Monroeville Badges

Just so you know there are survivors (although very few) that are still roaming around in Monroeville. It would be nice if you could give some kind of emblematic badge of appreciation for the few that made it this far. I hope thats not asking too much, but for staying alive this long its quiet a feat to accomplish and deserves some kind of reward. --Evildiehard 02:53, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Monroeville Airlift

Hi Kevan, I am one of the few remaining survivors in Monroeville. With the Christmas update being implemented, I was curious to know if I set up a Christmas tree and some lights in a building for a few days, would a Helicopter come by and take my character to Malton? I don't want to do something in vain that could end up killing my character that has survived for ten months... --Evildiehard 06:18, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

hey Evildiehard, i'm The Last Unlucky Guy, we were in harvey's group together, i like that idea, can i get in on it too? Getting my character out of Monroeville would be great, i've grown too attached to him and if i got killed, especially after going solo, and survivng for this time, it would really suck :( --Three Dog 19:41, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

clothing suggestions

Hi, long time no see. I've got another question about clothing. I see that you haven't implemented any new clothing for almost a year and the pages in question are receiving little to no traffic. Are you still in need of new Clothing ideas Suggestions or can I close the page and move everything into their relevant archives?-- Vista  T  00:35, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Will donate for awesome clothing

Basically, I was just wondering that if I donated $50AU or something, that maybe you might code in some blood-proof clothing, just for moi? Iwitness typo

Got really bored, and noticed there was a typo.

"What does it mean if a record is PUBLIC or PRIVATE?

Public records are just that- anybody can (if they take the time to look) find them and look at the information they contain. Private records are hidden in directories whose contents are not open to the public view, and the random number string appended to the end of the file name makes it impossible for anybody to find them through luck or accident. "Private" records are in fact so hard to locate that if you don't record their location, you'll never them again. That's OK when you just want to share a quick secret with some friends in a private chat room or secure forum, though- just copy the link and paste it somewhere you and you friends can find it, but others will not see it! User accounts do provide a way to retrieve all of the private records a user creates while logged into that account, so while still quite private, they are not going to vanish. User accounts also potentially allow for other levels of security; all of these are essentially private records that only certain people can see, or which do not display all of the details of the record in order to protect the privacy and safety of "innocent bystanders".

Suicide Repair

Most of the time it isn't easy to let a building reach the higher levels of decay and takes the effort of multiply zombie players. Lately as more buildings reach higher level of decay we see a raise in suicide repairs. Where survivors just spent all their AP and more to repair a long time ruined building and prepare to get eaten and revived. If suicide repairing was not what you where going for with the implemention of decay, please consider changes like:

a)Make it impossible to spent more AP on repairing than are left to this character, and probably setting a cap at 45AP as a maximum for decay.

or b)Repair only removes some part of the decay level and not all at once. Probably like tearing down barricades. --Experiment211 21:15, 13 July 2008 (BST)

I second option B. Option A could be exploited by people who wait until they have 2 or 3 AP left before running in to repair for 1 or 2 AP. B makes a lot of sense, I think. --Drugsanimudongs 17:14, 15 November 2008 (UTC)
Errr... I read your suggestion wrong, Experiment211. Ignore my exploit theory! I still support B, though.

A Little Idea for Group Affiliations

I've had an idea and would like to submit it for your consideration. Would it be possible to add in the option of a URL link added to a player's group affiliation, a la the current system with the 'Real Name' links? This would be very useful for players looking to join a group and for groups looking to recruit players, especially zombie groups who lack the ability to spray-paint places without death-culting. Whilst the RN link is used by some, myself included, for recruitment, more likely than not the majority will simply not bother clicking it after the first few times they have done that on a profile have taken them to YouTube songs or Rick-rolls. A link under the group affiliation would draw more desirable attention.

There are two ways in which I could see this working: The first is to have the group affiliation act in the same way as the Real Life link, with the player choosing the URL; the second would be to have the GA act as the list of confirmed groups on the stats page does: An automatic link to the wiki page of said confirmed group. My personal belief is that the latter would be the superior option, so as to avoid abuse via unsavoury links which would undermine trust in the system (this is of course going under the assumption that you have a system which makes the links appear automatically on the stats page, rather than having to add them all in yourself of course).

Just my thought for the early morning.

Regards. --Papa Moloch 04:37, 4 August 2008 (BST)

FWIW, my personal version of 'ActOnProfile' already modifies the group name to be a link to the wiki page for that group. Its pretty handy, even if just to find out the group has no page. A fancier GM script could easily determine if the page actually exists, and not make it a link if it doesn't, which would be nice. Server side code could likely do the same thing better. Monroeville and headshot

All the high level survivors I know (about 30) have been holding out for the return of perma-death headshot with the quarantine. I see the quarantine is back, but everything still says that headshot is not permanent. Is this the case? If you're not bringing it back then you might as well close down the server or at least tell us officially. Because as currently constituted only one side can win, and though we could probably prolong things indefinitely I fail to see the point. --Babe's Ghost 03:59, 17 August 2008 (BST)

I couldn't agree more with this post. Staying alive as a member of an organized group in Monroeville is possible but it takes a large amount of coordination and effort. I fail to see the "game" part of current Monroeville on the survivor side, something permanent headshot would bring to the table. If balance is an issue, I'm sure the zombie side would love to have non-curable Infectious Bite. --Calem 10:09, 17 August 2008 (BST)
The evidence of the most recent opening of Monroeville suggests that it takes about 6 weeks for the city to go from totally survivor-dominated to totally destroyed with the survivors on the run and hiding in the wreckage. Therefore, it seems to me that the most fun and interesting way to do it would be to run Monroeville in cycles. Every five to six weeks or so switch the rules to give one side or the other the advantage. So, having now had an extened Zombie Friendly period of time, you allow the Survivors to have their turn for a month and a half with closed borders and "permanent" (until the next cycle) headshot. Then re-open it to new admissions with the usual "Zombies stand back up" rules for a month and a half, then close it again and so on and so forth. That way, both sides always have something to look forward to and there's always something to plan for. Frankly, this solution still favors the Zombies somewhat in that a dead Survivor still never gets a chance to come back to life, but its significantly more fair than the current situation where Survivors can never repair a building for more than a couple of days before getting buried under a tide of zombies. While that may accurately reflect the desperate conditions of the later Dead movies and some of the supporting fiction, its not much fun to be a Survivor under these circumstances, and this is a game. --jng2058 12:54, 17 August 2008 (BST)
Agreed. Right now Monroeville is only a game of attrition with an inevitable (tedious) end. Maybe that's in keeping with Romero's cannon, but it puts survivors in an unwinnable position and leaves the zombies without enough challenge to stave off boredom. If the game's going to be left open, then since zombies are in the advantage right now (by 4:1) why not restore headshot and see what happens? CoopVancer 21:34, 17 August 2008 (BST)
Actually Coop- if you think about it- zombie take over isn't necessary canon in the zombie/post-apoc genre nor Romero canon, but merely an outcome of the core theme. What destroys the humans isn't the zombies, which are fairly weak, but their failure to overcome their individual self interest and cooperate. Restoring headshot would work now consistent with the canon. Headshot is something survivors learn with experience. At present, most of the survivors, don't have the XP to have headshot.
So I guess this is down to a test of wills then? Of humanity? How long can humans survive before break down, succumb to anarchy, or make a mistake and get eaten? We will not. Survivors will not descend into madness. We will survive under these horrible conditions! We will be ever vigilant! (until an emergency comes up in real life, then we're pretty much zombie-food) Bystander 22:30, 20 August 2008 (BST)
Bystander, I recommend the buddy system. Give someone in your group your PW so they can move you in an emergency.--Babe's Ghost 00:01, 21 August 2008 (BST)
Yes, your reading is correct that perma-headshot isn't returning.--Kevan 16:59, 18 August 2008 (BST)

Will there be any type of reward for x number of survivors remaining?

I'm just going to say the only reason to ask this is because what the point of trying to survive if the hoard of zombies will eventually take over all? All i want to know is there anything that actually would give hope to the survivors?

Yeah, it would be nice if the last 100 survivors were transported to Malton with text like "NAME survived the second Monroeville quarantine." or "NAME was one of the last 100 to die in Monroeville." on their profile page. --BetterLuck 23:23, 18 August 2008 (BST)

Monroeville Characters

I was just wondering if you had any plans for allowing players to have their Monroeville character's account moved to Malton. It's based on chance - sorta hard to get solid evidence when it could just be called "bad luck". I mean... er...--Nallan (Talk) 14:53, 27 August 2008 (BST)
Aeon, I did "check for myself"... As in. I've experienced it numerous times in-game... Then I went to Brainstock, asked around for a second opinion, and got one... But that wasn't good enough for you people... So I decided to ask Kevan, himself -- especially since Nallan kind of has a point, and since it's not easy to find the conditions to conduct the experiment... If I recall correctly, at some point the game will be shut down. I mean shut down. At which point Kevan has said that any donations on MV alts will be transferable to Malton. He has hinted that he might allow MV alts to be moved to Malton once it's shut right down -- although I haven't noticed anything like this in a while, maybe he's changed his mind? I dunno... Donations are transferrable, and accounts aren't - it was always going to be one or the other, and donations seemed more appropriate. Profiles and diaries will be kept in perpetuity. Enough is enough

I know you don't want to deal with this kind of stuff... yeah yeah yeah... But please just look at this post. Just quickly...

