Suburb Template and NecroWatch

Hello again Boxy. Sorry for turning your Talk page into a free-for-all discussion (below), as that was not my intent. As such, I have started this new topic just to clarify your recent suggestion. To confirm, you are suggesting that I edit the Template:Suburb to include a link to NecroWatch (to the relevant suburb section) among the other links (i.e. iWitness, ect)? --Mobius187 19:59, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

I'm not sure how you've set up your necrowatch system, but a link similar to those at the bottom of the suburb template, linking to where people can go to update the suburbs necrowatch page/s would be appropriate I would think. Does each suburb have a "NecroWatch/Dulston" (or similar) page? -- boxy talki 00:35 31 December 2007 (BST)
NecroWatch follows a standard similar to the one already used by building status (NIC). The NecroWatch site acts as a central repository for all of the NT NecroWatch templates, while each individual NT location wikipage supports its own individual template (display only). The template information is stored as sub-pages of NTStatus, one for every NT wikipage location. It's this sub-page that the user updates and the changes are then displayed on the previously mentioned wikipages. The only potential I would see for including NecroWatch on a suburb wikipage would be as a link to the NecroWatch section pertaining to the NT facilities/scans for that suburb (something like this: Dulston). Obviously if a suburb had no such facilities no link would be required. What do you think? --Mobius187 02:10, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
Well that system wont work on the suburb template, I'm afraid, unless you make a redirect page for each suburb to point to your Dulston|link and then point to that. And then you may as well just create a necrowatch page for each suburb, I guess -- boxy talki 08:41 31 December 2007 (BST)
On the problem of how to direct the links, based on the fact that we would be using a single template (i.e. Template:Suburb), I have a solution that would work. How about we simply incorporate a variable into the Suburb template to support directing the sub-page (i.e. A_to_D) that I can then set for each suburb individually and as for the anchored link (i.e. #Dulston) we could use the PAGENAME utility template? Or more specifically, the Suburb template would include wikicode like this: A_to_D}}}#PAGENAME|NecroWatch. Then all I would need to do is set the SubPage value for every suburb wikipage. --Mobius187 15:55, 31 December 2007 (UTC)
That would probably work... I'll leave it up to you, it's your project after all -- boxy talki 23:49 1 January 2008 (BST)

Animated GIFs and Sysop-dom

First, the major topic. It would appear that Grim is cleaning house in the Sysop list, which is a noble effort as I like to do something similar with my efforts on managing group member lists. No point including someone who isn't around, or contributing. I gave it some thought and if he is set on this course of action I think it would be in our mutual best interests for me to step down as a Sysop. That allows him to better manage the Sysop list (i.e. only listing those who really are there to perform those duties) and I get back to what I do best, non-Sysop work on the UD Wiki. My only real complaint was the implication that I was just being lazy, when in fact I never agreed to do anything more than I currently was doing. So, yeah. It was fun, sort of, but I'll step down to resolve this issue. So I suppose my question is, what do I need to do in order to do that? --Mobius187 00:43, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

