The structure of the Free Militia is unlike anything in Malton. It seeks to allow for the maximum freedom of action among members while still having the means to address large threats.

Theory

The Free Militia seeks to retain the strengths of small groups while still having the power of a large organization. As such it is structured to allow for small groups to work more or less as needed but still able and willing to support one another. Towards that end we have a simple chain of command to make coordination easier as well as the division of branch of service: Home Guard and the Rangers.

There are ranks maintained, but each has a specific job and the ranks above that of Captain serve the purpose of ease of coordination between units.

Branches of Service

Home Guard

The Home Guard are local units that attach themselves to suburbs. They serve to keep their homes and neighborhoods safe from the zombie hordes as well as from roaming PKers. The various Home Guard units may use whatever organizational or leadership structure they wish with only four requests:

  • 1. Kill zombies and PKers
  • 2. Assist other Home Guard units when requested by the regional Colonel
  • 3. Declare themselves to be of the Free Militia
  • 4. Adhere to all policies that apply to the Free Militia as a whole

Past that they conduct diplomacy and work as any other group would and do as they see needed for the purposes of the group.

Forming the Home Guard

Home Guard units take form in one of two manners.

The first is commissioning a new unit. This takes place if a new Militia member wants to form a new unit in the suburb they live in and there are no other units around or they wish to strike out on their own and take charge. The only restriction on where a Home Guard unit can be commissioned is so long as there is not already a Home Guard unit in said suburb. These units are assisted in creation by the regional Colonel.

The second is enlisting an already existing group. Any group may join the Free Militia if they so desire and are subordinated to their new commander and need to change their group name. Past that the new group may carry on as it did before, even retaining its old name as the new unit name.

Under no circumstances will there ever be more than one Home Guard unit attached to a particular suburb. For example, if you wanted to form a new Home Guard unit in New Arkham and there already was a unit attached to New Arkham you would not be allowed to do so. This is designed to prevent potential conflicts in suburbs over command as well as giving our people the means to spread out.

Rangers

Rangers are those who feel less attached to any one place and instead desire to move around to wherever threats to survivors may be. Rangers follow the same requests as those of the Home Guard but past that like the Home Guard work as their own independent groups.

Forming a Ranger Unit

Ranger units take form in one of two manners.

The first is commissioning a new unit. This takes place if a new Militia member wants to form a new unit in the suburb they live in and there are no other units around or they wish to strike out on their own and take charge. These units are assisted in creation by the Ranger Colonel.

The second is enlisting an already existing group. Any group may join the Free Militia if they so desire and are subordinated to their new commander and need to change their group name. Past that the new group may carry on as it did before, even retaining its old name as the new unit name.

Ranks

Brigadier General

A special office that is held by election for extraordinary emergencies with a term of one month, renewed by vote of the five colonels. Only activated in times of extreme crisis as the Brigadier General has the means to mobilize the whole of the Free Militia and, like Colonels, dictate threat levels and priority regions as needed. These commands override those of any Colonel.

Colonel

Elected by all the Home Guard unit commanders within a region, there are five Colonels in the Free Militia each with the same purpose, four of which are regional one of which is the Ranger Colonel. All five Colonels serve as the central leadership of the Free Militia and it is these officers who elect the Brigadier General in times of extraordinary need. Each Colonel is elected by simple majority of a vote of all the unit commanders who would serve as their subordinates. Upon election Colonels are detached from their previous unit to prevent any possible excess attachment between the new Colonel and their old unit so they may properly look to the whole of their region as opposed to the single suburb they were once assigned to.

All Colonels have two main jobs. The first is to coordinate the various units under them during times of crisis, Colonels as such have the power to declare the priority of a suburb's defense, the higher the priority the more units will be asked to intervene. The second job of a Colonel is to assist in the creation of new units in their area of command as the new Captain needs it.

Ranger Colonel

The Ranger Colonel is, like regular Colonels, elected by the various Ranger unit commanders. Beyond that the Ranger Colonel serves in a similar fashion as a regular Colonel with the sole exception that they are not tied to any specific region but instead command the freewheeling Rangers. Unlike Home Guard Colonels who are severed from any unit to ensure objectivity, the Ranger Colonel remains with their unit as Rangers are not attached to any one place thus making the risk of attachment to any location far less likely than that of a Home Guard Colonel.

Lieutenant Colonel

These individuals are appointed by their Colonel and serve as a second in command as well as to step in when the Colonel is unavailable. Home Guard Lt. Colonels are, like Home Guard Colonels, detached from their old unit upon appointment. The Ranger Lt. Colonel, like the Ranger Colonel, remains with their unit.

Captain

Captains are the various unit commanders, be they Rangers or Home Guard. These capable survivors run their groups as they see fit and may not be called Captain depending on the unit. Regardless of the name the job is the same: to lead the various units that make up the Free Militia.

Lieutenant

Second in command to a Captain and their stand in should their Captain be unavailable, this is the only requirement on any unit is that they have an established and known second in command along with the three requests.