Enough is enough, already. Please ban open proxies from accessing Urban Dead, because this is just too common -- and if anything is going to kill this game and the community it's zerging. There is a massive level of frustration over zerging, though honestly it's not brought up because people are fatalistic, figuring you're not going to do anything about it. But there are people willing and able to assist with the coding, with helping to set this up, you just need to say "Yes" to getting the ball rolling. Please consider it, consider something... Because it's a serious problem ((that is, the use of proxies). And, unfortunately -- unless there is something huge we are all missing -- it's a problem that your abuse detection algorithms just can't deal with... --WanYao 12:55, 31 August 2008 (BST)

Just to add... This guy in the post I linked to likely had his alts banned, and just kept making more and more to replace them... which, if true, shows that algorithm works against "normal" multi-abusers. But when you're dealing with proxies, you can completely circumvent those algorithms. And that's the problem... Active players usually encounter at least a couple obvious "zerg teams" every week... And a lot more less obvious but suspicious ones... It's very frustrating for those who try to play "by the book"... And while we generally just "shrug and bear it", still... I'm not going to bother you with this anymore now, but I really felt it was high time to bring this your attention, and to speak out for the many people who are so frustrated by the prevalence of zerging in Urban Dead. Thanks for your attention. --WanYao 13:17, 31 August 2008 (BST)

Sure, I'll take a look at any ideas or technologies people have got. I'm not aware of any silver bullets that don't also turn up false-positives for people on weird ISPs or who have a misleadingly-configured home network, but would be happy to be proven wrong. --Kevan 11:29, 5 September 2008 (BST)
Interesting Tangent: Speaking of silver bullets, i recently found out that all that stuff from days yonder referring to silver bullets and there use in banishing monsters is actually ambiguous as to if it's talking about actual silver, or mercury (which was known as quicksilver at the time). so yeah, you may in fact be unaware of any mercury bullets. Just keep that in mind when banishing foes.--xoxo 12:36, 5 September 2008 (BST)

There was a discussion on about this... Where some people were attempting to seriously address the issue and then come to you with some solutions. Sadly, interest seemed to wane once Finis Valorum apparently left the game... However, I am going to copy what was probably the most relevant and hopefully most useful post in that discussion. As you'll see, the solution was not an algorithm and/or set of "suspicious" IPs, etc. -- which I gather was you were talking about above? Rather, the main idea it was using a list of known proxies and simply banning them. I actually think the wiki sysops have a pretty long list of banned proxies, for a start perhaps that could be used...

And, no solution is going to perfect. There will always be holes, always ways around whatever measures you impliment. As the post I'll copy discusses. That, I think, is pretty well understood. However, the point is to make it as difficult as possible for people to cheat. Open proxies are just too easy to find and use... Now, I don't know if paying for a proxy list is going to be effective, or a waste of money, considering how much these things change, apparently -- that's something someone with the right knowledge would have to decide. Anyway, I'm place the text of the post on my Talk page for you to look at. Thanks for your time. --WanYao 13:21, 5 September 2008 (BST)

Sadly, we've got no follow up response yet... Kevan, are you listening? Just as another case in point, look at this... yeah I know what you say... But just look... I think you need to... I don't want to be a "bitch" about this... But I am really, really hoping we can find some way to address the zerging issue, and this requires a dialogue with you...

LOLz at my insane typos notwithstanding (i meant "flayed alive") .... This is sadly typical... We see this stuff all the time: here, 4 alts, at least, 2 each in adjacent buildings, from someone with a whole slew of "mithra" alts, many more than these 4, many of them previously spotted together -- this guy is familiar to us... We've presented some ideas for dealing with zergs like this, there is a discussion on the AZM Talk page... Will you work on this? --WanYao 21:08, 12 September 2008 (BST)

Kevan, please do this: community appointed UD moderators. These trusted moderators will ban obvious zerging reported by players. To investigate zerging only basic information is needed: history of when the zergs all logged in, and how long they've been around each other. 95% of zergers are stupid and lazy and will be caught this way. No permanent bans, just temporary ones. Enough to make the zergers life difficult. --Rupert 19:05, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

COMMUNITY appointed? You're joking, right? --HAHAHA DISREGARD THAT, I SUCK COCKS 21:09, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

I'm kind of new, so forgive me if this is stupid... Am I correct in assuming that a lot of these zerg characters are level 1, or to a lesser degree level 2 that seldom level up or even gain XP but are used as scouts. If that's the case then I would think that any real account is going to gain XP and level up within reasonable time periods. If that's the case then would purging level 1 & 2 characters that don't level in say a month get rid of a lot of zergs? Or is there a legitimate reason for accounts within these parameters? --mvario 01:59, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Most zergs (despite the name) do infact end up leveling up, check out all the GTFO zergs for an example. The one's that do stay at lvl 1 and 2 are throw aways that won't be used again anyway, so deleting them wouldn't have any effect except to free up the account name to be used by another player. And that is something Kevan has said he doesn't want as it would cause confusion. Also lol @ my post up there ^ from Sept 5.--xoxo 08:48, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

About the proxy issues...

this site: had a similar iddue which involved everyone giving themselves votes using proxyies from Recently the website restted all the lists and when I tried to give hits to my gmod clan, I discovered that by some sort of meckanism they had managed to block proxies from being able to vote. I know they hadn't simply banned them because even my top secret proxy was blocked and I had never used it to access the website before. Maybe if you could get in contact with this "Pulsar effect" guy we could finally end this. The man 20:31, 13 September 2008 (BST)

It's really not as simple as some people seem to think. Web-based CGI or PHP proxies, or even SOCKS/HTTP proxies, are merely the tip of the iceberg – anyone with any decent technical expertise or friends with same can bypass any proxy list you care to come up with. Sure, it might be helpful, but it won't be a silver bullet, as Kevan alluded to above. Either way, we'll need to continue with community-based solutions, as well as any additional technological measures that may be implemented. And remember...
It may well be doubted whether human ingenuity can construct an enigma... which human ingenuity may not, by proper application, resolve.

Future history wipes

Would it be possible leave a few more months worth of page histories next time a wipe is done? It's making it very hard to evaluate and track deletion requests, vandal histories and the like when histories just weeks old are missing, making it especially difficult to determine who should have "ownership rights" of group pages. Loosing histories will always be a problem, but the problem can be lessened significantly if you could keep it to older edits -- boxy talki 16:56 20 September 2008 (BST)

The problem with that is to use headshot, you need to interact with zombies. A lot of the zeds left metagame, and all you'd do is draw others to your location. So yes. Bring it back. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 19:33, 5 October 2008 (BST)
I agree, running from zeds is getting old. I imagine they must be pretty bored as well. If not perma-death, how about headshot drops AP to zero. Otherwise we'll continue this war of attrition. Its not a boring arse line. Its a simple fact. All accusations of abusing the status of sysop as abadge of authority to force ones wishes on the community must come with clear evidence over a substancial period of time. So far no such evidence has been presented, and all my requests that it be have been soundly ignored by all concerned. --The Grimch U! E! 11:36, 7 October 2008 (BST)

There being no official method or process of notification...Here is the result. Note the community "petition" that is also currently attached to the position. Bug, "zerg flag", or what?

This alt has recently tried searching for FAKs in a powered Mall with *no* success. 'Tis far more than bad luck... All other actions seem to working just fine, and I really can't see how a zerg flag could have been activated, even accidentally. Is this a bug, some unannounced change, or has a zerg flag somehow been activated? Anyone else had anything similar happen? But if it is a bug, then I'll report it normally... Thanks. --WanYao 05:09, 9 October 2008 (BST)

Unannounced change, although you shouldn't be getting zero success. If it keeps up, report it as a bug and we'll get some more data on it. --Kevan 12:17, 9 October 2008 (BST)

Perhaps, but it makes a difference. And considering it was suggested through the wiki suggestion system it'd a tip of the hat to the crowd over there (regardless of whether or not you actually saw that ;) ), i look forward to new updates :D something pro zombie perhaps? Things have quietened down in Malty as of late...btw kudos on the ruin update, she added a whole new dimension to the game.--xoxo 12:31, 9 October 2008 (BST)
Oh good. I thought this was just me. I have been getting reduced search rates EVERYwhere. (Hospitals, Malls, NT buildings.) Quite a few days I've spend 18~23 AP in these buildings over a period of about 10~12 minutes and have found nothing at all. Recently I've used a mall-searcher and spent 20 AP in Caiger NW and have found nothing in any store. It woulda been nice to see this as an official update. Pakopako 14:35, 9 October 2008 (BST)
Yay! Updates are ace. :D -- Cheese 17:47, 9 October 2008 (BST)
Yes, please announce it or something. I was sad to find just 2 FAKs with 20 APs in a lightened mall with bargain hunting. Its just very less. I believe I know exactly why Kevan implemented this. And it pleases me, personally, very much. :) Meanwhile, this wasn't a game-mechanic change, just a search rate nerf... Thus, I think it's cool it was left for us to discover on our own, and not as an announcement... Coup II