Grim isn't cleaning house of inactive sysops, he's argued against all formal policy so far aimed at that. He's just seems to want you out. If you don't want the hassle, then ask for demotion, or if you want to see if the community still supports you keeping your sysop status (they are the ones you're serving, not Grim, not me), put yourself up for reevaluation (if you can handle frank criticism). I don't know if I'd support your reevaluation, but as far as I'm concerned you're doing no harm with your sysops powers, even if they arn't fully utilised. At least what you do clean up of your own doesn't need to be handled by the rest of us -- boxy talki 06:28 30 December 2007 (BST)
Hmmm. Well even if Grim's motives are speculative, the fact remains that I don't often use any of my Sysop-granted powers and I certainly don't perform Sysop duties. So on the one hand I don't want to step down if the only reason is because Grim has got a bug in bonnet over something I did (again, he specifically didn't ask me to step down, rather he requested I just do the Sysop work), while on the other hand he does make a valid point, I don't plan on performing Sysop duties beyond those that I have already performed. I suppose I could wait and see whether Grim is still serious about his request. If he pursues an answer from me then I'll know I need to provide him with one. I think what I find the most interesting is that I was originally voted in even after I stated that I would only be acting as a Sysop in a limited capacity, and maybe even leaving the UD Wiki (back then). So in that regard everyone who voted in favor of me knew what to expect, as my goals are strictly aimed towards improving the UD Wiki through clean-up and wiki projects rather than administrative duties. --Mobius187 17:20, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
Im not sure if i should laugh at the absurdity of your ideas or cry that you are dumb enough (And more importantly, paranoid enough) to leap to that ludicrous conclusion. As i have said, i would much rather you took up the torch of responsibility, but if you dont want to do the job then you shouldnt have the power. Its plain simple. Saying that you got voted in means nothing. Its patently obvious from the promotions candudacies of late that people will vouch for anyone who posts even a moderate amount and doesnt tick them off. Things such as suitability nearly never come into play. Besides, its not a vote, and having read your promotions bid and seen everything there, i can pretty much say your promotion was a mistake, in light of your comments that you probably wouldnt be around. To be honest, i think your persecution complex of late has been brought on by the fact i submitted you to A/VB for spamming. That has nothing to do with you being a sysop, and everything to do with you spamming. --The Grimch U! E! WAT! 18:42, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
I think I should begin by asking, which idea you are referring to as absurd? I can also assure you that I am in full control of my mental faculties and am not in any way paranoid as you have implied. I think if you will carefully review what I wrote you will see that I simply stated the facts as I know them and speculated two possible outcomes based on that information. I admit what little information I have of your personality is biased by those I have spoken to, of which some hold unfavorable opinions of your methods. Perhaps that was wrong of me as I usually try to be agreeable with everyone I work with. If anything I am all about self-improvement, so I will cast aside those potential misconceptions about you and start with a clean slate. I should also point out that I was completely unaware of the recent "spam" allegations made against me, and I can only assume that you believed my comments were in some way rooted to that complaint (which they were not). Thus, we can conclude that I do not a persecution complex because in no way do I feel persecuted. Maybe a little pressured, but just a little. Certainly nothing really worthy complaining about. --Mobius187 19:33, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

Next topic, and one slightly less important, how much leeway do you grant to animated GIFs in terms of the recommended maximum image file size (i.e. 150KB)? In my opinion the file size limit is in place to prevent huge image files or such that take forever to load and thus slow-down the load rate for the Wiki. Right? In the case animated GIF files the GIF can load similar to streamed video, with the key factor being how long it takes to load a single frame. In this case I have an animated file with 50 frames, each 10-13KB each (125x100px, meant for a template). In total that's a file size of 550+KB, but the animated GIF will start up based on the load times of the individual images, or a few each second or so until it gets up to full speed having loaded all of them, but at no time are users left staring at nothing. I have tried to lessen the number of images, but as the animated GIF is not a sequence, but rather a series of random images associated with my topic, reducing their number lessens the original purpose. I can show you by uploading the 50-frame animated GIF to the Wiki, and you could delete it should you find it unacceptable, but I wanted to check with you first before doing anything along those lines. --Mobius187 00:43, 30 December 2007 (UTC)

I don't make wiki policy, and I don't know of any in regards to image size (other than the suggestion on the upload page). Wiki Questions would probably be the best place to ask. I will say, that having a relatively slow connection, images like Image:Demlogo.gif are a pain in the arse to load. Even if the first frame comes up quickly, images further down the page often don't come up until it's totally loaded. I wouldn't like to see images of that size used on many pages -- boxy talki 06:28 30 December 2007 (BST)
I'll redirect my question there. I agree though, Image:Demlogo.gif did take longer than I would have wished to load. I downloaded the file and confirmed it's 30 frames, of which a majority are 450x199px in size. I'm hoping though that while my animated GIF would have more frames, their scale (125x100px) will improve the download rate. Still, I'll see what everyone else thinks first. --Mobius187 17:20, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
It seems like It would be kinda hard to judge without seeing a completed version of the Gif.--Karekmaps?! 17:37, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
I actually have a completed version of the animated GIF, but I'm curious as to how I should display it online so that it could be judged. As I mentioned before I'm reluctant to upload it to the UD Wiki because it exceeds the posted file size limit (150 vs 550+ KB). --Mobius187 19:33, 30 December 2007 (UTC)
You can either upload it here (and put it up for deletion later if found to be inappropriate) or use imageshack.us to host it (you don't need to register) -- boxy talki 00:37 31 December 2007 (BST)

