External Image Links

Thanks for your help:

"To link to an image you just use this format Image:Name of Image. - Vantar 06:04, 26 August 2007 (BST)"

Thing is, that doesn't seem to work. It works fine for internal links, but not for external ones. I always ends up looking exactly like what you see up there: a link, but the image doesn't load. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, but I just can't seem to find any help that tells me how to do correctly. I'll continue digging and maybe I can "reverse engineer" some code somewhere... Cheers... --WanYao 21:19, 26 August 2007 (BST)

Alphabetizing

When you add or modify building pages that begins with "The" or "Club", it'd be helpful if you set up the categories so they come up properly on the category pages like Museum Category Page and the suburbs pages. The Hibbert Museum is an example. Thanks for fleshing out the wiki! --Tekka Maki 16:26, 2 May 2007 (BST)

I saw your change to The Ive Museum and the category info was still not quite right. If you put the "The" at the beginning, it will show up under "T" instead of "I". You can look at my change to see what I mean. --Tekka Maki 18:45, 3 May 2007 (BST)
Yeah sorry about that, I had been dropping the sort key in categorizes such as Museums and Buildings for awhile, mostly because all the pages in those categories start with "The" so they will all be in alphabetical order anyway just all in the T section of the Category. As for the Ive museum, simple copy paste error I overlooked thanks for catching it, just out of curiosity why are you adding ",the" at the end of the category labels with the way that the buildings are all named you don't really need it. - Vantar 20:36, 3 May 2007 (BST)
I don't think it matters for the building pages but on the suburb pages, there could be a The Something Building and Club Something, and then it would be useful. It's not a big thing either way but it doesn't hurt to put in the extra characters. --Tekka Maki 19:45, 4 May 2007 (BST)

Uhh..Why?

Why are you creating pages, adding the templates, and leaving them? Aren't you supposed to finish them?--User:Axe27/Sig 20:38, 6 May 2007 (BST)

Right now I'm going thought the uncreated pages on List of Museums, I'm adding the location block and category information, a number of the people who collect the museum data have a tendency of leaving that stuff out when they are putting in the information about the museum type and until something major happens at these locations there is not much more to add about them - Vantar 20:49, 6 May 2007 (BST)
Alright,Thanks. --User:Axe27/Sig 20:56, 6 May 2007 (BST)

Fethed Computer

It's probably your power supply or your motherboard. Power supplies are cheap but tricky to put it, sorta, while you have to be very careful about replacing your motherboard. You should get the exact same model, hard with a 7 year old computer, or make sure all your stuff, especially your processor, will work with a new model you find. Also, replacing one is time-consuming and complicated. Of course, I only know this because of my power problems. Otherwise I wouldn't give a feth and thus know nothing. Stupid computers.--Lachryma 07:00, 13 May 2007 (BST)

Going only on the fact that it was been over 3 hours since my computer's last hissy fit I think I've fixed it, turns out it was a corrupt copy of Rainbow Six that was causing the shutdowns. If it happens again I'll look into power supplies. Thanks for your help, and grammartization of the safehouse supporter template. - Vantar 08:45, 13 May 2007 (BST)

Location Blocks

It's not pretty, but I hope it helps. If you notice a "***FILL IN***" let me know at what location that it occured at so I can fix it up. There are *alot* of variation on street titles (Grove, Plaza ect) and so I don't know if I got them all. Of course you may need to fill in the data yourself around special buildings, but for the most part it should make your life easier. Also let me know if there is anything that needs to be corrected (eg a School labled as a Street =P) - If Jedaz = 12:19, 18 July 2007 (BST) then pi = 3