I have regularly spoken to you of the abuses of adminsistrator and the flaws of the system. I have begged, and pleaded for you to become involved in fixing these problems. You have told me to do it myself. Tow/three days ago i notified you of my intent to stage a coup on this wiki and enforce a better way, at the very least as a trial run. I also informed you that you could call it off simply by telling me "no". Since you havent responded, and circumstances have cospired to make such an option impossible in the immediate future due to the very corruption that has taken root, i have been forced to go ahead earlier than i would have liked. I merely ask that you adopt a wait and see attitude towards what i am trying to do. This is my last throw of the dice. My last ditch attempt to make this a better place before i take my leave of this community forever. I apologise for the manner in which i had to bring it about however. --The Grimch U! E! 10:26, 9 October 2008 (BST)

Hello Grim. I read your email as a bold request for permission to single-handedly institute "sweeping reforms" and selective sysop demotions. I didn't realise you were threatening to actually abuse bureaucrat powers and go ahead regardless, if I didn't respond quickly enough.
Yes, whenever you email me asking that I force through a change that you personally want implemented, I suggest that you take it through the proper channels - usually a policy discussion, to at least get some community feedback first. I don't see why you couldn't have done that here. --Kevan 12:17, 9 October 2008 (BST)

First Katthew, now grim. There is no place for common sense is there? Maybe i'm not in possession of all the facts; all I see is one frustrated person finally snapping, after years spent as one of the very few sysops to actually work to make this a better place - rather than feather his own nest. The wiki has finally moved from being a source of information to some kind of passive-aggressive, UD version of Facebook. I'd rather have one person capable of making a mature decisions, unafraid to step on a few toes and deflate a few egos, than a gaggle of preening children. ~2 years till the next sysop snaps. I can understand where Grim was coming from though. It's very frustrating when people constantly attack you for no perceived reason, and eventually you *have* to snap, no one can sustain continued harassment. Grims misconduct case showed this, sysops calling for Grims demotion over something so minor was ridiculous. Unfortunately once a group of users has decided to attack you there's nowhere safe on the wiki, and eventually you are forced to leave until things cool off, which can be a long while, and difficult to do if you are a regular. - Jedaz - 11:35/13/10/2008

@Cyberbob - What kind of restraint are you talking about? Restraint of language? I don't see anyone else restraining themselves. Restraint of Sysop powers? Well there wern't any successful misconduct cases about misuse. If you are talking about restraining yourself once you've snapped then you must be laughing. Don't get me wrong, Grims attitude didn't help the situation, but people making a mountain out of a molehill doesn't going to help either.
@DDR - What has Grim done since June to have this "uprising" occur? Personally I didn't see Grim do anything outside of his regular behaviour (ignoring this most recent case), and the community has known about his behaviour for a long time and still elected him! Would the community still have rised up if this didn't occur? If not then it's just an angry mob and it would have cooled down eventually, where as an uprising would still have occured.
Anyway, if either of you wish to continue this conversation I'ld suggest we move this to my talk page rather then clog up Kevans. - Jedaz - 00:34/14/10/2008
My point, Jedaz, was that if Grim was at all socially intelligent he would have realised that people weren't going to take his shit forever. If he wanted to prevent an explosion of the sort we saw he should've taken steps to improve his self-control. Blaming his completely unreasonable hissy fit (ZOMG IM GONNA LOSE MAI CRAT STATUS ALL MUST DIE) on the completely understandable reactions of everyone else is ridiculous. You need to take off the "I got yo back brotha!" goggles (you think I don't remember the circumstances of your demotion?) and take a step back to look at things realistically. --HAHAHA DISREGARD THAT, I SUCK COCKS 06:37, 14 October 2008 (BST)
I supose you have a point. But I don't think you fully understand the reason I chose to be demoted (if you did then you wouldn't have brought it up). My point is if you don't have the support of the team you are working in then of course you are going to find it tough and eventually you are either going to quit or break. Nobody seems to care that it can actually get to this point. - Jedaz - 02:20/16/10/2008
Cyberbob's right. Do you actually have a personal history with Grimsky? He has been planning this entire explosion for a very long time. He probably stretched out the time of the case so it could build up to a bigger explosion. He deliberately did this for his own ego. And yet you don't think he was unfit to be at the position he was at? Why argue with us more? Ask the entire community which demanded what we demand right now. You know, where he admits to hounding sysops such as Vista and Hagnat to get them to quit their positions. Coincidentally, after he got Hagnat to quit, he got elected as a Bureaucrat. No, obviously no long term plan in place.

No way to prove this but on IRC Grim would often criticize my "hissy fits" of pissing people off for lulz and then brag about how he could do it better. I think AS remembers it, he often hung out in #udwiki. My point, he planned this. That wasn't impulse. He made these notes on attempting to scrap the system back in July, which included the idea that my veto power was a "problem" and should be revoked. --Kevan 23:51, 14 October 2008 (BST)
That's kind of why I am confused how what Amazing did was worse than this. There is a huge history of edits of Grim chasing users off of the wiki in order to attain the power he craved (by his own admission), then kicks off the rest of the sysop team to implement his changes when he is threatened, yet he doesn't receive the same punishment. --Akule Maker of fine, hand-crafted UDWiki sass since 2006 -- Akule School's back in session™ 00:15, 15 October 2008 (BST)
You're confusing yourself, because the Amazing and Grim situations are totally different. Amazing wasn't a sysop when he earned his permban through the established VB escalation system, and it was also a long, long time ago. Most of the sysops ruling on Grims case had nothing to do with the wikigate farce. Careful what you wish for, Akule, Witch Burners arn't that picky, as you well know -- boxy talkteh rulz 12:35 15 October 2008 (BST)
Oh, okay, so talking with Kevan about how Grim probably should have been permabanned for chasing away several good sysops, plotting to remove Kevan's veto power, and overthrowing the other sysops results with veiled threats of forcing me off the wiki from you. Gotcha. Umm...Boxy? How is what Grim did similar to the Witch Burners? Our goal is to remove those who create mass amounts of drama on the wiki through vandalism, arby's, and other crap. We are the vigilantes that work where the sysops can't. Grim would have been a target of ours if we weren't so afraid of him banning us after labeling him a target. --Sonny Corleone DORIS MSD pr0n 22:25, 15 October 2008 (BST)
Well, I was referring to the way Grim has become a targeted witch, actually, but he did use similar tactics, now you mention it -- boxy talkteh rulz 12:26 16 October 2008 (BST)
The problem Grim saw with Kevan's veto power was that Kevan's refusal to participate in the wiki and the absence of the threat of the use of that power was in and of itself damaging to the wiki and led to a lot of the crap that annoys all of us. It wasn't that Kevan had veto power but that Kevan wasn't willing to give that power any weight. A ruffian headbutted me for 1 damage today, as a human. Is this a new addition or am I slow? I basically came here to ask, Kevan, how does one headbutt? The only reason the shooting cheat got fixed was because enough people decided to whine about such a minor thing. No one really cares about this one and it's been known for a long long time. Greetings. I, amongst others, would like to know your opinion on publicity of the Big Brother house location on the wiki. Should it stay hidden or be revealed? --~~~~ [talk] 13:37, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Unless Kevan comes out and says otherwise, this is no different than any other location in the game. Removing it is in no way different to a group of trenchies removing Giddings Mall from the map in case MOB comes to visit. Information is free. Censorship is bad.
This wiki is a game resource, not a vehicle for censorship so that certain players can increase their chances of winning a DVD.
Also this information has already been disseminated to public UD forums and is available through public iwitnesses. -- To know the face of God is to know madness....Praise knowledge! Mischief! Mayhem! The Rogues Gallery!. <== DDR Approved Editor 13:41, 2 November 2008 (UTC)

Mediawiki Update

Hi, just wondering if there any chance of getting wiki software updated? The latest version is v1.13 and there are several useful new features, including:

  • Expiry dates on page protections
  • Finer control over permissions and permission assignment (e.g. Assigning the ability to remove only certain groups)
  • Ability to merge page histories
  • AJAX-based page watching and a bunch of usability improvements (User information when viewing a deleted revision, predefined deletion reasons, useful links in various places, etc.)

