Wiki Question

Me and a friend wish to start a chop in an auto repair. I have seen on the wiki that others have done that and named it after them self and edited the page. We wish to do that too. Please tell me if and how I can do that.

Kindly regards // Michael Sleeman, 19:52, 17 April 2009

If you want to make a group or a page, all you have to do is type what name you want into the 'search' bar on your left. So if I want to make a group called "The Happy Dancers" I would type that into the search bar and click 'go'. Once it tells you the page doesn't exist, you click on 'create page' and from there onwards you can make and edit the page under that name. I hope that answers your question... If not, just say so. You can actually re-create it if that is the case. We thought it may have been a mistaken dangerreport page. Status Signess

I just realized that your current signature is set up in two templates. Sig then Status. Might it not be better to fold the status into your sig template? That way if you ever want to drop the status thing you will be able to easily? Right now you'd have to edit all your recent signings in order to remove it...that seems extraneous. Gets worse if you keep editing though, hence my presense. -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 22:49, 20 April 2009 (BST)

There are two things: I've tested with just keeping the status page blank, which seems to work so when there comes a day when I don't want this status thing, I can just blank the page and add a noinclude to tell them hands off... And if I were to throw it all into one template, well, then one months worth of old posts will have two statuses next to my name. I guess I'll just make an alternate status page, put the code into my signature and blank the old one. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 00:33, 21 April 2009 (BST)
Well, you could trace all the inclusions of the current one and remove them, though it would indeed be a sizeable bit of work. I'm not saying blanking the template isn't an option, it just seems a bit meh to have a template with tons of calls of blank. I'm just being pedantic, no need to actually listen to my nonsense if you don't fancy. :) -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 13:49, 22 April 2009 (BST)
It's okay, just take some deep breaths... I might just do that sometime in the future when I find the time, but for now I have turned the original status page into a visual copy to a new substitute, which will hopefully eliminate duplicates in the signatures. Editing a certain building information.

Hi. I wish to editing an auto repair information on this wiki. I have spoked with the group that had write on it before and they gave me they permission to rewrite. I have also spooked with one of the largest grope in the suburb and they have no problem with me changing it.

I wish to make it an personal text based on my character and a friends character work on it now, as well as some history before and after the outbreak. What do you say? Can you give me some nice advise. :)

Thank you.

--Michael Sleeman 18:54, 21 April 2009 (BST)

Well, what is the auto shop that you want to use? Once you find it, you can always write a short history on the page to add some flavour to the place. My only tip is try to make is as neutral as possible, because some people around here don't like it if it's a point of view article. Once you have a massive history to put on, you can always make a group and put it on your group page. You can write anything you want on there! Hope that helps. If not, just tell me the auto repair that you would like to use and I'll try and help you more. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 03:50, 22 April 2009 (BST)Well the place ::I wish to write about is "Jefferys Auto Repair" in Darkerstown. There is a short notice that I have write on a page about all the Auto Repairs in Darkerstown. I wish to make a single page for "Jefferys Auto Repair". Please help me to do that. I Don't know if I should take it away from the old page or how to do what. Kindly regards. --Michael Sleeman 16:07, 23 April 2009 (BST)
Well I'm already in a group. The Communist Party of Malton. The thing is, I wish to settle down and make my self a home. Hi. There is a problem to go from Jeffries Auto Repair to Freeth Auto Repair in the wiki. If I click on Freeth when I stand of Jeffries I come to Jeffries again. Well also say what you think about what I have write this far. Is this enough objective? I think I can make it personal because my character live there now and a lot of things will be write from his perspective. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Michael Sleeman (talkcontribs) 09:30, 24 April 2009.

