Description

Don't lose your head. Pray instead!

A small grey-stone building with stern gargoyles along its guttering. Somebody has spraypainted Nullum magnum ingenium sine mixtura dementiae fuit onto a wall (meaning There has been no great wisdom without an element of madness, a quotation by Lucius Annaeus Seneca, and the motto of Wykewood aesthete Oscar de Ment).

At one time, the aisles of this Tudor chapel were decorated with a stuffed bear and a stuffed tiger head, and somebody spraypainted And you shall know my name is The Lord... onto a wall.

History

St Fabian's Church was the Wyke family chapel, built in the centre of their land, and still a key historic landmark in the suburb. Sir Walter Wyke spent his last night as a free man in this chapel, praying fervently for salvation. Worldly salvation eluded him at any rate, as he was arrested by Henry VIII's sheriffs the following morning at dawn, taken to the Tower of London, and beheaded within a week. His body (sans head, which was displayed on a stick overlooking the Thames) was returned to the Wyke family's crypt in the neighbouring graveyard.