It's not urgent or anything, but it would be nice if you could put it on your busy to-do list :D.--The General T Sys U! P! F! 14:19, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Amount of characters in a broadcast

I was wondering, Since I started the Galaxy News Radio i've found that the very small amount of characters you can use is at best, a thorn in my side, couldn't it be possible to make the transmission amount of characters the same as for speaking, it makes perfect sense really --Three Dog 21:35, 22 November 2008 (UTC)

If you want to make a suggestion for an in game feature, take it by Developing Suggestions and get some constructive criticism before putting it up for voting. Although as far as i'm aware the character cap exists to limit spamming of radio channels.--xoxo 05:49, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
Actually it's probably more of a necessary thing like the 50 people limit in normal speak is. Radio can't share that limiter because that would eliminate it's whole purpose so the only other ways to limit it is to put an upper end on how much you can say per day per channel.--Karekmaps?! 06:21, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
It's a possibility, but since character limits (as far as i'm aware) predates the need for limiting talking to 50 it seems odd.--xoxo 06:37, 23 November 2008 (UTC)

Stop right there Iscariot! I am sick and tired of you constantly saying that every sysop on the team is going agaisnt the wishes of the community! Most of the community never has a problem with the current admin team, and when they do it's rarely a huge problem. Now you come on Kevan's page and still continue the bad mouthing. Just face it, no matter what you will never be pleased with the administration and so you will constantly have to pretend that the whole community is on your side so that you will feel right in your head.--SirArgo Talk 01:45, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
How many people are there playing the game? How many are on this wiki? Yes, some people don't have time to spend on anything other than playing the game, but how many people are putting hours a day into the meta game and still won't touch this wiki without an exceptional reason? And how many of those people have told you that the current administration team is one of the primary reasons? My total will beat yours. -- To know the face of God is to know madness....Praise knowledge! Mischief! Mayhem! The Rogues Gallery!. <== DDR Approved Editor 01:52, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
The wiki is an information source. Almost everything is explained in game when you encounter it (1st death, 1st Rez. etc.) So, not every one needs to touch the wiki or even use it as a resource.
The wiki is the worst place to organize and meta-game. Just ask DHPD. When we were just Project:T.I.M.E. (well, before the Dead/DoDH) we were seriously outnumbered by them, but because they had all of their profiles linked on here and updated where they were going to be and who they were working with and so on we knew enough about them to take them out. The wiki shouldn't be for the meta-game it should be for information. That's why most groups of note have an off site forum to metagame. You can't blame the current staff because people have figured out that giving away too much information on their groups is bad thing.--– Nubis NWO 14:40, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Much as I hate the way Iscariot is going about his crusade I have to say he does have a point. The sysop team probably does not represent the view of even a large minority of players and that explains why so few players contribute. Not that i think its all the Admin teams fault, but the rules they follow and enforce reflect a community that no longer exist. Most sysops were promoted long before most current players even heard of the game yet the tag "trusted user" is still attached to the title "SYSOP". Few current wiki users vouched for them and fewer still of the actual player base and yet they still cling to positions claiming that "popular" votes undermine the system! They are right that popularity does not mean competence but... Franky i find it a bit odd that sysops can claim the label "trusted user" and not be willing to allow the community to confirm that label. Look back to Conn's promotion bid, or Boxy's or Hagnats or even Kareks and even without checking i can say with confidence that at least half those that vouched are no longer active.... Now i personally Would vouch for them all but my point is that they were not voted in by the current community and the claims that they are trusted users wear very thin in light of the fact that they do not seem willing to trust the communities opinion on pretty much any issue!--Honestmistake 02:15, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
The sysop team doesn't have to represent the view of a large majority of players, it only has to represent the view of the wiki community. Whenever I play a browser game I don't always sign up to their forums/wiki/whatever they have. A large portion of users probably won't bother contributing to the wiki because so many other users already are. If I was to ask you, "what needs contributing to on the wiki?", I'm sure you probably won't have many answers. The only things of note are suggestions and suburb reports, and not everybody is interested in that (and the drama which comes with each of them). - Jedaz - 02:26/16/01/2009
I have a few, if you want a list feel free to pester me some time.--Judge Karke, self-proclaimed Decider of Everything and Ruler of All 02:29, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
I agree that the only bits of the wiki that interest most players are the Maps, suggestions and suburb reports (I include maps because i assumed you had forgotten them?) that said i do think that the system is set up to support the views of long time players (contributors) rather than the new players who are actually the lifeblood of the game. While obviously the wiki needs to pay some attention to long time editors like me,wan,cyberbob,ahlg,etc... i would think it would be far more important to promote the wiki to new uers. I still play (and i hope/assume that those named do too) and i would hope that everyone on the admin team does to but it has to be said that without change the game becomes dull and people leave. If the wiki and its admin team does not reflect the changing demographic of the game it is missing what is surely a fundemental point for its existence?--Honestmistake 02:40, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
I remembered the maps, but I did not include them because there is very little to nothing which a new user can contribute to (which is what I'm focusing on). I agree, we should encourage new users to join and contribute, however most of the other work is maintence which doesn't exactly draw the crowd. If you have an idea which would encourage new productive users to sign up then I'ld like to hear it. I'ld be more then happy to help flesh out any ideas you may have. - Jedaz - 02:50/16/01/2009

Updating the Wiki software, 2.0

The wiki software, as it stands, is two years old (ish, in the coming month.) As well as the obvious bugfixes and minor changes that can't be gone into detail here, 1.13.3 of MediaWiki has some useful new features that we could use:

  • Expiry dates on page protections
  • Finer control over permissions and permission assignment (e.g. Assigning the ability to remove only certain groups)
  • Ability to merge page histories
  • AJAX-based page watching and a bunch of usability improvements (User information when viewing a deleted revision, predefined deletion reasons, useful links in various places, etc.)
  • Image undeletion enabled by default
  • A prettier list of special pages (compare to Wikipedia's)

There are heaps of other changes-you can look at the release notes linked here. I know that updating the server will take some time, but it would be nice if you could add it to your busy schedule.

I stole some of that list from The General above

Misconduct Case Feb 2009

A user has brought a case over on the Administration: Misconduct page that indicts every member of the administration team except your personal account and the Urban Dead admin account also controlled by yourself. Due to the obvious problems with ruling on cases in which you are also a named party, none of the current administration team may rule on the case (that is if they conform to the community's policies). Would it be possible for you to quickly look over the case and either rule misconduct or not misconduct to prevent unnecessary fall out? -- To know the face of God is to know madness....Praise knowledge! Mischief! Mayhem! The Rogues Gallery!. <== DDR Approved Editor 17:54, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Pretty sure Kevan isn't going to buy into this shit fyi --Cyberbob 18:06, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
I think you're mistaking me for Read. Fact is, that case is going to sit there for a couple of weeks whilst you and he debate the finer points of whatever it is you discuss. If an involved sysop (as they all are) removes it then we're asking for drama. Kevan can spend five minutes and solve the whole thing for the community, even if he just states that he declines to get involved and rule, which will obviously mean that the sysops cannot be found guilty of misconduct and this will allow the case to be archived. -- To know the face of God is to know madness....Praise knowledge! Mischief! Mayhem! The Rogues Gallery!. <== DDR Approved Editor 18:16, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
I may have to agree with Iscariot here. Getting Kevan to say something, anything, will be the only way to end the case without pissing off Read and causing him to file another misconduct case to whomever is the sysop responsible for breaking procedure and then causing a huge wave of drama, and we all know he's chomping at the bit for something truly substantial to hit the administration with.--SirArgo Talk 18:23, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
The amount of drama someone causes is only as much as everyone else allows them to (I wasn't mistaking you for Read btw Iscariot; I wasn't intending to implicate you whatsoever). If nobody feeds the troll he will eventually starve to death. --Cyberbob 18:30, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
My opinions on Read, yourself, the sysop team and Santa Claus aren't involved here. The simple fact that allowing the precedent of an involved party to remove a case shouldn't be something we're striving for. Personally I'd rather have Kevan rule, and I think we all know which way. However provided that Kevan publicly responds in some way, even if that response is "I'm not ruling, I don't get involved", then we have a way to remove the case validly. -- To know the face of God is to know madness....Praise knowledge! Mischief! Mayhem! The Rogues Gallery!. <== DDR Approved Editor 18:40, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
kk --Cyberbob 18:43, 12 February 2009 (UTC)
Read was irrelevant, he wouldn't have continued it and Iscariot has no intentions here but to try and cause said drama. It's what he always does, jumping on something someone else made and perverting it for his own attempts at causing needless drama and faux rebellion to stroke his ego that the sysops who punish him for his actions aren't trusted by the community. The validity of the case was never relevant to his trying to stir shit, neither was the legitimacy of any action a sysop could take in response to it, to him it's all gonna be called abuse. --Karekmaps?! 04:14, 13 February 2009 (UTC)
Not seeing any reason to get involved here; either the misconduct system is poorly worded, or it's being misinterpreted. You shouldn't be able to accuse all but one sysop of misconduct, and allow that one sysop to judge the rest. --Kevan 23:11, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

Possible Massive Zerging in Dunell Hills

About three days ago a large number of new characters all called "TheDeadDie" (i.e., TheDeadDie1, TheDeadDie15, etc.) started appearing in Dunell Hills. The first the DHPD heard of it was this iWitness report.

There are now, apparently, over 100 of these characters.

Obviously there is an outside possibility this is a large group of new players but, on the whole, it looks like zerging on a massive scale.