WOW! This this rocks! You easily have saved my a few months of work with that thing. No major problems that I've found so far, but it dosen't seam to like generic locations like Factory 16,3. It enters it a factory(16,3) instead of a factory but even with that I can make a fully usable location block in under 30 seconds now.- Vantar 13:16, 18 July 2007 (BST)
Ah, thats easily fixable, that issue mainly came about because of my lack of knowledge about how the location blocks were done. Anyway before it was reporting a factory as just a factory which was less helpful. I'm glad that it helps so much. I'll let you know when I fix that, but for now, I'm going to sleep. - If Jedaz = 13:26, 18 July 2007 (BST) then pi = 3
Farn excellent. A few minor tune ups needed (Dept => Department and St => St. for eg), but too easy! We'll get finished with the location blocks yet! -- boxy T Nuts2U DA 14:06, 18 July 2007 (BST)
Small bug with the categories, It adds an extra S to Arms to created the Category Armss and Categories that end in y get misspelled (Factorys instead of Factories), but still I just did half a suburb in 15 minutes. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Vantar (talkcontribs) at an unknown time.
Ah, ok then, well thats solved now. What are the generic locations anyway? At the moment I've got Carpark, Factory, Junkyard, Wasteland, and Cemetery, are there any others that I missed? If you notice any more abbreviations let me know so I can fix it up. - If Jedaz = 03:44, 19 July 2007 (BST) then pi = 3
Warehouses too. Cathedrals gives a ***FILL THIS*** message in the color section, I think it should be substituted for "church" -- boxy T Nuts2U DA 04:26, 19 July 2007 (BST)
Alrighty, I've got those as well. Let me know if I missed anything else. By the way do we want to categorise the pages by suburb and building type as well eg ? - If Jedaz = 06:46, 19 July 2007 (BST) then pi = 3
That's a no to Dakerstown Warehouses Jed. The Category:Police Depts still needs to be changed to Category:Police Departments. Can we get some headers put in too, something like this (although take out the barricade policy and perhaps the current status, as it's not needed for empty blocks) -- boxy T Nuts2U DA 07:18, 19 July 2007 (BST)
Alright. I must have missed about the category of Police Departments, but thats fixed now. The headers are there now as well. Let me know if it needs changing. - If Jedaz = 07:28, 19 July 2007 (BST) then pi = 3
Coolio. I'd put a subst: in on the PAGENAME, and make it a second level (rather than 4th level) header. Then it's pretty much a straight cut'n'paste anyone can do! Bravo :) -- boxy T Nuts2U DA 07:32, 19 July 2007 (BST)
Alright, done. I don't know how I accidently got a level 4 header, but I did =P Anyway I'm just putting in a function so that it has the other two headers (Barricade Policy and Current Status) for buildings and not streets, carparks, ect. - If Jedaz = 07:41, 19 July 2007 (BST) then pi = 3

Yer a legend Jedaz :) Not a single red link in the Police Department category now thanks to this! -- boxy T Nuts2U DA 07:45, 19 July 2007 (BST)

Heh, thats good to hear. Anyway I just updated it again so that it recognize buildings (aka, the locations that can be barricaded) and give them the additional headers. - If Jedaz = 07:51, 19 July 2007 (BST) then pi = 3

Deleting Pages on the Wiki

Hi, I thought I'd come here to continue the discussion on my page without clogging up the deletions page, and I didn't really know where else might be a good place to discuss this. I really just have two questions: first, how did my page end up on the "Special:Uncategorizedpages" page? Is that some kind of spider or bot that goes around and collects pages with only 1 link to them or something? Just wondering, since I obviously never linked it there. And second: why does this really matter? I mean, why is it important that a page be properly filed and categorized and not just "shoved into a filling cabinet," as you say? To me a wiki is like the net itself: tons and tons of uncategorized random stuff that just needs a good search engine to get around in. I mean, it seems like it would take dozens of people hours a day to monitor and remove all the garbage that gets spewed into a wiki, and it'd be a pretty thankless, never-ending job. Why not just ignore it and make your wiki smart enough to handle it? Like my page, for instance. What could it possibly be hurting, just sitting out there by itself? I mean, sure the name of the page would be taken if anyone else wanted to use it, but how many other people are honestly going to want to grab that namespace? What else does it possibly damage? Is this just organization for the sake of being organized? Don't get me wrong; I'm not trying to defend a position - just honestly asking a question here. And as for the page in question, I'll still be happy to move it - just let me know when and I'll go ahead and do it (especially since now I know better how to do things like that than when I originally made the page). Or if I need to leave it and let someone else move it, I can do that, too. Just let me know. --evilbob 19:34, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

The Specialpages are lists that the wiki automatically compiles. Special:Uncategorizedpages is made up of all the pages without a category. In order to be useful to users the wiki can not just be random uncategorized stuff for two reason. First the search function sucks and second the wiki is meant to serve as a guidebook to the game so if you know what type of information you are looking for you know where to look with out needing the search function.
As for having the wiki categorize itself, it can't be done be done to the same level of accuracy as a human. On the average day 5-7 new page are created without categorizes and I categorizes 10+ pages and it is as you said a pretty thankless, never-ending job (thats why I only do 10 a day, 7 months ago I was doing a 100 a day). Left alone without a category you page would not cause the wiki to explode or do any other damage but the problem is it won't be left alone, it will be joined by lots of other uncategorized pages and after awhile those pages cause problems (such as masking spam pages, page duplication, and the odd name space disputes). This isn't really "organization for the sake of being organized" but more of "organization because it works slightly better than disorganization".
The page will either be moved or deleted in around 12 days, judging by the current votes it has I would say it will be moved and not deleted. There is a special way of moving pages that leave the page history intact that can only be done by Sysops, so you can just leave it alone and it will be moved for you - Vantar 04:41, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

That note...