Nowiki template

Trying to make a template at Template:Nowiki, to make it easier to nowiki stuff.  Nalikill  TALK  E!  W!  M!  USAI  20:44, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

It won't work, Nowiki, Includeonly, and Noinclude have an insane number of problems working together, it's pretty much impossible to build a Nowiki template, not to mention it will nowiki the variable so the included will be {}, the variable can't be assigned.--Karekmaps?! 23:45, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

Categorisation

Heh. Lesson learned. I find the three most common are Category:Group Images, Category:Page Elements, and Category:Character Images, so I generally copy/paste those, and remove the ones innaplicable.  Nalikill  TALK  E!  W!  M!  USAI  23:53, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

You split them up into the sub categories of those larger categories. Zombie characters, survivor character for example, instead of just character images. This category tree may give you an idea of the layout. I know it's easier to just lump them all together in broad categories, but it's not very helpful for finding the images you want later (which is the reason for categorisation -- boxy talki 23:58 19 December 2007 (BST)

Image:Spooky_ShartakAd.jpg. I have no idea where this would fall under. It's not of Urban Dead, not in a template and not a page element (or is it)? --  AHLGTG 00:01, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

I've been sticking any tricky ones in the unsorted images category. Probably end up in page elements that one, I guess. Anyway, send them to unsorted, and we'll probably end up creating other categories if there are enough of a group to lump together -- boxy talki 00:04 20 December 2007 (BST)

Formatting question

Hello Boxy, I was referred to you by Nalikill, on the #udwiki IRC. I'm trying to figure out how to make an image link to another page, not just the image. <a href='whatever.html'><img src='whatver.jpg'></a> would work for HTML, but I can't find an equivalent here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thnx. JokimotoM.E.R.C.Y. EDU T 05:48, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

The only way I've seen it done is to first edit the page where you're going to upload the image (eg Image:Whatever.jpg), and make it a redirect to the page you want to link to, and then upload the image to that location. Then whenever anyone clicks on that image on any page it redirects to the page you nominated -- boxy talki 05:57 14 December 2007 (BST)
Thanks a lot for such a quick reply. Will do. JokimotoM.E.R.C.Y. EDU T 16:55, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Question

Is there any way to tell how many times a template is used, and/or where? I know you can tell by clicking on the picture(s) and see where it links, but if there isn't one.... just curious. --  AHLGTG 05:45, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Yeah sure, go to the template page, and hit "what links here". The inclusions are listed seperately to those that just link to the page -- boxy talki 07:02 12 December 2007 (BST)
Of course it's that easy... hurrr. Thankee. --  AHLGTG 19:32, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Image Categorization Project

For stuff like Image:01mc.jpg, do we really have to put them up for deletion? If so, should be have an unused image category as well? Thanks -Ryiis 10:20, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Well, it's not mandatory, but they are in danger of being deleted as soon as a sysops, with the will to go through the unused images, finds them. In fact if I like images I find, I put them in my image archive, to save them -- boxytalk • 10:28 2 December 2007 (BST)

Policy I'm Working On (Not Spam This Time.)

Is this already in place, or does it still need to be put through? My policy: One of the most basic newbie mistakes is to create a userpage under YourName rather than User:YourName. This can be incredibly frustrating to wiki users that try to find if that person has a userpage, and can confuse the person when they are welcomed on their User Talk:YourName page, not to mention if they vandalize- accidentally or not- and they need to be warned or banned. This is a problem that needs to be minimized as much as is possible, and so sysops need the power to merge these pages on sight, rather than having to go through other approval. Can you help me expand it, and fill it out if it isn't already in place and tell me if it is?  Nalikill  TALK  E!  W!  M!  USAI  00:11, 12 October 2007 (BST)

SysOps already move user pages created in the main namespace to the user namespace when they see them, or are asked to in the move administration page. No one ever got warned for this minor issue in the wiki. So, there is no need for a policy about this. --People's Commissar Hagnat [cloned] [mod] 02:12, 12 October 2007 (BST)
This isn't really needed, as such pages are covered by speedydelete criterion 9, so we move and get rid of them already, and it doesn't cause any drama the way it is. I only try to change policy when the way things are done is causing too much trouble -- boxytalk • 14:02 12 October 2007 (BST)