The DHPD are currently trying to find out more about the situation and deal with it. We thought we should give you a heads up, however, in case there was something obvious in the server logs that would provide definitive proof of zerging and allow swift action to be taken at your end. We understand that you normally prefer to keep out of zerging cases, but this looks pretty outrageous to us and we thought you should, at least, know about it. Louise 11:39, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

A brief education by the University of Google finds no such laws relating to death threats, but I would imagine that such a law would be buried deep in things like criminal codes. If it comes to it, I'll ask one of my teachers about the (Australian) legal system when it comes to these things, or one of my parents (both lawyers.) Back in the Day Xoid and I had to do some research on the TOS because of a user abusing in serious violation of them. However I've gone looking and haven't been able to find the references anywhere still on the Wiki. It was probably on a talk page of some article that was deleted in an edit without being archived. The primary gist of it was this... any form of intimidation that went beyond a certain level of namecalling and usual wiki BS was a violation, ESPECIALLY if it included "real world"tm threats of harm or violence. Also included were any situation where hosted domains were used to damage the effectiveness of another website or host (as an example you couldn't use any part of the host to launch a d.o.s. attack on another domain. Not that this was really possible by anyone but Kevan. Also iirc the Wiki and the Game were on different hosts at teh time but I'm pretty sure that has changed since then. I don't know. Making an update is a lot more than just coding it. The balance needs to be thought of thoroughly and it needs to be tested. These things take time. Sure, Kevan could probably push out one update a week if he wanted to and wasn't lazy, but those would be unbalanced and buggy updates. Unbalanced and buggy updates are more likely to drive people away than a lack of updates. The game simply doesn't need to change every month, not even every couple of months. If you find the game boring, go and do something interesting and different yourself. --Midianian¦T¦DS¦SP¦ 09:59, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Yeah. Lots of rushed, unbalanced updates would simply destroy the game (and it has nearly got to that point before.) Linkthewindow  Talk  10:12, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

I find myself in the middle of this arguement, in terms of the two sides. On the one hand, I don't want Kevan to break the game balance every week, fix it and then break it in a different way the next week, but on the other I feel that an update is about due.

Besides, I think an update every two months or so isn't much of an ask, even if its just adding an item from the PR suggestions. --Blake Firedancer T E RNL? P.I.S.I.T. 10:53, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

What do we so badly need an update for? The game is well balanced and has a fairly complex and robust play. More fiddly little detail skills likely won't improve that play any, and won't draw in / hold onto more players. SIM Core Map.png Swiers 06:40, 18 April 2009 (BST)

A few things

Firstly, about that MediaWiki upgrade. Sorry if I'm pestering you, it's just that it would be quite useful (an upgrade to Checkuser would be nice as well, I've seen screenshots of a later version and it looks like it streamlines the process a little.)

Secondly, a user asked me the other day (a few weeks ago) about a problem he was having in my chatbox:

The problem: when I, to get rid of the horizontal scrollbar, use "overflo*w:auto" instead of "overflow:scroll" the wiki's spam filter won't let me use that code. I don't know if you can edit the spamfilter (I'm wiki illiterate), but do you know how I can fix this? Thanks a ton. VI 22:05, 3 May 2009 (BST)

Finally, and on a pedantic note, would it be okay if you could turn the Guides namespace into a proper one? So Talk:Guides:Shelter is rendered as Guides talk:Shelter. As far as I know, there are a few in the Guide: namespace too, so we'll have some moving to do if this is done (sysops, of course.)

"overflow:auto" is a standard spambot trick for hiding all their links in a 1px div, which I think we were having trouble with a few years ago. The filtering is possibly hardcoded somewhere.
If there's general support for another namespace, point me at the discussion and I'll add it.

Suggesting Suggestions Change

I want your opinion on a proposed change I have to the Suggestions Layout. I’d think it would be more efficient to have a normal suggestions area, a clothing suggestions area, and a humorous suggestions area, all with links listed one after the other on the main voting page. I also see the humorous suggestions layout is a bit confusing, and I would recommend splitting it into 2 parts, the funny and the non-funny, then splitting it into the many categories (areas of effect) under each heading. I’d also ask if the humorous suggestions voting process would become something similar to the normal process, with each suggestion open for 2 weeks, but no SPAM votes (just FUNNY or NOT FUNNY). Would this be a viable option? I’d think the layout changes should at least make it easier to find and view them all.

I would also like to know if there’s a process for suggesting that certain stuff be added to the Frequently Suggested section on the main voting area. There seem to be some common ones I’d like to have added to the list.

I also have a question about the normal voting process that only you can answer. Does SPAM=STRONG KILL? I see it’s still a common issue today, and it’s still debated if you can vote SPAM for a strong kill, or only vote SPAM if a suggestion is game-breaking or horribly unnecessary. Also, could you check the voting guidelines section and make sure it matches whatever your decision is? Thanks.--Kolechovski 22:46, 2 June 2009 (BST)

In too many years of wasted time here I don't recal Kevan ever directly commenting on suggestions (or indeed much of anything else) so I doubt he is going to start now. Huge Ruin bug could leave the whole of Borehamwood caded in less than a month.

Hey Kevan,

Wednesday night a member of my borehamwood survivor group did a very large suicide repair, when he logged himself back on, he found he had 50ap and the building was repaired.

Thursday night, I attempted my own suicide repair and yet again the same thing happened.

We've done a lot of suicide repairs and as such we know that these were the highest repairs we have attempted. And they both worked. To check our findings, we asked another survivor to repeat the experiment, to confirm our spadework was correct.

It was. Not only that, but this survivor was able to enact the repair, recade the building to ehb and then enact ANOTHER suicide repair, which left them BACK on 50ap. In fact the survivor managed to repeat this 6 times. With one character. In one day. Before the 300 IP for one character kicked in.

At this time 4 of us survivors know the exact technique, but at least 10 others are pretty close to working it out (AP levels etc). I reckon by sunday all 51 survivors will have worked it out.

As it stands the whole challenge of surviving borehamwood is moot. We can't do coma repairs on 99% of buildings without this happening, and Im not expecting zeds to hang around with this giant loophole. It also destroys the smugness us survivors have from surviving for 6 months.

All 4 survivors who do know the trick have currently stopped repairing buildings within the range, but I can't control the whole population.

At the minute survivors could repair the whole of NE Borehamwood, Radlett or Elstree in a day, 1 survivor could reclaim the big brother house on their own,

Apologies for the lack of screenshots, but with permadeath as it is, we don't want to give away our position.

It seems to be a dupe of the following case on bug reports.

Apologies for posting it here, but I felt the game breaking nature of this bug warrants the intrusion. Let me know if you need more details. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 16:40, 12 June 2009 (BST)

Thanks. Building repair has now been temporarily disabled in Borehamwood and Monroeville, while this is fixed. --Kevan 16:46, 12 June 2009 (BST)
When you say massive repair, do you mean it's bringing you to under -255 AP? I could think of some weird wrapping thing happening when the AP gets too negative and it tries to make it positive or something, capping at the 50 AP norm. 255's the magic number for how large a single byte can represent. It's may have something to do with what type of data Kevin's storing AP with - integer, double, float, etc. (whoo edit conflicted by Kevan) --Bob Boberton TF / DW 16:49, 12 June 2009 (BST)
The cutoff point (Now its banned) is -150ap Any suicide repair that takes you below this value creates the reset. --RosslessnessWant a Location Image? 16:51, 12 June 2009 (BST)
Very strange... -150 to 50 is a range of 200, nothing particularly significant. Then again, I have no idea how Kevan coded AP regen. Now the big repair costs have come back to bite in an ironic kind of way, eh? :P --Bob Boberton TF / DW 16:53, 12 June 2009 (BST)
Its quite a wide range. Theres probably been only a handful of such building in Malton's history. Borehamwood has a whole cities worth. If it takes a while kev can we have an amnesty in the cities? Upgrading the wiki again

It's about that time of year. The wiki could use an upgrade, among the various features mentioned many times in the past that upgrading to a more up to date mediawiki version would provide as of 1.14 there is now a NewUsers log, which would be invaluable for catching throw away and vandal alt accounts like User:Izumi and User:3pwv used to use along with actually making user efforts to be welcoming like Welcomenewbie accountable and possibly useful. 1.14 also brought in the ability to view deleted user contributions(instead of just the current ones) for sysops, the ability to omit diffs after rollback, and a fix at least one particularly exploitable checkuser bug that would allow users to screw with the ability for sysops to search the logs.

I'd mention some of the features in previous version updates but I'm sure by now you're pretty well aware of them as it's been brought up many times in the past. 1.14, though, would significantly increase the ability for sysops to do their jobs when dealing with actual page vandalism and adbot spam along with helping the wiki, in general, run more smoothly from day to day.(1.15)(1.14)(1.13)(1.12)(1.11)(1.10)--Karekmaps?! 17:40, 1 September 2009 (BST)

FYI re: "satellite phone"

Hi. So I recently wrote a Greasemonkey script that adds a "satellite phone" to the game. It's a simple messaging system with a user interface that embeds itself into the game, by modifying the rendered page in the user's browser, as Greasemonkey does. The thing does resemble the in-game mobile phone quite a lot, by design. Here's more info.

This was discussed in Brainstock [3], and some people complained about it. It was said that this unbalances the game, "overpowers" a game item, bypasses game rules by e.g. allowing zombies to send messages. This wasn't a general opinion--I certainly find it all a bit silly--but someone then suggested that what should be done would be reporting it to you, letting you decide if this extension is improper somehow.

