What's do? (Especially the Nosubst part)--Toejam 18:45, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

That's the portion that goes into your preferences. The "SUBST:Nosubst" forces the wiki to leave the signature page as a pseudo-template (contained within your userspace) instead of adding all the text in the page as your signature, defeating the whole purpose. Did that make any sense? --Darth Sensitive Talk W! 22:49, 22 January 2007 (UTC)
Pointless in the extreme, the wiki already forces the Subst: if a template is in your sig space on preferences, and the whole purpose of the Nosubst, as it is not explained above, is basically including whatever is after it between and tags. Basically it makes it so that the Substitution call(Subst:) goes through another page, and since Susbt: only calls one page's code, specifically whatever is being Subst:'ed() Nosubst makes it's page code RandomTemplate, Which is exactly what gets Subst:'ed onto the page. Little unclear but basically what Subst: does is instead of linking like a template it actually adds the template's content code to the page with the Subst: call. Anyway, I've now modified the page to remove the unneeded Subst:, and really we probably shouldn't be telling people to do this, or even how to do this, templated sigs have problems and it's set up to auto-Subst: for a reason.--Karekmaps?! 10:25, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Ah! The date!

Just a minor problem, for some reason it keeps putting the date underneath my sig --• LtZurSee slapped your nose with a newspaper for a heal from CORAM (0 seconds ago)AU 04:05, 8 August 2008 (BST)

Thanks

Mines doing that too.Moodie  Talk  Contributions16:59 29 May 2011 (BST)
And the the actual template is acting weird. This is what I have in my Nickname: (BST) and this is what I have in my subpage:

I'm pretty sure you don't need anything else in the nickname field beyond the sig template - I've not got any date-related code at all in there and my timestamps come through grand. Try it without the time magic words in it. Nothing to be done! 19:00, 29 May 2011 (BST)
This how how it shows up now --> --Moodie  Talk  Contributions 05:44, 30 May 2011 (BST)
I put the whole thing in a span class tag rather than a wiki table and it seems to have done the trick. ~Vsig.png 14:24, 30 May 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. I'm newer to the wiki so i haven't had much experiance with it. I was going to play with span class tagging next if I hadn't gotten a response. Thanks again!

I've got some more that you might want to add to this page, located here. Let me know on my talk page if any of it is good enough for use. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 05:46, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

I personally feel it isn't needed - I'm against making it too easy for people to make their signatures annoying... but if you want to add it, it's a community page, so go for it. --Darth Sensitive Talk W! 19:20, 11 March 2007 (UTC)
Well, I find so many people asking me or other users on how to create a custom signature. I thought it best and easiest to point them to a page. If they violate the policy, then they get a dealing with. --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 00:36, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

For some reason, my new sig displays improperly.

Here's what it looks like: --Hhal 16:45, 26 August 2007 (BST)

Why am I seeing this weird little box that contains the date and time of my post?

Replied on user talk page. --  T   15:52, 27 August 2007 (BST)
I'm going to add this to a new section for common signature editing problems. It's due to an unclosed HTML tag, usually a <Span> tag. Forces the new code to render as if it were starting on a new line so if the time and date wasn't part of the sig template it will cause issues.--Karekmaps?! 10:32, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
Making a sig was a huge pain in the butt. Also, there are missing steps in the "how to" section--Airborne88Zzz1.JPGT|ZC|MI|E! 21:45, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
Specifically?--Karekmaps?! 23:15, 9 March 2008 (UTC)
I <3 my Sig. --Secruss|Yak|Brahnz!|CGR|PKA|800px-Flag of the United States.svg.png|EMLN|Templates|RRF|RFTM|Crap|WHOZ|Evil3.gif|MU|GN|C2008|Chippy.gif|21:35, 23 June 2008 (BST)

Two Things of Note

Do Not Include things in <noinclude></noinclude> tags in templated sigs It makes pages with multiple inclusions of your sig break faster because stuff in <noinclude></noinclude> tags is included in the template/page inclusions file size and templates on pages break when they reach a preset total size. --Karekmaps?! 02:00, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Also, a thing to look out for, spaces. Whenever possible remove spaces from your sig and replace them with the ASCII code &nbsp; It makes it so that the text won't auto-wrap. Saving it from placing half your sig on a different line as is currently the case with some popular use sigs.--Karekmaps?! 02:02, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

You're welcome to fix my sig then if you like ;) --Ducis DuxSlothTalk 01:22, 8 June 2008 (BST)

Making it work...

