alright?" "He's dead." "You better burn the body." "Don't worry, I used a syringe on him." "Oh, ok. Just come here, then, and bring him with you. I'll give you the coordinates." Hank went over to the hospital with John on his back. He had to wait a day, but he got there alive. He went in, and saw General Lakran with a grim expression on his face. "Put John over there, on that stretcher, and we'll put him in a hospital room until he comes to." Hank did as he was told. He then asked, "Any information on anyone else?" "Other than bad news that gets worse by the minute, no. It seems that some people in the surrounding buildings were holding out in a last effort to save themselves and the mall. Today, I just received word that St. Izzy's, Latrobe, Hollom's, and the warehouse have all fallen," he replied. After a few moments of scilence, General Lakran said, "You know what we have to do, don't you?" "What?" replied a weary Hank, extremely tired. "We must plan for another reclamation. Track down all of the others and try to retake it." Hank just looked down at the floor, and said, "You're right. But we will need some ammo. Both my guns are dry." "So is my shotgun, but before we do that, we must get you a room, too," replied General Lakran.

It Is Time

Hank woke up, like he always did, right then. He never got farther than that, ever. Just then, General Lakran came in and said, "Oh, good, you're up already. Guess what? We begin Reclamtion today."

To be continued as soon as Caiger Mall is retaken. Come on, guys, get off your lazy buttoxes!!!!!!!! EDIT: Okay, now that Caiger is rebuilding, I will begin work on part 2 immediately.- Modernplague