Wiki Help

Hey DDR! I really appreciate the signature help offer. I have struggled with it, but I think I've got it to where I'm okay with it. I will definitely ask you for other wiki help though, and here is my first question. If we (or anyone else) are talking about something, do we just go back and forth posting on each others talk page? Or do we "re" each other on the same page, so it stays in one place? Looking above, it appears that we keep the conversation together, do I just keep checking back?--Winton 16:11, 25 April 2009 (BST)

Well, (this is the part you probably won't like) it goes either way. Some users will reply onto your talk page, whilst others will reply on theirs. You'll have to check your watchlist to find out who does what, and to make sure you don't miss a reply to a topic you've written on someone's talk page. It's annoying, but you get used to it eventually. You can probably tell by my talk page that I reply to comments on my own talk (it's better for archival purposes), but when I'm talking to newer users I like to reply to them directly on their talk page because its easier for them, I remember missing a lot of replies from that when I was new myself.
I usually copy and paste conversations onto my talk page regardless of where they happen though, it's easier for others to keep track of them. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 16:19, 25 April 2009 (BST)
I understand that. So if I flag the "watch" button on the top of your page, I'll get an alert that it has been modified? Possibly, but not necessarily to me, but I could then check this page?--Winton 16:26, 25 April 2009 (BST)
Yeah, absolutely. In preferences you can set the option to watch all pages you edit, I do it, it makes it very conveniant. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 16:43, 25 April 2009 (BST)
Thanks! --Winton 21:14, 25 April 2009 (BST)

Where can I learn the wiki's "language"?

Hello, DanceDanceRevolution

Many thanks first of all for leaving the welcome message in my Talk page and for your kind invitation to annoy you :-) with any question I may have.

As a matter of fact, my biggest hinderance when working with the wiki is that I have no clue at all of the "language" used there (like : for indenting and the like). I learn by clicking on "edit" in other pages and guessing what each thing does. Although it works for a few small things, it is not the best way and I am always terribly afraid of accidentally changing something. I also do not know how to load new images, templates and the like and link them to a current page.

So... the question basically is, is there a place where I can read about all that (I couldn't find any but maybe I looked for the wrong keywords), or is a Mentor the quickest way?

Thanks a lot again and all the best in Malton! --Aureus 13:16, 6 May 2009 (BST)Aureus

DDR's currently banned (not in a bad "ZOMG HE'S SUCH A VANDAL!!!!" - he asked for it so he wouldn't get distracted while doing important things,) but I'll point you to a few help pages.
Of course, there's the wiki's own help section - but it's a tad incomplete in some parts, and not all that great. Wikipedia's cheetsheet is probably your best bet if you need a piece of code, that's your place. The Wikipedia help sections might be good if you need to go more in-depth (although you don't really have to unless you're planning on doing some more hard-core editing.
If you've got any more questions, ask me or DDR here (he'll be automatically unbanned in a few days.) Linkthewindow Talk 13:24, 6 May 2009 (BST)

Lariat2301 Status reports

[Copied from User_talk:Lariat2301] ...
You are being way too diligent. I understand if you want to make a note of things that are overbarricaded, but if something is underbarricaded, perhaps instead of scouting relentlessly, you could cade it yourself. Keep in mind that not all players go onto this wiki, and most that do don't listen to the barricade plans anyway, because most of them are out of date. I would also suggest only noting overbarricaded buildings, and then putting it on the news section for the suburb. Casual users rarely read individual location pages, so your notes may actually get read that way. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 09:42, 15 May 2009 (BST)

Well, if I'm going to update current status, it pays to be complete. I don't want to simply edit those sites that are overbarricaded, since the lack of updated info on the others might be misinterpreted. and if I'm going to update, I might as well note which sites could use stronger barricades. And I can't cade it myself yet, since I haven't earned enough credits to get construction. Yeah, once I've got the experience I'd rather barricade than just complain. But most site's reports are really out of date, so getting updates in also helps while I wander around looking for head-bashing opportunities... --Lariat2301 09:49, 15 May 2009 (BST)
I know what you mean, but individual locations are rarely viewed by the masses, so I still suggest you report your findings in one big block on the news section of each suburb. That way, the information will be cycled once it's out of date, and more people will see it. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 10:19, 15 May 2009 (BST)

Thank you I can do with all the advice I can gather, your name sounds familiar something to do with Red Rum possibly? I copied Aphelions page to give me an idea of the general setup. AS far as the Rabit Hole goes I doubt anyone else in the DHPD even know about it since it dates back to 2006 and was part of a Massive arby's case that ended up getting Maxwell Hammer/Reetoric permabans. Should I be catagorizing my own pics? If so, how do I do it?--—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Bonghit420 (talkcontribs) 01:50, 23 June 2009.