NIV

I can link you to some good resources if you need it- but long story short, KJV is the ONLY true English translation of the Bible. All others have satanic implications; for instance, NIV refers to Jesus as god's "SERVANT", not His "SON" in several locations. One moment and I'll ahve those resources.  Nalikill  TALK  E!  W!  M!  USAI  03:39, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Don't attack the validity of the source- that's the BIGGEST flashing indicator of a weak mind- refute the points.  Nalikill  TALK  E!  W!  M!  USAI  00:42, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
Ok nutjob, go join your friends causing misery on earth waiting for the rapture to slaughter us evil heathens/heretics. You ever wonder why suicide bombers do what they do? LOOK IN THE MIRROR, YOU ARE THE SAME. - Pardus 23:40, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
Actually sometimes attacking the validity of the source is the best course of action to take, especially when it's, say, Fox News, for example. But it really doesn't help that the source you use contains examples of exactly what you are criticizing him for. Even then, comparing the Catholic church to Stalin and Hitler, and the inquisition to the holocaust kinda destroys claims of sanity, especially when they encourage the prosecution of not only other religions but transgendered people. When you talk about religion it should be because you believe, not because you want to use it as a sword to insult and mock other's beliefs.--Karekmaps?! 01:43, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
The KJV is flawed. One reason is because it retains the Apocrypha. --Pavluk A! E! 18:37, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
No, it keeps them... IN THE MIDDLE.... AS HISTORICAL REFERENCE, clearly marking them as apocrypha.  Nalikill  TALK  E!  W!  M!  USAI  00:42, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
I used NIV because it was the default bible on the bible search tool I was using, the pros and cons of the KJV are about the same as any other translation (anything coming from Aramaic to English by way of Greek will have translation errors -fact of life) so from now on if I need to use any scripture references I'm using Wyclif version and thats final- Vantar 19:00, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
KJV is the only valid translation in english. I have yet to hear you refute any of the points raised on that page.  Nalikill  TALK  E!  W!  M!  USAI  00:42, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
The webite also makes the assertation that the KJV in English is the only inspired Word of God available today. I honestly find it ridiculous. Do you believe in a God that would oppose the translation of his book into languages other than English? That'd be a pretty xenophobic God. --Pavluk A! E! 20:41, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
The whole virgin birth thing was one doozy of a translation error that came by way of greek. --The Grimch U! E! WAT! 19:02, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
Jesus IS God incarnate, he was born of a virgin birth, but the Virgin Mary ISN'T holy, nor did she remain a virgin. And I say to you three things, that will happen before it's all over. I pray that you repent when you hear of them coming to pass in the future.
1. Damascus shall be destroyed It shall either be completely leveled, or so much of its population devastated that no one shall call it a city ever again.
2. The Jewish Temple shall be rebuilt I called it. Trust me, it will happen.
3. An army of 200 million men shall attack Israel Never been an army that large in the history of history, but there will be one- and it will attack israel.

The worst location ever: Pridmore Way School

Erm, how should this be blocked? I'm thinking that making this into a disambiguation might work, but the content applies to both. Duplicate the content on both new locations or get rid of it? --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 21:50, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

I was thinking of moving the page that is there to somewhere else and making Pridmore Way School into a disambig linking to Pridmore Way School 10,96 & Pridmore Way School 13,96 but that ran into the problem of where to move the current content to. Its too developed to warrant deletion and it is relevant enough and of high enough quality to be kept in the main name space.- Vantar 22:01, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
Two location blocks? That template would have to be mangled to get a left and right alignment.--  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 22:09, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

Ah crap...Yeah your right, though technically i didn't make the mistake I just spread it around more, i copy/pasted the category name straight from the Category Tree and didn't bother to proofread it first. Nice catch, I'm glad you got it before I did more- Vantar 04:10, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Not really Location images could be handled a little better but thats about it - Vantar 04:55, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
I suppose you're right. Location images should probably just be: Location images. Also, what if a character plays both "Outlaw" and "Zombie" equally? Do we incorporate both categories? Weapons and equipment should probably be combined to make: Items. Yes, no, maybe? --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 05:03, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
No, Maybe, No. There will some day be ~10,000 images in Location images so if you are looking for a certain image some sub cats are a must, I just don't like weeding out TRps and non TRps. I have no clue what the outlaw category is to be used for, how do we tell a Pk character art from civilain art, its the zombie apocalypse everyone has guns and crazed look in their eye.as for equipment you find there are a lot of images of guns and weapons are most likely what people will be looking for so were are making if easy to browse- Vantar 05:18, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Mmkay. So keep it as is unless something turns up?--  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 17:15, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
THat been my plan so far - Vantar 17:17, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
I'm assuming that any art used solely for PKer groups would be considered to be in the outlaw category. I really like that category name too. It fits quite well. --Akule School's in session. 19:11, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Location pages