New Template

. Maybe you could add that to the VB page to assist with proper formatting of reports?  Nalikill  TALK  E!  W!  M!  USAI  02:11, 1 October 2007 (BST)

Interesting template. However in it's current state I don't see it being used or advertised on A/VB. The key things to note are:
 • It links to Darkmagic's userpage
 • It requires two edits to use (one to subst in the template and one to change the username), you should learn about variables to avoid this.
I don't think this is very useful though because it adds un-nessacary complications to the process of making a report. - If Jedaz = 09:24, 1 October 2007 (BST) then pi = 2 + 1
I agree with Jedaz, brings more complication into the page than is needed. It's a pretty simple task for people to report vandals, as long as we get the right name we can soon fix up their report anyway. It could be a useful template for experienced users, if you work out the variables thing -- boxytalk • 10:44 1 October 2007 (BST)

Nevermind, I think I got it. Thanks anyway. --8 Bucks 22:50, 15 August 2007 (BST)

Question

Can you check my User Page? I have got some problems with templates there. The "Here's the key" template is jumping of all other templates. How is that possible? Can you help? --  Savant  Chit-Chat  09:36, 14 August 2007 (BST)

The problem is in the margin: 0 2em 0 2em; part. Try taking it out (or modifying it) The preceding signed comment was added by boxy (talkcontribs) at 09:46 14 August 2007 (BST)
Thanks! ooopsss... Doesn't work :( Any else suggestion?Never mind... I done it someway... It seems. I have that on the template, and on the page (untemplated) and the only thing that I was touching was the template itself, not the template on the page. --  Savant  Chit-Chat  10:04, 14 August 2007 (BST)

Code

Could you give me the raw code of your sig on my talk page? Thanks. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 04:19, 25 August 2007 (BST)

Sig

Your new sig is quite nice but it only displays day of the week not day of the month. That might create some confusion as all days are used four times in the month. worth looking into?-- Vista  +1  23:17, 30 July 2007 (BST)

Thanks, some idiot used LOCALDAY instead of LOCALDATE. Now I've just gotta remember to sign with ~~~ rather than ~~~~ :) The preceding signed comment was added by boxy (talkcontribs) at 01:59 31 July 2007 (BST)

Wha? I only just got that all those "unsigned" posts are infact your new sig. That's even more subversive that Swiers' "." sig he was using for a while. 'arm. 04:17, 31 July 2007 (BST)

The first few fooled me as well. But then I figured that no way Boxy would make that mistake that many times and I actually start reading the sig. sneaky devil.-- Vista  +1  15:17, 31 July 2007 (BST)

I am at one with teh newbs >:) (BTW, the thought occurred to me while reading some of your attempts to get n00bs to sign, arm) The preceding signed comment was added by boxy (talkcontribs) at 03:52 1 August 2007 (BST)

I try, I try. Mixed success I think. That massive welcomenewbie template is too large, and the text too small. It should give more of just the absolute basics. Like *only* how to sign and how to indent replies properly. 'arm. 09:45, 1 August 2007 (BST)

Unsigned

Sorry. I've been using unsigned all day, but it that case he put a comment with a sig, then deleted it when he had second thoughts and voted keep. But then forgot his sig. But yes, no more adding sigs for people. I tend to add unsigned and if they are new put something on their talk page reminding them how to sign. But everyone forgets now and again. A wiki question

I was looking about the wiki for a page that included "Celebrity Sightings". You know, people could post up things like, "I was fortunate enough to be eaten by the Zombie Keith Moon!" with a link to the profile of the celebrity. Any idea if one exists, and if not, what would I need to do to get one started? --8 Bucks 19:42, 25 July 2007 (BST)

You may be looking for Malton Celebrities. It's not a group as such, I don't think -- boxy T Nuts block it! DA 23:23, 25 July 2007 (BST)

G. Delarue

It's a description of George Relarue whoever that is(page name might be a misspelling). Anyway it describes where he was born and certain points of his career as general and such(basically a character history of why he's in Malton). It's basically a character description but might be a person description, only problems with that are it sets the date he came to Malton as March 2007 and also said he has returned. Then again my French isn't what it used to be. Hope that helps.--Karekmaps?! 03:58, 23 July 2007 (BST)

