Creating A Group Page

So. You've got an idea for a group? That's good. So you want to make a group page?

Keep it simple

The largest group in UD history? The Dead. Their wiki page has less than 30 words on it. You don't have to write an essay to get people interested. Try reading PEZ United. Go on try it.

( Twiddles thumbs )

Done it? Was it Fun? Organised? Useful? If you do want to put a lot of info on your group pages, use sub pages with easy links like the Philosophe Knights do in their sidebar.

Remember a wiki page is the chance to inform. The information you need is simple.

  • What kind of group are you?
  • Where and in which city are you based?
  • How people can contact you.

Be Professional

Building on this your wiki page should be visually appealing. Make sure its all spelt correctly, and the pictures and formatting are neat.

Your wiki skills may not be up to creating a DHPD style page, but anyone can see how much better The Malton Zookeepers page appears compared to the likes of Malton Zombie Free Radio.

If you want to be taken seriously, (or at least mocked on a regular basis) keep your wiki page current. Don't wait 6 months and then try updating it all at once, the odd weekly update can work wonders. Reply to messages on your talk page promptly. Remember, if you add it to your watchlist, you should get an email notifying you about messages. Not a lot of effort really.

Hook

( Suffers horrible Robin Williams Popeye flashback ) Remember there are hundreds of groups out there. If you want to be noticed or attract new recruits you need to be different. Groups like 404 help reclaim Ghost Towns and try to appeal to the more hardcore survivors. SFHNAS is another group with a special reason for existing. As its founder explains:

Billy Forks said:
"So there I was, lurching along minding my own business, when I was headshot twice in the street and then CRed within 24 hrs. Still (then) being deluded and dual-natured, I went into the nearest building - which happened to be St. F's - and offered some advice on the AP-effectiveness of killing zombies in the street. My arguments were met with cries of 'zombie propagandist' and a few whacks with an axe. Tempers rose. My cold, unbeating heart darkened towards the foolish, cowardly breathers. There was an incident involving a generator. Since then, I've stood - or often lain - outside and spent my daily AP attacking the barricades. The hospital is usually at VSB++, so I sometimes get in and manage to groan and then infect a few people, but more helping claws are always welcome." ''That was the start. The idea caught on, maybe not with many, but with a tight group of fierce and obsessive zombies. The Kempsterbank survivor groups know us and have felt our teeth and claws. Our esteemed enemies have described us as 'tenacious as hell', 'intelligent' and 'a huge laugh'.''

A coherent reason for existing helps others Identify with your group.

Final Thoughts

Finally. Good Luck. Contact other groups and look at their wiki pages. This guide contains several groups with excellent wiki pages you could copy features from.

Alternatively ask a Sysop or two. They should be maintaining the place and can probably point you in the direction of a few useful help pages or willing page designers.

The appearance of your group page reflects on the quality of your group. Remember that when you create it.