I have designed a reasonable signature here: User:Zig13/signature which is fine (exept for the date and time not changing) but I am having trouble making it my default signature. I have tried the recomended line of code but it comes out with this: --Zig13User:Zig13/Signature 08:32, 27 April 2008 (BST) Any help apreciated! Zig13

If you want the time to display, don't use a templated sig. Instead place the coding into the nickname text box in your preferences. The code I use to get my time to display is (BST). Local time is needed, because the servers are on a different time (at least some of the time... it may depend on daylight saving and the like). Instead of using ~~~~ I also use only 3 ~... ie ~~~ to sign (otherwise I get the time doubled up) -- boxy talki 08:56 27 April 2008 (BST)
Thanks. I have removed the time codes from the signature page but what code must I put in the nickname box to get it to work? Anyone? Zig13 It looks like this now: --Zig13User:Zig13/Signature 09:20, 27 April 2008 (BST)
Just put in and make sure that the raw signature checkbox is ticked, and it should work -- boxy talki 09:28 27 April 2008 (BST) Edit: changed the square brackets to template brackets, d'oh 09:57, 27 April 2008 (BST)
It now does this: --User:Zig13/signature 09:38, 27 April 2008 (BST)
I added the code directly to the nickname box and now I get: Zig13 - 09:42 on the 27th of April 2008 (BST) . Thankyou!
Your date isn't going to change that way -- boxy talki 09:57 27 April 2008 (BST)

Put this in your nickname textbox, Zig. <span style="color:DodgerBlue"> (BST)</span>. Then take the date off your sig page, and only use 3 ~ instead of 4 to sign -- boxy talki 10:10 27 April 2008 (BST)

Or, instead of doing that which can cause the times to be off from the server times and thus useless during part of the year, just use five ~, cause it does the same basic thing, at least from the user perspective.--Karekmaps?! 10:17, 27 April 2008 (BST)
He wants the the date coloured, and local time is server time (what the 5 ~ gives) -- boxy talki 10:21 27 April 2008 (BST)
You can color either. --Karekmaps?! 10:24, 27 April 2008 (BST)
The only way I've found of getting the 5 ~ to work in a sig is to includeonly the middle ~ and then subst the sig in the nickname box. Is that what you're suggesting? -- boxy talki 10:30 27 April 2008 (BST)
I don't know the limitations of what can be done while making a sig beyond what I checked up when revamping this article. Although it would be strange if the ~ being substituted happened on preferences too. Ignoring that, why is the timestamp in the link/color anyway?--Karekmaps?! 10:34, 27 April 2008 (BST)
If you put 5 ~ on your sig page it will subst for the current date as soon as you save the sig (always giving that date whenever included). If zig wants his date coloured the same as his sig link, then he should use the code I gave above... only put it in his preference instead of on his sig page -- boxy talki 10:43 27 April 2008 (BST)

I currently have: <span style="color:DodgerBlue">Zig13 - // at (BST) </span> in my nickname box and with 3x~ it makes: Zig13 - 27/04/2008 at 11:01(BST) . This is exactly how I wanted it! Thankyou very much people! BTW, what does 'BST' stand for. I use Greenwich Mean Time - is it the same thing?

British standard time (perhaps)? The servers are in Britain apparently. GMT is very close, but doesn't change with daylight saving I guess -- boxy talki 11:25 27 April 2008 (BST)

Statistic

This google search finds about 180 users with a signature page. That's a very small chunk out of the 30,000 registered users. --Toejam 19:41, 25 October 2008 (BST)

That's irrelevant though as those 180 users tend to contribute more than the other 29,000. When they're users like DDR, Boxy, Nubis, AHLG, and Myself who all get something like 500 edits a week that can actually be a very very significant amount. Keep in mind that many of those 180 users probably participate in Suggestions or Suburb news. --Karekmaps?! 19:49, 25 October 2008 (BST)
