Pickford Cinema

Description

Located in the northeastern end of Osmondville near the border of Vinetown, Pickford Cinema is a four-storey building standing in a quiet plaza. Once a movie house that provided entertainment to the blue collar workers of the area before the outbreak, Pickford is now known as a haven for horror and classic film fanatics. The marquee lights can often be seen flickering in the darkness for nights on end during the long horror marathons that take place inside.

History

Pickford Cinema is reputed to be one of Malton's oldest film houses. Riding on the prosperity of Osmondville's population and its relatively low land costs in the early 1900s, Henry and Samuel Pickford saw an opportunity to introduce the revolutionary picture house to Malton's social elite.

Construction of the theater commenced in 1908. Pickford Cinema was built to border on two scenic parks, giving moviegoers an opportunity to picnic nearby prior to screenings. The theater remained reasonably successful into the early 1930s.

As Osmondville's entertainment centers expanded further south in the district, however, the rivaling Wornel Cinema found itself in a more ideal location to attract crowds. Land values in north Osmondville fell almost in tandem with the expansion of the south, until Pickford Cinema found itself bordered by factories and auto shops. The hotly-contested decision to zone a cemetery adjacent to the theater's neighbouring parks was considered by many to be a blatant attempt to force the theater to shut its doors.

Ownership of the cinema passed through dozens of hands as the years progressed. A renaissance of sorts occurred when new owners began marketing the theater to the working population of Vinetown and the surrounding area. Low-budget films and all-night marathons took the place of big studio dramas. Though Pickford Cinema was reduced to a shadow of its former glory, the doors remained open, and the theater gained a cult following that thrived right up to the eve of the outbreak.

Barricade Policy

In order to ensure the safety of all patrons of Pickford Cinema and in accordance with the Osmondville Barricade Plan, barricades are usually kept at an extremely heavily barricaded status. Entrance to the cinema can usually be found via free running from the surrounding buildings on the east side of the cinema. Movies are just more enjoyable without an unruly zombie mob disrupting the screenings.

Current Status

Pickford Cinema is currently barricaded and the surrounding area is relatively free of zombie activity. With power being restored in early April 2008, Pickford Cinema has started the new season with a Vincent Price movie marathon. Survivors welcome!