I've noticed how some locations have their own pages (like Freake Grove) and some are part of a grouped page, such as Gatley Drive. Should all related locations in a suburb (eg. streets) share a suburb block type page, or should they have their own individual page? I am just cleaning up some wiki pages in the NW area (Dakerstown, Jensentown...) and need to know what policy I should adhere to, especially since a lot of the links in the 3x3 map on location pages are broken (see: Seamour Crescent) due to the variation in styles from suburb to suburb. Vandal Account/IP address block?

I recently got a message on the wiki warning me about "vandalism". On trying to access your page or edit my own, I got a message saying my IP was blocked because a user, "lesantdavida" used my IP as a vandal account. Anything that happened either before the outbreak or involves events that clearly never happened get placed into Category:Fiction. Since boxy isn't around, could you look into this request? Apparently this guy would like some sysop action getting those images taken down in a prompt manner. --Akule Maker of fine, hand-crafted UDWiki sass since 2006 -- Akule School's back in session™ 22:43, 15 April 2008 (BST)

If you read my post here you'll see that I found precedent for people to be vandal banned for harassment involving names. Jedaz says it best here. --Akule Maker of fine, hand-crafted UDWiki sass since 2006 -- Akule School's back in session™ 00:32, 16 April 2008 (BST)
You may have a case, it is not a perfect comparison to the current issue but it is close enough. If Marty takes his case to A/VB it will get heard (but boxy's talk page is not a/vb)- Vantar 00:42, 16 April 2008 (BST)
Oh, I know. He wanted to get help from boxy or another sysop. So I figured I'd let you talk to him since you are one and he's ignoring the discussion, thus making marty more desperate for help. I'll get the ball rolling if you would prefer to keep away from this with a ten foot pole. --Akule Maker of fine, hand-crafted UDWiki sass since 2006 -- Akule School's back in session™ 00:47, 16 April 2008 (BST)
It is not that I don't want to get involved it is that there is not much more I can tell him other then take it to arbys or A/VB and that has been said a few times now. The biggest problem is in terms of game flavor there would be insults flying between opposing sides so the case that would need to be made is what has been said/drawn crosses the line and I am not sure if it really has in this case or not (still digging though) - Vantar 00:55, 16 April 2008 (BST)
Oh, I figured that the whole thing would have to be investigated and if both sides (or just Marty) want to be left alone it would have to be A/Aed, but there is a point where a line is crossed where we have to say "This isn't a forum and this is a bad faith edit." I think those pictures probably cross that line, don't you? --Akule Maker of fine, hand-crafted UDWiki sass since 2006 -- Akule School's back in session™ 01:00, 16 April 2008 (BST)
I think a few may be crossing it and few aren't but figuring out which ones are will be a bitch of a precedent so I would not expect a quick ruling ( and I wouldn't bet against a A/M case getting started before it's all said and done) - Vantar 01:05, 16 April 2008 (BST)
To begin with, I'd look at the ones that are attributing fictional quotes to Marty, as those would fall under impersonation. --Akule Maker of fine, hand-crafted UDWiki sass since 2006 -- Akule School's back in session™ 01:16, 16 April 2008 (BST)
Impersonation would be a stretch (not inconceivable but a stretch) the big problem is you have to prove they are talking about Marty Banks (the user) and not Marty Banks (the fictional character). - Vantar 01:30, 16 April 2008 (BST)
I imagine they are since they are quoting him on their group talk page and posting them for public view here. --Akule Maker of fine, hand-crafted UDWiki sass since 2006 -- Akule School's back in session™ 01:36, 16 April 2008 (BST)
Not sure if I should be chiming in here, but a parody image with a word balloon is pretty clearly meant as an insult, rather than any sort of attempt at misdirection or impersonation. The Malton Globetrotters#31 - TastyNougat TMG 23:19, 18 April 2008 (BST)
Since the art work is derived from Marty's character art they would be impersonating the fictional character not the user, at least thats how I see it- Vantar 01:49, 16 April 2008 (BST)
True, but since Marty controls the character and the character's speech, wouldn't they in fact be pretending that he said it, thus impersonating him? --Akule Maker of fine, hand-crafted UDWiki sass since 2006 -- Akule School's back in session™ 01:52, 16 April 2008 (BST)
No, character likeness are not protected under the wiki's impersonations rules (and if this case ends up setting that precedent I call dibs on "a non-descript survivor") I know a few Malton chronicles stories that involved characters not controlled by the author, and this is more or less the same type of thing - Vantar 01:59, 16 April 2008 (BST)
I didn't realize that. So just the harassment then. --Akule Maker of fine, hand-crafted UDWiki sass since 2006 -- Akule School's back in session™ 02:03, 16 April 2008 (BST)
Yes but you have the same problem, are they harassing the User or the Character. The bar for Character harassment is much higher, I would look at some of the earlier Finis Valorum stuff for a precedent. Of course if at any point Marty just asked them to lay off a little and they ignored it you would have a decent bad faith case there. Them not respecting the legal threats on boxy's talk page is not a good example of this, you need him to ask them nicely and directly to have their ignoring it be considered bad faith - Vantar 02:21, 16 April 2008 (BST)
It's clearly harassing the player, and it looks like he wants it to stop. --Akule Maker of fine, hand-crafted UDWiki sass since 2006 -- Akule School's back in session™ 02:30, 16 April 2008 (BST)
If they do any more then yes thats almost unquestionably bad faith but since they have have been primarily making fun of the character you are going to have a hard time proofing that harassment of the user was indented, making fun a of a group or a character is allowed (think about all the anti-Big Bash stuff there has been) to prove harassment you need to be able to establish that they were continuing mocking him after they knew he was taking their tauts personally. Also since they are not responsible for tracking Marty every comment his complaints on boxy's and kevan's talk page doesn't count as letting them know he was offended until they commented on it and mocking his legal threats isn't harassment since he may not be in a position to make good on them, so you would need new material to emerge to get the harassment call. (of course Marty may have asked them to lay off earlier already, I haven't looked that far back yet,if he has then harassment would be relatively easy to prove) - Vantar 02:49, 16 April 2008 (BST)