Defining NPOV

I was going over old talk pages and such and noticed that you were interested in building a real and applicable description for NPOV for the Urban Dead wiki, when I checked I saw it still has never been done. The wikipedia description of NPOV has many major short coming when applied here and there are plenty of flaws with applying it and I think defining NPOV for Urban Dead is a necessary thing that could settle a lot of disputes. It is also something I've been looking for a way to try to do and get a consensus from users on for quite a while. So, that being said I would like to talk with you about setting up a definition for NPOV for the wiki through discussion of POV issues and such to see if we, and other users in the community, can come to a definitive conclusion on what can and can't be allowed(such as we all know that original research must be allowed but what about requiring proof, etc.). I'm sure we could discuss it on talk pages but mabey it would be best if we did it on the NPOV page talk page so everyone could participate and announce it as wiki news.--karek 23:35, 7 July 2007 (BST)

Well, I've started the talk page, let's see where this goes -- boxy T Nuts2U DA 01:07, 8 July 2007 (BST)

erroneous "article"

Somehow, this user talk page is included as an article at the bottom of Category:Current_Suggestions. And because I'm not fully sure how those those inclusions work, I can't work out why. Is it my fault for putting "Suggestion:Lie Down" as a link on his talk page? 'arm. 00:44, 8 July 2007 (BST)

You put a link to the current suggestions page in, but being a category page, it includes the page instead of creating a link unless you put a : before Category. Example here -- boxy T Nuts2U DA 00:48, 8 July 2007 (BST)
And I did it above too! No wonder I never see where I've gone wrong - it literally disappears! Anyway, cheers, and I'll keep trying to remember this for the future :). 'arm. 00:56, 8 July 2007 (BST)
It's the same with images, if you want to put a link to the image, rather than include it on the page, use :Image:Dupe.jpg -- boxy T Nuts2U DA 01:02, 8 July 2007 (BST)

Help with images

Hi, I was wondering if it is possible to control the height of images, so far I only know how to control the width (by adding --px as part of the image link) but can't find any reference to controlling the height. And it would be nice to be able to do so, for editing the recruitment page as sometimes the images are too large. Thanks in advance. - Whitehouse 19:02, 1 July 2007 (BST)

I believe it's possible to set the maximum height by putting in 10px x 10px instead of 10px. The image should keep it's ratio of width to height, but be limited to either the max width or height (whichever hits the limit first) you specify. Example below -- boxy T Nuts2U DA 09:06, 2 July 2007 (BST)
Dupe.jpg 100px x 30px Dupe.jpg

Thanks for the help. - Whitehouse 17:10, 2 July 2007 (BST)

A friendly advice

Please use the preview button (next to the "save page" button when editing) before saving, to ensure the changes you are making are going to work as expected. This saves you from creating multiple minor changes that "spam" the recent changes page for other users. --~~~~

It's what I truly hate about templates... previews just don't work. Ironic eh! Any ideas about how to get a template to automatically sign for you? I don't like how it formats a sig when you type in Template ~~~~. It forces the signature onto a new line, rather than straight after the text -- boxy T L ZS Nuts2U DA 11:08, 6 April 2007 (BST)

Renaming Sub-Group Wikipages

I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but I cannot appear to rename a sub-group wikipage within the Category tag. For example, say I have the page Dead vs Blue/Members. Now say I wanted to put a category tag in their to group it with the other Dead vs Blue sub-pages (i.e. ). Now in that category page it will appear as Dead vs Blue/Members, even if on the wikipage I placed the tag as: . This is in contrast to how users can apparently edit how a location wikipage is categorized, namely by remove "The" from its title in order to properly alphabeticize it in the list. --Mobius187 April 10 2007, 8:51 AM

I'm not sure I know what you mean there. I tried it out on the members page, and by adding it separated that page out into the M's part of the category, although it didn't "rename" the page there (but I don't think it ever did that, even for locations pages). Is that what you wanted, or something more? -- boxy T L ZS Nuts2U DA 00:54, 11 April 2007 (BST)

Na, still procrastinating about that (other stuff to do). Still think it would be a good idea, but maybe not the actual "welcomenewbies" on. Maybe one with the absolute bare bones...
 • This is the page for telling people about you and your characters --> link
 • This is your talk page where people can leave you messages --> link
 • sign