I thought that was sensible, so I'm "reporting myself," in a way. Just posting it here as an FYI, so you are aware of this. Cheers. --Sophie ◆◆◆ CAPD 09:15, 4 September 2009 (BST)

Right, cheers Karek. Thing is, I'm not really expecting a response, and I'm not comfortable spamming his mailbox with this. I really do think this is all rather silly. I'm sure the game will survive my script long enough for him to read this at his convenience here. --Sophie ◆◆◆ CAPD 06:14, 5 September 2009 (BST)
From the sounds of it, it's just a script that facilitates metagaming. Like using MSN, or as we do, IRC... except done in-game. There's nothing zerg-tastic about it, nor does it collect data in ways that might be perceived as unfair, like DEMON or UDBrain. There's no reason to worry about what some git on Brainstock said (and BS is chock full of gits...), don't sweat it --WanYao 06:20, 5 September 2009 (BST)
Wonder what they say about us :*( --DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION-- 07:15, 5 September 2009 (BST)
They don't think about us, because they're not aware we exist. Most BSers really aren't too aware that there's a whole big world of UD players outside their little board. Well, ok, I think many are vaguely aware that zombies have this forum called bar-something-dot-something. And I think most of them are aware of the DEM subgroup called Red Rum; but this subgroup was created to give the appearance of in-game competition, to get around Malton's strong antitrust laws, so it basically counts as part of their self-enclosed milieu. Finally, many of them have used the wiki, but none of them will ever admit it, it's that taboo a subject. But other than that, to BSers, there is little other than BS. --WanYao 07:25, 5 September 2009 (BST)

I realise this may very well be a feature of the halloween event but with the changing of the kill messages the missing timestamps are a bit strange, just making sure you're aware Moonie Talk Testimonials 04:24, 1 November 2009 (UTC)
Actually, it's not just a lack of timestamps. I've noticed that all of the ones that lack timestamps are also for people that are not at my location. For instance, in this screenshot, the ones with timestamps are for people actually at my location, while none of the ones without them were people at my location (there were more actions under those, but they all had timestamps and were for people at my location). It's also interesting that some of the groups of events that took place repeat themselves a few times, and that "to talk" showed up as a contact of mine, despite the fact that he isn't. While you're at it, try to get urbandead popular again, the number of active characters is starting to drop below 20000, maybe it's time for some advertising, eh? --Umbrella-White.pngThadeous OakleyUmbrella-White.png 15:54, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Urban Dead might be popular if it wasn't such a broken game! What with the radical, nigh-unplayable imbalance that makes it utterly pointless to play a zombie. Oh, and that worthlessness carrying over to making it such a breeze to play a survivor. I mean there's absolutely no point in being a survivor when you can just stroll around the city without risking your neck. I mean even a large, dedicated horde of zombies (of which the game has, like, two) can't hold back one tenth their number in survivors.
For a zombie apocalypse game, there are fuck all zombies and there is fuck all apocalypse. The only way anyone really has fun is either griefing or sitting around roleplaying all day. And who the fuck can grief properly when the game is a buggy, unfinished pile of shit that makes it literally impossible for one of the sides to win? Not to mention that if all you're doing in game is roleplaying, what's to stop you from just doing it on a forum? Oh wait, nothing whatsoever, which is why the fucking unofficial forums for this game have more action than the game itself.
Urban Dead is broken, Kevan shows no interest in even looking into the billions of problems it has, so you're better off closing your browser and playing Left 4 Dead or something. Y'know, that's the zombie apocalypse game where the survivors face a credible threat that can't simply be trounced by locking a door and pushing a vending machine in front of it. FIX THE FUCKING GAME. --カシュー, ザ ゾンビ クィーン (ビープ ビープ) ;x You rated this wiki '1'! Great job, go hog wild! @ 07:38, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Some of us have actually given money to this game, by the way. It's not unheard of that people do pay for things online. But you keep that smug attitude because I'm sure it's helping you go far in life!--Globetrotters Icon.png #99 DCC 08:08, 14 March 2010 (UTC)
I'm not ungrateful, but I'd like to continue to play urbandead which I won't be able to do if the numbers of players keep dropping forcing Kevan to eventually pull the plug. --Umbrella-White.pngThadeous OakleyUmbrella-White.png 20:59, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
Well this "chap" thinks that if you're going to release something for public consumption, it shouldn't suck. The fact remains that the game is unbalanced, which makes it unfun. If, say, World of Warcraft made it so that the Horde had 1/10th the hit rate of the Alliance, Blizzard would be fucking crucified. Free or not, lousy design is lousy design. I'm not saying this out of entitlement or anything retarded like that, I am saying it as someone who wants to play the game without being gimped to fuck just because I want to be a zombie instead of a survivor. Of course, the alternative is for me (and the thousands of others who feel this way) to stop playing a game that is basically designed at the very basest level to screw us over. Then, WHOOPS! Goodbye donations and ad revenue! --カシュー, ザ ゾンビ クィーン (ビープ ビープ) ;x You rated this wiki '1'! Great job, go hog wild! @ 23:25, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
I actually think that what 'ruined' the game (at least balance wise) was zombies... The very fact that they sucked to play forced people to either leave or organize, net result mega hordes that were basically unstoppable and forced buffs for survivors to give them a chance while making it even less rewarding to play a feral zed. To all intent and purpose this game has more sides than it was ever designed for. We have survivors and zombies but each of those are split into different play styles which the mechanics struggle to balance. Basically survivors are better at killing other survivors than zombies are and zombies often end up killing other zombies more than actual survivors. Hell, some survivors max out without even seeing a zombie and the game set-up makes it an unrewarding struggle to level a new character in a city full of veterans. At the end of the day I think this game needs to evolve before it dies.... New (short lifespan) cities are probably the best way forwards in my opinion because the early days with their actual struggle to survive against 'equals' are great fun, the sense of discovery of a new place also really adds spice too. But hey, too many people seem attached to their maxed characters that they hardly ever play anymore to even contemplate such a thing! --Honestmistake 00:44, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
I think most of us will agree that something needs to be done, which is exactly what isn't happening or at least it seems that way. --Umbrella-White.pngThadeous OakleyUmbrella-White.png 18:09, 10 March 2010 (UTC)
Maybe fixing the ABYSMAL hit rates for zombies might help. I mean, supposedly I have a 30% chance of hitting with a bite attack against a given target for 1 AP. Now, I can easily spend (and have spent) 15 AP and only hit on that last, 15th attempt. What are the chances of this happening? Mathematically, you say it was (3/10)^15, or a 0.000001% chance. That isn't "bad luck", that goes beyond "bad luck" and into the realms of "your coding is so shitty if I saw it I would try to flush". There is actually more chance of me rolling the same number 10 times in a row on a regular six-sided die than there is of me missing that many attacks. But it happens, it happens frequently, and it's one of the billion reasons why this game needs a severe overhaul, and/or someone competent working on it. --カシュー, ザ ゾンビ クィーン (ビープ ビープ) ;x You rated this wiki '1'! Great job, go hog wild! @ 02:02, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

Sadly, I kinda agree with Honest, feral zombies have it extremely hard these days. They need to follow hordes around or just lay around and wait for destruction in their suburbs. Once the horde is gone though, their goes the bulk of your food. Its almost beneficial nowadays to be a killer or a survivor and thats it (assuming your not in a horde). -- Emot-argh.gif 15:41, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

Well looky, a whole cluster fuck load of whining.

Want more people to play? Go and fucking recruit them yourselves. Don't ask Kevan to fork out even more from his own pocket so that your enjoyment of this free game is improved. You spend the money. You put the work in. Alternately you all could shut the fuck up.

Want some changes? The FAQ says quite clearly to put them through the suggestions system rather than whine here like a bunch of fucking fort dwellers. Want Kevan to build you your own city to your own ideas? He's done it before for distribution companies, just do the same thing they did. Pay the man. Kevan's a professional, pay him his hourly rate if you want something. You're entitled to shit for free. He's nice enough to continue to let the game be played for free, so let's say enough with the comparisons to the money gouging and spyware installing World of Warcrack. Ask the man nicely how much your own city would be, plus an hourly rate for any bugs that appear, plus a negotiated set figure of each major update. Then go have a bake sale, car wash or just start selling organs on the black market and give Kevan the money for the work you want him to do.