Umm...your welcome. I kinda always thought you had some issue with me (I think all of our past interaction have ended in personal attacks) so your gratitude honestly surprises me here. Thank you - Vantar 02:58, 7 June 2008 (BST)

Being a bureaucrat

If you don't mind me asking, what was it that you didn't like about the role? --Toejam 04:07, 7 June 2008 (BST)

There was a few things but the biggest thing was the "Spirit of the Rules vs. Wording of the Rules" fight that kept breaking out. For the first part of my term I was too busy with categories to really get involved with the wiki politics then the Grim A/VB happened. What the archive doesn't include is the 10 straight hours that me and Grim spent in IRC arguing our opposing view points. The entire case was ugly form the start and it never has really been resolved. When the issue resurfaced I tried to resolve the issue but Grim took my ruling as an attack on him instead of the request for compromise I meant it to be. In later misconduct cases things not much would change and around the same time there was an influx of promotion bids so, to me at least, it looked like certain users were trying to establish a controlling majority over misconduct rulings. That mixed with rather baseless accusations of being part of an "old boys club" made me lose all desire to remain a bureaucrat.- Vantar 08:46, 7 June 2008 (BST)
Thanks for the (well-considered) answer. There certainly is a lot of pointless conflict around this wiki. It's alright when it's just polite intellectual dissension (in fact that sort of conflict is probably healthy) but when it gets into people speaking to each other to antagonise them, that's horrible. Sometimes I think it would be nice if each time there was a disagreement, like exact wording vs spirit of rules, the wiki sub-divided into two and people went to whichever group they wanted. It'd be like that saying that people get the government they deserve, and if someone had ridiculous views they couldn't impose them on others. By the way, I'm a bit late but good work on the image categorisation project. --Toejam 02:06, 12 June 2008 (BST)
Thanks but the my contributions to image categorization were minimal at best. Boxy championed the idea and Nubis deserves a lot of the credit, he has categorized well beyond what I have done.- Vantar 02:19, 12 June 2008 (BST)
Thank you. Rosslessness and I worked very hard on that. I hope in the future that a sysop team eventually gets created that is more wiki oriented than policy directed. It's always a shame to see people that actually used to enjoy doing work and contributing leave. --– Nubis NWO 03:51, 12 June 2008 (BST)

Not really, I lurk on occasion but mostly to borrow formatting for other wikis, all my characters have idled out in game, and I have lost interest in wiki politics and mass categorization so without a project I feel like working on I have more or less drifted away. - Vantar 05:24, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Yes, but as far as I know those are all just merged page, the location blocks are created, they just need to be broken down into individual pages, for some of the streets in Reganbank I had to actually fill out the location block template. - Vantar 15:09, 11 June 2010 (BST)
