User:Toejam/The best things about the wiki

From The Urban Dead Wiki

These are the things I find are best about the wiki. It's a very subjective list.

  • There's always something going on. Whether it's policy discussion or suggestions or deletion votes, it seems there's always something new happening to involve yourself with.
  • The wiki is a window into social dynamics. Here, virtually everything people do and say is recorded and open. If it interests you, it's much easier to observe how a group functions here than it would be in the outside world.
  • Suggestions. Suggestions are a big part of what drew me into the wiki. They're a totally different sort of entertainment from the game, very creative, and they compliment the game. Still, my apathy is slowly pulling me away from there.
  • Good faith rule system. Basically this allows me to edit as I see fit without having to worry about rules getting in the way, and as well as feeling more fair, it's a much less stressful environment if you know you won't be punished as long as your intentions are good.
  • Comprehensiveness of information. The wiki is absolutely the premier source of information about urban dead. Pretty much everything I want to know about the game can be found here. The last frontier in this is search odds, and much credit goes to those still chipping away at that task.
  • The people. There's people here I'd have a lot of respect for. Whether it's through staying polite, even when attacked (jedaz and others), a gentle friendly nature, warm communications and sense of humour (in particular, the people connected with the Asylum page) or quiet wiki gnome work (lots of people) there's quite a few people I'm glad I've been in the company of. (The people are also one of the worst things. That's life.)
  • Learning to wiki. This is the first wiki I've contributed to, and now I have first-hand experience of doing it, and I know what the jargon means and how to use the wiki-syntax and so forth.
  • Being able to contribute.
