The Emergency Broadcast System, or EBS, is a special system that allows transmission in the otherwise restricted military frequency 25.92MHz. It is located in The Coram Building, an office building in Lukinswood.

Creation

As can be seen by searching for Emergency Broadcast System on the wiki, there have been many suggestions involving an Emergency Broadcast System for Malton. The system was implemented during the July 3rd, 2009 game updates which took place on Urban Dead's fourth birthday.

The relevant announcement is as follows:

  • The military have lifted the block on secure radio transmissions from the city's two forts (25.97MHz and 25.98MHz). There are also rumours of an old emergency broadcast system hidden in an office building in Malton, broadcasting on 25.92MHz; searching the correct building will reveal it.

Operation

To transmit on 25.92MHz, the building must contain a generator, that is fueled. Additionally it must also contain a radio transmitter whose frequency must then be set to 25.92MHz.

Internal description when the building lacks power:

You are inside the Coram Building. A side room contains the city's emergency broadcast system. Its lights and readouts are dark.

Internal description when the building is powered, but lacks a radio transmitter (please complete):

You are inside the Coram Building. A side room contains the city's emergency broadcast system.

Internal description when the building is powered, with an operational transmitter:

You are inside the Coram Building. A side room contains the city's emergency broadcast system. A radio transmitter is plugged into it, and green lights glow on the panel.

Internal description when the building is powered, with an operational transmitter set to a frequency other than 25.92MHz:

You are inside the Coram Building. A side room contains the city's emergency broadcast system. A radio transmitter is plugged into it. An LCD display reads "please retune to 25.92".

Flavour text when transmitting on this frequency:

You broadcast "<a message>" on 25.92 MHz, the emergency broadcast frequency.

History

Discovery

The EBS was discovered the same day (July 3rd) by one of The Rooster's characters. Searching the building revealed the side room and also a powered down radio transmitter. Zombie attacks later destroyed the transmitter. The building was quickly recaptured and powered, but a new transmitter was needed.

First Transmission

A third-party log of the first transmission the EBS.

The EBS received a new transmitter in time to make the first transmission, a broadcast made by a player referring to themselves as "Skip" on July 20th. The broadcast reads as follows:

25.92 MHz "Greetings, this is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System."

25.92 MHz "Is anyone out there? Anyone at all? Am I alone in the world?"

25.92 MHz "If anyone out there is listening, good luck. -Skip"

Skip has been revealed to be Skip O'Fooer. Several users, including Sara Michaels, were present for the maiden transmission. Skip's own record of the event is contained here

Tansmedia

On July 13th, 2010 The EBS twitter account was created as an extension of The Emergency Broadcast System.

Maintenance

Several players now actively protect the EBS, most notably the CORAM group. Being a high profile target, The Coram Building is almost always under attack from zombies.
