Description

The Jotcham: soon to be featured in a silly Dan Brown novel.

A medieval building, with a portico and crenellated roof.

History

One of Malton's oldest banks, Jotcham was originally constructed in the middle ages by the Templars as a treasury after their return from the Holy Land, laden with booty. After being persecuted into near-oblivion, the Templars' treasury was looted and the building bought by Sir Jotcham de la Pegge, a scion of Pegton's founding fathers.

Its fortifications and easily defensible entrance made it a natural choice for conversion into a bank during the mercantilist 17th century, and Sir Jotcham's descendants made large profits as merchant bankers to Malton's sea-going tradesmen.

Business at Jotcham carried on right up until the outbreak, when the bank was trashed once again; however, the intruders found no bullion, only thousands of antiquated documents dating back to the original Templars, which had been secreted in a crypt. These priceless documents were used as toilet paper by the ignorant but hygienic looters, and are now lost to history forever.

Barricade Policy

Jotcham is generally kept extremely heavily barricaded and dark, serving as a refuge for felons and terrified innocents alike.

Current Status

For Future Help, recording a date to the building status is recommended.
