Automapping plugin

A user by the name Lexi set up modified automapping plug to work with Borehamwood and a way for me to recieve gathered info. You could have downloaded his firefox plug, but now the map is complete, so it was put down. Please uninstall it

Announcements

hi. would like to post some notes here, at the top.

  • The map page is split in 2 parts because of wiki page size limit. I can output the full page at my website, but i don't want this right now, better for it to be on wiki.
  • i have a script ready that parses out data that you need. i.e. you give me x_min, x_max, y_min, y_max and i give you a wikimap in these limits (though, only data that i have would be present). handy for your single region suburbs. i did all monroeville regions maps like this!
  • other than Lexi's data i only take iwitness because of few reasons, biggest of which are protection of errata/misstypings and reliability. however i might look at some big chunks people collected and add them if i would be sure in it.
  • for how can i help i'll quote Jen:
Jen said:
Learn how to use iwitness. Then find an area of the map that's not been documented, take an iwit record of every single step you take, and post them here, so Duke can update the map based on them. Alternatively, you can help with some stopgap maps by compiling and sticking together screenshots, but those are temporary, and will only be useful as long as there's not a centralized map.
  • here is modified iwitness bookmarklet that autocreates a public report with "Automatic Borehamwood Mapping" as the comment without user interaction
  • please, if you notice you're not far from blocks that are called on my map, like, "the [something]", such as "the Alley" - tell me how they are called now, as Kevan renamed them to my honour;
  • Extra thanks for Maunder, who kept a similair project to mine, but stalked for all public iwitness records, some of which i missed. I've imported them now.

Sincerely yours, --~~~~ [talk]

Current state of the map

Map is complete!

Congratulations Duke!!

To everyone that installed my FireFox addon: Thank you for helping contribute. However as it has now reached the end of it's useful life, I will be taking the reciever offline, which will most likely fill your console with errors. So to save my and your bandwith, please uninstall it!

Thanks, --Lexicality 09:34, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Interesting statistics: In the past month I received 20594 hits (858 a day) totaling 6.2MB of data!
That's a lot of text. --Lexicality 07:27, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Automapper not working?

I did some walking about last night and it's not up on the map... is that something you have to do manually, or did the tool stop working? - GeraldThompson 14:56, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Automapper doesn't submit info to wiki, i do this step manually --~~~~ [talk] 20:19, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
and i have to add, i usually do this only once per 24 hours :/ --~~~~ [talk] 20:55, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

links, were did they go?

it was getting crowded, so i moved parsed iwitness to an User talk:Duke Garland/BHW/archive --~~~~ [talk] 19:39, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

on the AP efficiency

Do you think that I could drop down an extra row each pass, and go down to row 5 after this? You'd see the bottom of this row as the top of row 5, and it would save me quite a bit of AP a day.GeraldThompson 02:03, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
done. right now you were travelling through 3rd line and all 4th line blocks were gettning recorder. next you can go to line 6 and blocks for lines 5-7 would be recorded. Anyway, i think best AP-wise scouting looks like this:

AP-efficient-scouting.gif

as it takes 1 ap to walk diagonally, but accomplishes more "distance" and 5 new blocks instead of 3 each turn. --~~~~ [talk] 11:56, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Mapping Procedures

I have been mapping locations in Elstree without screen shots by manually editing the map at the bottom of that page. I've noticed that there seem to be a few other mapping activities going on, some of which include what appear to be master maps and screen shots. I'm a bit confused about best practice, and I'm afraid that my work is either going to be overwritten or simply deemed unreliable. Can someone write up a quick primer on HOW to properly map for use newbies (what to record and WHERE) and link to it on the Borehamwood main page? Squideshi 18:58, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Your work is either going to be overwritten or simply deemed unreliable. Here's a quick notes on HOWTO for newbies: don't do anything. Really. You might think that i'm too harsh, but believe me, the mess from errors that newbies make is too large --~~~~ [talk] 19:09, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
You need to be real careful. Im currently sorting out a map of Northwest Borehamwood but I'm putting nothing in until its been confirmed by a secondary source, whether that's screenshots, the duke here, the guy who's got a giant excel table, screenshost or screencaptures. The best practice is to Iwitness it all, or take shots like other users have done. Bear in mind we still don't know what shape some of these maps should be! --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 19:18, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
I believe Duke's map is the closest thing to a documented, thorough, default map (well, or will be, once it's finished). So if you want to contribute to the effort that's not going to get overwritten or deemed unreliable, learn how to use iwitness. (And Duke won't update his map based on screenshots). --Jen 19:29, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Yep. Remember. whatever you do will be superceded by duke. The only reason im doing it is for short term navigation. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 19:39, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
I understand that this all applies to the big map being put together by Duke. Does it also apply to the smaller individual maps on the wiki page for each suburb? Squideshi 05:31, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
What Jen said. By the way best way to go scouting-wise is diagonally (you get 5 new blocks instead of 3 each turn). --~~~~ [talk] 19:45, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Unless duke can do a screengrab?--RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 19:42, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
i'll think about it, but i doubt i'll do it this week--~~~~ [talk] 19:45, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Also, keeping track of where the borders of suburbs are is a good thing. This is the one element that isn't covered by Duke's map, so compiling some sort of screenshot diagram is immensely useful when it comes to those. --Jen 19:55, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Haw Crescent Garage for example marks the Most Southern and Easterly Corners of Northwest Borehamwood at 543,32 --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 20:00, 30 October 2008 (UTC)
Its Westernmost border is at 524 (inclusive, apart from below line 25 when its border is 520 (inclusive) --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 20:06, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