Put your money where your whining is. -- To know the face of God is to know madness....Praise knowledge! Mischief! Mayhem! The Rogues Gallery!. <== DDR Approved Editor 19:35, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

Back when I was an admin and I moderated the Suggestions page with an IRON FIST, it was still a worthless piece of shit. These days it is approximately fifty gajillion times more useless and shitty. Kevan doesn't read it any more than he reads any other section of this wiki, not even just because he's lazy as sin, but also because they're not worth reading. Also, I've already dragged people into this game. Maybe you remember The Dead? You know, the 10,000-strong superhorde that practically wrecked the entire fucking game? All me, bitch. I got that shit going. Because unlike you, I am one proactive motherfucker who doesn't sit around doing shit-all.
So don't you fucking talk to me about recruiting people to play this game, you measly-mouthed little cumstain. I brought in more than you could possibly imagine with that withered rectum you call your brain. But hardly any of those people stayed around. Do you know why? Because THEY GOT TIRED OF PLAYING A BROKEN PIECE OF SHIT GAME WHERE THEIR CHOSEN SIDE WAS DELIBERATELY NERFED AND FUCKED OVER AT EVERY CONCEIVABLE TURN. That is what killed The Dead, you scurrilous prick-hungry cockholster - the fact the game sucks. We weren't beaten by any survivor group, we never even considered any survivor group to be more than the metaphorical bug on the windshield. Ten thousand zombies, motherfucker, and even with the ridiculously low hit rates, nonexistent RNG and inverse XP curve, we ruined your pathetic little world. If it hadn't been for all the flaws that UD has, driving away almost every single new player we drafted in, we'd have killed every last survivor in the city and turned it into a true zombie apocalypse.
So fuck you a million times up your gaping, cavernous asshole. I know what I'm talking about, and I know more about what you're talking about than you could ever hope to. Now sit the fuck down while the grown-ups have their chat, sweetie. We'll get you some crayons and glue, so you can cram them into your snotty orifices until you suffer fatal brain damage. Awww, poor cutie, is it too much if someone disagrees with you? I see you missed the major point, given you're so proactive and have such a large group of minions, why haven't you rallied them to donate a sum of money so that you can pay Kevan to make the game that you believe is fair? It's a very simple question. Kevan works for money, as proven by Borehamwood and Monroeville, if you want a map with your 'improvements' incorporating then you have to provide the same incentive that two distribution companies already did. Shouldn't be hard, after all you are "one proactive motherfucker". -- To know the face of God is to know madness....Praise knowledge! Mischief! Mayhem! But come on, Katthew, don't be a bitch. Little Issy's Mall Tour had what 300 zombies? Awwwww, that was the same number as the Central horde of the Dead. You know, back when it was winding down and most people wanted to be in the East or West coast Hordes. But, no, I'm sure he knows all about running big bad zombie hordes. June 1

It seems appropriate on this date of great expectation (Read that: ESCAPE) to reflect on a simple fact; I have taken many hours of pleasurable distraction from your game. I have enjoyed meeting people from around the world and the various schemes and factions they have created using your game as a springboard for their own creativity. While I live in New England, I have traveled to the other side of the globe and yet-I can honestly say I "know" more people around the world as a result of this little game then in all those thousands of miles of travel. So while I have "contributed" it would seem at least good manners to say thank you for what you have done. I have only been playing for close to a year, and I hear many folks voicing opinions about the "state of the game". I just thought it might be appropriate to suggest that the reason they feel so strongly about it is because it is a flexible well designed system that has added millions of hours of gaming to people worldwide. So, thanks for your efforts and creativity.--Belisarius17 04:50, 1 June 2010 (BST)

What are your views on Urban Dead being used by Hate groups ? With the user using imagery in attempt to bring race into the game. Eg:

I don't this is the actual RL group, just some pathetic little teen with anger issues. But still ? Should we look forward to the arrival of the KKK. Al Queda(?), Black Power, Mongrel Mob and the Care Bears ? --Rapture 20:36, 5 August 2010 (BST)

Why ? - this isn't about offensive names in-game as I email those to Kevan. Its about losers spewing their race\religion hate in the wiki thinking that they have the "right to". Didnt some of pH get banned for the 9\11 phased crap in game ?

This isn't about ingame characters (Also back in 05 I beleive offensive names were also nuked) this is about the wiki policy on HateGroups. The wiki is different to ingame as a user can contact any group or individual in a split second? and post there hate imagery\text on any page. Yet there is no policy only the rustling of paper under the false pretence any user here actually has any rights at all.. --Rapture 22:29, 5 August 2010 (BST)
If it's about the wiki then you'll get nowhere, there's not a single sysop corrupt enough to ban users/groups based solely on their beliefs. The sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new 22:32, 5 August 2010 (BST)
Well obviously thats why I'm posting here as this isn't real life so a users beliefs don't come into it, but what they post on wiki pages. Being non-white I take offense at that and the wiki administartion deosnt appear willing to act --Rapture 22:44, 5 August 2010 (BST)
We are not going to act. We're not going to ban groups based on content. Columbine Kids, Nazi Party of Malton, etc, etc, have not been banned, nor will this one. Yes it is offensive to people. So is the insult "faggot" but nothing has ever been done about its usage, nor about a million and one percieved wrongs. All you have to do is simply ignore the one sole user causing your offense, and he's liable to end up getting himself banned anyway, or he'll wander off due to not being given the attention he craves. Asking for the rules to be different for one group of users than for another is just wrong. The sun shone, having no alternative, on the nothing new 22:49, 5 August 2010 (BST)

Yes I have seen the sterling work you perform on his behalf, however I dont think there is a difference between a) banning a user ouright (Where race hate has no place in a simple game(not real life)) and b)Or saying he id allowed his views but then have wiki administrators trolling the user with a view to entrapping him into a rant, thus leading him to his ban. I would have thought a janitors role was to be impartial and not provoke a user knowing how he will react--Rapture 09:56, 13 August 2010 (BST)
I agree with some of your sentiments and I understand your concern about some of the ops and their behaviour going against a role model status on the wiki- but situations like this only prove that a sysop- janitor as you say- is exactly that- a regular user with the buttons only given to those entrusted not to misuse it- it's been a long lost fact to this wiki that sysops are still regular users, and should behave as such, which is why using sysop status as a symbol of authority over another user is serious misconduct. Do I give Cornholioo a hard time? For sure, but that's not so I can just go to A/VB and force his banning- I abstain from conflict of interest situations such as his recent banning because I know that following through my pestering actions with bias as a mod is abuse. The ops aren't specifically here to be looked up to, although I still understand where you're coming from and I partially agree that Cornholioo is getting a hard time compared to any other user in terms of sysop bias. I do think it's a shame this perceived bias is being overlooked by the community just because of the user in question. I was surprised the amount of ops who said yes to his permaban, and it's worth noting that the sysops who pester and bait him the most were the ones who voted no to the perma. Typically a perma is only for someone who is literally just trying to break the wiki on a regular basis, not someone who gets baited weekly, and if that was your assessment of the vote I agree with you. -- 13:30, 13 August 2010 (BST)

Um... Kevan, I'm not sure if it's your concern, but one of the advertisements in the UD log-in screen is probably a hacking scam.

The advertisement, for a game called "Slum City Enforcer" lead to this link When I clicked on Play Now for the game, it tried to download a trojan, which my anti-virus caught.

I really hope you can block this bad ad from Urban Dead. Thanks.

--Penguinpyro 03:18, 13 August 2010 (BST)

If I'm not mistaken, the UD site, and wiki, tend to make use of Google Ads,... which help generate profit for the site. That said, there is very little Kevan could probably do about it, aside from removing the ads themselves. That said,... that would be counter productive. I hope Kevan gets back to you though.... There are two reasons the military doesn't bomb the place:
  1. They still have hope. Their first priority has always been that absolutely nothing gets out, but, perhaps, the survivors inside will win out, a permanent cure will be found (so that the virus won't lay dormant in the living, only to restart the outbreak upon their death), and everyone can go home, happy and alive. Saves the government the bad PR of 6598 murders, too.
  2. Suppose <country> decides to invade Brittan. The British would lose a large amount of soldiers. They would be forced to send most of the guards around Malton to help fight off <country>. With insufficient guards, the border would be breached, and a zombie apocalypse would occur. Therefore, <country> decides not to invade Brittan, and Malton serves as an valuable asset.

One particular Christmas season, a long time ago, Santa was getting ready for his annual trip. But there were problems. Four of his elves were sick, and the trainee elves just weren't working out.

Things got worse when Mrs. Claus told him her mother was coming to visit. Then, when he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth. Two others had jumped the fence and were out carousing, heaven knows where.

When he went to load the sleigh, one of the side boards cracked and the toy bag fell to the ground, scattering the toys. Frustrated, Santa went into the house for a cup of coffee and a shot of whiskey, but when he opened the cupboard, he discovered the elves had apparently had a party, and there was nothing left to drink.

Just as he accidentally dropped the coffee pot, breaking it in hundreds of little pieces and splashing coffee on his suit, the doorbell rang.

Santa opened the door, cursing beneath his breath, And there stood a beautiful little angel with an enormous, perfectly shaped Christmas tree. "Merry Christmas Santa," the angel said. "Isn't it just a lovely day to be alive? Look! I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to stick it?"

Thus began the tradition of the little angel on top of the Christmas tree. Does anyone else have any other stories about how other traditions have come to be? -EstacadoTalk 15:54, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Because if Kevan took the time to program enough different religious buildings to satisfy the diverse population who play, there would be either too many religious buildings in the city, or very very few of each type (making them mere novelties). Policy Discussion about User talk:Kevan

Should have brought that to your attention earlier, but there's a policy discussion going on regarding your talk page.

It would make the rules on top of your talk page directly enforceable wiki rules. I.e., things like the snow spamming by Poodle of Doom would be treated as vandalism leading to warnings and bans. They can't be treated as such by now, as talk page rules need to be individually enforced by taking each individual violator to Arbitration first. (Which you could theoretically do, but which wouldn't be feasible looking at the time you spend on this wiki.)

Think it would be useful to know what you think of that proposal and how strictly you feel about seeing your talk page rules enforced. -- Spiderzed 12:05, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

A Request RE: Threaded Discussions

Hi Kevan!