You don't need to because there'll always be someone around to do it for you, but if you'd like to do it yourself, you just follow that box on Category:Images. So, group images go into Category:Group Images, Screenshots in Category:Screenshots, and so on. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 03:25, 23 June 2009 (BST)

About the spaz attack at A/MR. Big internal changes. We need a new wiki editor. Is it possible to edit so much you want to barf? --Haliman - Talk 06:05, 27 June 2009 (BST)

The images that just won't die.

On one of your pages somewhere you keep a small history of those three images that refuse to be removed from the lists despite being deleted. Well on Special:Unusedimages all three obviously show up (near the top), but better yet all three original files are on there and still recoverable. Mayhaps reuploading those original files, triggering a few updates in the job queue then nuking the images will do the job? Dunno, just thinking aloud here. -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 21:01, 29 June 2009 (BST)

We have tried uploading the original files, and according to the revision history, Karek tried restoring a revision back in 2008, and by the looks of it, it didn't work :( I was always interested in just uploading my own images over it, but Link already tried that and apparently it doesn't work either. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 01:44, 30 June 2009 (BST)
Wait, what did you mean by updating the 'job queue'? DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 11:56, 1 July 2009 (BST)
Wait a second, I've found out why they don't die, at leased. Check the actual code of the images, [3],[4] and [5]. For some reason, there are extra codes on the filenames, eg. %E2%80%8EPDA_Badge.jpg, which ties these images in the same group as the pages that similarly won't die ([eg. 7th Fallschirmjger Div.) Now, if we find a way to de-code the sections (%E2%80%8E), upload an image with those symbols, then maybe it would upload it over what the Wiki thinks the images are? I got some help via #batshit, they led me here, but only the first character is à but the others are undefined. DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 12:26, 1 July 2009 (BST)
...It's the hex code for "0xE2 0x80 0x8E (e2808e)". More info at [6] and [7]. Moonshine and Zbahnz tell me it may mean the uploader was from a country where the language is right-to-left and the code was automatically included into the upload? DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 12:32, 1 July 2009 (BST)
Agreed, after doing some investigation on php's function to encode URL's, it seems that is indeed the code for a left to right mark. The html code is ‎ so we can easily link to the right images.
Without Mark With Mark
PDA Badge Image:PDA_Badge.jpg Image:‎PDA_Badge.jpg
PDA Badge1 Image:PDA_Badge1.jpg Image:‎PDA_Badge1.jpg

The upload thing appears to lose the code in transition though, might need a bit more thinking before we get there yet... -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 16:32, 1 July 2009 (BST)

Uploaded the original PDA badge for another try. It appears as a separate listing on the unused files, so that's proof the the nicely named image which I uploaded is a different file from the crap one. All the old deletions are just deleting the nice file. The problem is all the links to the crap one are redirected by the wiki to the nice one. So some meddling around with the upload destination or some URL fiddling when deleting the image is in order. -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 17:20, 1 July 2009 (BST)

Just tried fiddling around with the URL when uploading: and then attempting to upload yields:

 • File name has been changed to "PDA_Badge.jpg".
 • A file with this name exists already, please check Image:PDA Badge.jpg if you are not sure if you want to change it.

So it removes the mark, and then of course the filename matches the nice one. How did the image ever make it in the first place if it removes the stupid code? -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 17:32, 1 July 2009 (BST)

... Maybe an older version of Wiki software didn't change the filename, then Kevan updated the software (after these images were uploaded), and the new software had a feature which did not allow this type of symbol use when uploading files? DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION (TALK | CONTRIBS) 03:41, 2 July 2009 (BST)
Probably, Bugzilla turns up lots of entries for inaccessible/undeletable stuff. They patched it but the devs had to manually run scripts to fix the pages that were already bad. So we're probably stuck with them. -- User:The Rooster RoosterDragon User talk:The Rooster 13:12, 2 July 2009 (BST)
