Gentles Square

Description

The name Gentles Square (short for Gentleman's Square) is an ironic moniker given to the place by the inhabitants of the working-class Gibsonton. The block was home to a number of more upscale businesses started by a wealthy philanthropist family in an attempt at 'urban renewal' (or, as seen by the locals, gentrification). The idea was that the location near two railroad stations, a museum, and a pub would make the perfect place for . These were popular with the small number of young art school types who lived in the suburb for the low rent, but ultimately failed to attract the patronage of the locals, and so went under, leaving the square largely vacant.