As you may or may not know, I work for the Wikimedia Foundation as a features/product/interface designer. You may have heard of our flagship product, Wikipedia.

In the coming weeks, we're going to be rolling up a new type of threaded discussion system as a pilot. I am interested in seeing how the extension is received and used "in the wild" and was wondering if you'd be willing to run a pilot when the software is ready? I am asking now because our process for managing this type of stuff is pretty glacial but hopefully we'll be running around the end of Q1.

The system is currently deployed on some of our smaller wikis and tool systems (also places like and is called "Liquid Threads" (the version that exists on the svn repository is . . . outdated).

My current rough design can be found here. It will be moved into the main namespace later when I'm finished with the document.

Installing this extension will require an upgrade of your wiki to version 1.17 (due to be release in late January, currently), but that's okay since this version won't be available until February at the earliest.

Later iterations of this software will likely include such wonderful things as reputation systems and similar community-oriented elements.

(Also, there was a security update; you should update to at least 1.16.1).

Thanks!--jorm 05:20, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Kevan, I'm not sure if you've noticed them by now, but Malton is currently overrun by a new zerg army, as you can see in these screenshots: [5][6][7][8][9]. Now the ones in these screenshots aren't the only ones. Just a quick question. Do you care about people on the wiki here following your server host's TOS? It appears that people on the wiki just don't generally care, don't want to implement it because it will be too much "work" or is blowing it off simply because you haven't come down with god-law stating that you would like your property protected. Yeah, it's always the zerg accusation when we put the destruction on the city. It's certainly not being able to draw on a huge userbase to bring in overwhelming numbers of zombies led by a crew who has been doing the zombie horde thing for years. That couldn't possibly be it. No, it has to be three people at most with a fuckton of alternate accounts. That's clearly the only way this could be happening. --You rated this wiki '1'! There's a big difference between saying there may be a few zerg accounts, and flat out saying you have evidence of zergs. Yeah, sure, there MAY be a few dishonest members in a group our size. MAY. I could also say there MAY be zergs in The Fortress, or the DHPD, or the ACC. I'm not saying I have evidence of it, just that it may be possible, which makes it nothing more than speculation. Now, if someone says they have evidence AND they present it, that's a totally different story. If he gives us some solid evidence then it wouldn't be a problem. Having seen IRC transcripts and the like featuring members of The Dead and The Globetrotters, it looks to me like there really are just a giant boat load of them. While they may have an alt or two, there is so much city and so many of them that they would not need to bunch them up to decimate it. Stopping them before they get bored would take a “divine act” and I would rather die by zombie than live in a Malton where such an act could happen. Is it hard to be a survivor now? Yes! But remember…The Chinese character for “OH MY GOD THEY ARE GOING TO EAT US ALL!” is the same as the character for “opportunity” (Disclaimer: I do not speak Chinese). Please could you install ParserFunctions. It would be really helpful and should only take ~5 minutes.

It would also be appreciated if you could implement the autoconfirmed groups policy by adding $wgAutoConfirmCount = 25; and $wgAutoConfirmAge = 3600*168; to localsettings.php --The General T Sys U! P! F! 09:44, 11 May 2011 (BST)

There was some discussion of enabling ParserFunctions a few years ago - there's no doubt that it would bring all sorts of benefits, but there wasn't any serious rebuttal of Jorm's points about the server load. As I said at the time, I'd be reluctant to install ParserFunctions, watch people rework a load of pages and templates to use it, and then have to shut it off a month later when the server was slowing to a crawl.
Autoconfirmed settings have been updated, anyway. --Kevan 11:24, 16 May 2011 (BST)
The best rebuttal, in my opinion, to Jorm's comments is the comment from Swiers who said "Also, from what I know, bussiness logic is actually the LEAST lag producing of server functions; DB connections and file access are exponentially slower. "
Parser functions would actually be a more efficient way of implementing features for which we're currently relying on workarounds, such as {{Ifdef}} because it's Mediawiki native code rather than a workaround using nested templates.
It should also be pointed out that Wikipedia makes extensive use of Parser Functions without out any real negative effects. To me, this would seem to indicate that parser functions is stable and reasonably scalable. I would also suggest that it is more efficient to use Parser Functions for some displays than it is to have a bot make 700 updates.
Thanks for the autoconfirmed settings update (and the software update in general), BTW.--The General T Sys U! P! F! 21:14, 24 May 2011 (BST)
Being an employee of the Wikimedia Foundation, and somewhat intimately aware of how this stuff works, I can tell you that you do not want to install ParserFunctions. Wikipedia makes extensive use of them and we wish we hadn't let that genie out of the bottle. It is neither stable nor scalable; you are witnessing the work of some significantly talented individuals keeping it from falling down. Also there are around 450 servers actively sharing this load.
Rewriting the parser is actually our top technical priority for the next, oh, 12 months or so. Because it's awful. Seriously.--jorm 21:25, 24 May 2011 (BST)
Well, I want presume to argue with a mediawiki dev because you definitely know a hell of a lot more than I do. All I'll ask is: Is there any way to get some of the functions without the excessive server load? I really would like to kill off some of those {{If}} templates.
I'd also like to note that the documentation for Parser Functions is actually quite misleading, given what you've just said: It gives the impression that Parser Functions as a reliable extension that is a reasonable part if most mediawiki setups (the box at the bottom actually claims that it's stable and works in high traffic situations!)--The General T Sys U! And it pisses me off that those of us who play straight-up games now have to coexist with this/these jackass/jackasses. --Paddy DignamIS DEAD 23:26, 23 May 2011 (BST)

We don't try to accuse The Dead of zerging: we saw solid evidence of it. However, The Dead is an open group... So any jackass next door can begin to zerg and join that group for fun. Survivors however are not a group but a side... Accusing survivors to zerg because of The Dead is so ridiculous and self centered that it is not even funny. -- •Eagle of Fire•

Hey, I was just wondering if you minded granting sysops the 'suppressredirect' permission (by adding $wgGroupPermissions['sysop']['suppressredirect'] = true; to the config file). I have several Alt's that were paid for, and had been using till I took an absence, that are now no longer in the game. They are: Callasin, Andy Warhola and DirtMan's Socks.

Without RNG, we are nothing

What's up with the zombie hit rates on barricades in the past day or two? As a member of two of the big hordes, I've seen multiple zombie strike teams throw (literally) hundreds of AP at barricades and get some of the most pitiful returns in memory. As an example, one team used more than 240 AP on a building, and got around ten collapses (EHB down to QSB). Another put 106 AP into the cades, and got four or five collapses, with a third team getting very similar results. Numerous individual zombies that I talk to are talking about two or three collapses for 40 APs worth of attempts. I could continue with more examples, but I won't. I have to ask: do you actively tweak the RNG? If so, why such low returns? Zombies are currently outnumbered two-to-one, and yet we're experiencing even worse collapse rates than usual (and they're usually pretty bad). What gives? With respect, --BOSCH 17:34, 19 September 2011 (BST)

Shared Accounts/zergs

Kevan, your talk page is entirely tl;dr.

Anywhen, getting to the point, re: Bio-Mimetic Android Infestation Removal Corps, I'm bringing this to your attention, regardless of whether it's been discussed here or elsewhere on the wiki previously, as I'm fairly certain this kind of behavior is something you'd want to discourage. For your convenience, I've collated the profiles of these shared characters:

As you can see by simply skimming the profile ID numbers above, these characters were almost certainly created by the same user. Since the page advertises their passwords, one can never properly ascertain who is controlling the character/s at any given moment, thus there is a case to zerg list them at the least. I am requesting that you lock them, pending appeal and password change (if you even do that anymore.)

There are also several other characters, who are currently tagged as "Bio-Mimetic Android Infestation Removal Corps" with exactly the same naming scheme, created mostly minutes apart but whose passwords aren't shared on the page linked above. Whether they're controlled by the same player or not is of course, speculative at best from my perspective, but I'm sure you'll be inclined towards looking into it as currently their only purpose seems to be advertising the wiki page (read:promoting shared accounts/zerging on the stats page.) And again, for your convenience, here are their profiles:

Since the only means of co-ordination for any of these characters seems to be their wiki talk (which is completely bereft of any chat, save some jibberish from Axe Hack,) or zerging, they can't really be classified as a group, might also want to delete the page outright in the wake, but some kind wiki sysop/s who delights in torturing themselves with bureaucracy can probably deal with all of that, or you know, you could simply wipe it and save us all the trouble. Whatever works.

Warmest Regards,

--Amber Waves of Pain 12:45, 30 January 2012 (UTC)

Don't worry about my random chatter on that talk page. I was merely pointing out the original password character (password, password, as everyone should know about by now...). It really was just random gibberish. As for IP addresses, if I recall, every IP address any given character logs into is logged, and stays logged forever, and as such, anyone stupid enough to log into them can't cross paths with them in-game with their other characters, even if they just unknowingly get too close (which makes me wonder why anyone would log into the first list and change the profile descriptions to what it is now). As it stands, they are still a group (since they are listed on the stats page, even if it's a zerg group), and as such, we SysOps (nor anyone else, for that matter) can't edit any details on that page, unless Kevan himself authorizes us to get rid of certain details. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 14:01, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