~hi guys, erm someone definately putting false info out there (much more than just hiding the BB house) I finding references to places doubled or even tripled. Just thought I'd give ppl the heads up. :Alphastarre 10:12, 31 October 2008

There are quite a few repeated names (eg Cuningunde Hospital.) which are legitimately repeated on the map. I suspect this is what you've noticed, and not misinformation. --Zarneverfike 10:42, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
Alphastarre, if you want to point out incorrect information, point out incorrect information. coordinates, you know? i've got everything ready to investigate it. in the message above all you did was talk shit. And take in account what Zarneverfike said - location names aren't unique throughout the town. In Monroeville there are 2 hospitals with same name 10 blocks from eash other --~~~~ [talk] 15:34, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Well sorry if you took offence:-(. thought it was a valid question and still do. I sure my original post was a few lines longer:-S. I'll drop off any iwitness i get that might be useful as I get them; such as doubled named building as I on tour around the town at the moment. Be well:-) Alphastarre(Nov 9th @ 1616gmt)

Thanks

I'd just thought I'd say thanks Duke. You're bloody fantastic for doing this. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 21:01, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

Seconded. Shame you have been forced to remove the House from the map though - Shaft121 22:59, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
he was not forced... he was asked, and agreed to remove it on his own. --People's Commissar Hagnat talk 23:04, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
Semantics...or a misunderstanding from yourself. It can be seen that he would have posted it up without being asked. However, somebody with a different viewpoint decided to ask him not to. Fine, he agrees, but without that intervention, it would be posted. To me, that is being 'forced' although I concede that is a potentially volatile word. Regardless, kudos on the work so far! - Shaft121 23:18, 31 October 2008 (UTC)
You know, actually i'm not sure wether i would have posted or not without being asked. The situation was quite complex - i was having some tech difficulty that made process that was usually 1-stage become 2-stage because of data overload. And the issue of hiding arose in the middle of this "process upgrade". So i haven't even started to think what to do with them then. --~~~~ [talk] 23:50, 31 October 2008 (UTC)

A Few Minor Points

First, I have to echo the earlier posts thanking Duke for all the works he's done thus far. Its invaluable to have a complete, accurate map of the entire city. Anyway, there were just a couple things I noticed with the map. First, Garages seem to have a couple different colors. Some (eg. Bindon Avenue Garage [532,80]) have a unique color, while some others (eg. Darke Alley Garage [549-91]) are colored the same as streets. It is a minor point, but I figured I'd point it out, in case there is an easy fix. The second was that Montague Way Police Station [567,51] is also colored as a street instead of a PD.

Also, on an unrelated note, I was wondering if some sort of banner of templated message ought to be posted in each suburb page discouraging revealing the location of the big brother house. I know that some might be inclined to reveal its location on its suburb page, perhaps without realizing it has been discouraged. I know its not directly related to the map, but I figured since obscuring the bb house was brought up here, I'd rehash here. I guess what I'm wondering is, if there is now a concensus that obscuring the House's location is proper. --Zarneverfike 08:06, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

thanks, fixed. when parser saw "Hartley Street Garage" it thought this to be the street before. i've fixed this behavior few days ago but older locations were already marked wrongly. Ditto for Police Stations. I got these all now, but if you see more oddities with other locations type please do tell. As for hiding/revealing location of BB house - Hagnat wrote letter to Kevan, it would matter most what creator thinks on the subject --~~~~ [talk] 12:29, 2 November 2008 (UTC)
OK. Good to hear its fixed. I'll keep an eye out for any inconsistencies. I guess now that Kevan weighed in as not caring either way, and the subsequent cat being let out of the bag, disclosing the location doesn't quite matter much. Still, I think there ought to be some sort of spoiler warning on the main BHW page. I also don't think folks ought to be posting that info in their sigs across the wiki, but what can you do. --Zarneverfike 05:53, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Radlett 2 day trek to the BB house

I'll iWitness the blocks that aren't currently mapped, so it's going to be somewhat inconsistent, but I'm filling in blocks as I go.

Almost there already.GeraldThompson 03:01, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

change in coordinates?

I've been pretty inactive the past couple of days, and just got back to starting to map things. Just wondering -- iwitness seems to say that the coordinates of this place are 357-12. I'm pretty darn sure that's not correct...is anyone else getting weird numbers like this?

--Jen 18:28, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

it's some sort of iwitness bug. the true coordinates in this shot are 547-18 --~~~~ [talk] 20:11, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

done, though all of them already came from today's Lexi's data (i do those first). Was that you or someone else follows step-by step? :) --~~~~ [talk] 20:09, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
Looks like that was me. I installed the firefox plugin a while ago, but wasn't quite sure if I was doing it right. Looks like everything works fine now, which is great. I'm probably being a bit dense, but I'm still not sure if I have to take Iwit reports for it to work or not, though. --Zarneverfike 21:51, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
You don't have to take Iwit reports for it to work, though they would be useful, maybe just one in the end, to make me check that the data came through --~~~~ [talk] 22:15, 11 November 2008 (UTC)
