1: It all depends on your starting character, but healing other people would give you enough XP to level up. Of course, if you started off as Military you should kill zombies more.

(5) Surviving in a Ghost Town

2: Try to get Free Running as quickly as possible. It helps.

3: Get Headshot only if you plan on killing a lot of zombies. It punishes them a little, with a +5 AP penalty for them to stand up.
1) Find a pool cue, it has a decent hit ratio without any hand to hand skills, use it to hit someone, and then immediately heal them afterwards for quick XP. The diagnosis skill will allow you to identify people who need healing.

2) The NecroTech Employment skill is good to get early. DNA Extractors are another excellent source of XP.

4: Try not to camp alone in a building as PKers tend to target loners (no witnesses). Also, if the barricades go down, there may not be other people around to help you rebarricade, allowing other zombies to chew on you as you sleep.
3) Don't bother using firearms without at least advanced training. Without the training the hit ratio/AP investment is not worth it.

4) Focus on skills that increase hit ratio's such as the military skills, and skills that reduce day to day AP usage such as lurching gait and ankle grab.

5: When exploring a new area, make a point to remember the locations of all entry points or VSB and below buildings, or else you will run out of AP looking for a safehouse and get stuck sleeping outside.
5) Avoid the first aid skill early in the game. It reduces the possible XP you can earn from each wounded person.

6) Attacking a zombie as a zombie is a method of gaining XP while dead.
6: Observe all Urban Dead culture and trends, before you go do something like shoot a zed in a cemetery.

7: New player? Stay off the streets, always leave yourself at least 10AP to get back to a safe house, the levels can go up even while you play.

8: Firearms training + adv. = friend, basic + none = not so much. Even if you start as a private you may want to consider saving your starting ammo for a rainy day until you at least get free running to have better access to resources.

9: Diagnosis and the first NecroTech skill are also not so much mentioned good skills to have to level.

10: Stay away from first aid and don't touch it with a ten foot pole until you have some good skills.

11: Toolboxes are useful, pick one up while leveling for construction.

12: Watch the UBP or universal barricading plan on the wiki, these can point you in the way of a more likely safe house.

13: Don't try to take a zed head-on, even a leveled character can get ripped to pieces.

14: Going to a mall or fort may seem like a good idea but first look into whether they're zed or survivor controlled, but even then their ripe with PKer's.

15: There are several maps that can help you get from place to place, use them.

16: Undead? make your way to a designated revive point, outside of zed controlled territory.

17: Stay out of NecroTech (will have 50+ people), police departments and hospitals when you log off, these places are good targets for zed's.

18: Know when to get the hell out of dodge, don't stay in a zombie infested area over night until you can at least defend yourself, but even then it's risky.

19: One gun is NEVER enough.
If you intend on killing anyone, have multiple weapons loaded before you go out, this way you Don't have to spend your valuable AP on reloading while in combat.
It is also a good idea to carry a melee weapon with you just in case you run out of ammo and still want kill XP.

20: If someone PKs you, GET A SCREENSHOT AND REPORT IT!

21: Try to find a flak vest ASAP, as it helps against PKers, and if you get zombified it will help against being shot at...

22: Hand to hand Combat is useful, but rarely can kill a zed at full hp, try using a combined Firearm/CQC Tactic.

23: Get to know who you're camping with... friends and enemies are everywhere...

24: Always keep spare ammo, even if it means not killing a zed, as it'll be useful for when a zed is chewing your ass.....

25: When you're dead, don't panic. Try (if the zombie who killed you is in the same building) killing your killer. And you'll get XP.

26: The DNA scanner may seem like just an XP gaining tool, but it's great for getting to know your undead enemy. When you scan, the zombie's skills and group are listed, letting you use it to your advantage.

MDD Tip Pamphlet

An MDD officer hands you a pamphlet. You open it. It looks like an instruction booklet for survivors in Malton.
Greetings Malton survivors! We at the Malton Department of Defense want your stay in Malton to be as safe and pleasant as possible. That's why we've prepared a special collection of tips and advice from current and past members to help you out. While new players will find the following information extremely helpful, even veterans of Malton may find something of use. If you have some useful tips of your own you'd like to share, just leave a note on the talk page.

(5) Surviving in a Ghost Town

(6) General Tips

(1) Gaining XP

1) Find a pool cue, it has a decent hit ratio without any hand to hand skills, use it to hit someone, and then immediately heal them afterwards for quick XP. Those who start as a Firefighter, will want to use the fire axe they spawn with instead, as it never breaks. The diagnosis skill will allow you to identify people who need healing.

2) The NecroTech Employment skill is good to get early. DNA Extractors are another excellent source of XP.

3) Don't bother using firearms without at least advanced training. Without the training the hit ratio/AP investment is not worth it.

4) Focus on skills that increase hit ratio's such as the military skills, and skills that reduce day to day AP usage such as lurching gait and ankle grab.

5) Avoid the first aid skill early in the game. It reduces the possible XP you can earn from each wounded person.

6) Attacking a zombie as a zombie is a method of gaining XP while dead.

What to do in a zombie break-in:

BEFORE:

You should check your character's status. This could save you from getting killed. If you need health, ask for a FAK.

AFTER:

Well... this depends of how many zombies, the type of building and your level.

-Few zeds, non resource building, low level:

You can try to get some XPs from killing zombies, or just leave. A tower/motel/pub/church/etc... isn't worth needing to get revived again.

-Few zeds, resource building, low level:

If it's a mall or fort, BY YOUR MOTHER, kill them and get a pipe to Loosely barricade. Malls are important. VERY important. And other zombies can get it if you don't even secure the door (with memories of life they CAN open DOORs. With a loosely barricade at least you make sure they waste a few APs to get inside. If it's a NT, PD, or Hospital, well you must try to kill a zed, and then leave if you couldn't finish them.

-A lot of zeds, non resource building, low level

Leave. It's good for your health.

-A lot of zeds, resource building, low level

Mall/Fort: Do what you can do. All APs in killing zeds and loosely barricade (except 1 to free run to an adjacent building)

NT/PD/Hospital: There are other resource buildings, so hurt them a bit, heal comrades, then say bye to the building.
