Description

St. Romuald's Church2.jpg

St. Romuald's Church is an old abandoned church located in the suburb of Rolt Heights along the border with Pashenton to the west. The church, later known as the Church of the Starry Wisdom, was founded by Obed Fevin in 1940. Having returned from an expedition only 2 years prior, Fevin had become a wealthy man from the collection of gold trinkets he brought back with him. He used some of this newfound wealth to purchase St. Romauld's Church which had previously been a closed Mormons church. The new church though appeared to hardly be an improvement as some locals viewed it as a cult. Apparently Fevin had brought back with him teachings of a strange new religion which he had learned from Polynesian islanders, but this religion was said to be unlike anything anyone had ever heard of before, but the details were kept secret as only members of an exclusive club, the Esoteric Order of Dagon, were allowed to attend the church meetings.

Dislike and distrust of Fevin's new church gradually grew over the intervening months as Rolt Height residents began to complain about the unintelligible chanting heard coming from inside the church late at night and the mysterious robed figures seen entering or leaving the church after dark. In an area known for its strong religious beliefs this cult was seen as a affront. Then in early-1946, a series of local disappearances around the church was the final straw.

The Church of the Starry Wisdom, as seen prior to its "fall" at the hands of an angry mob.

What had started with missing pets, both cats and dogs, had escalated when a child was abducted while returning one night from a friend's house. While the police investigated the kidnapping residents had their own suspicions, and on the night of May 15th 1946, an angry mob formed outside the Gummer Arms and it was not long before they made their way down Whitlock Road to the church. Cultists waiting at the doors tried to prevent them from coming inside, but it was only a matter of minutes from the mob had broken down the doors and entered inside. What exactly they found inside is unclear, as to this day no one would speak of the matter and no newspaper reported anything about the incident. What was revealed is that the child was found dead; sacrificed on a altar as part of some pagan ritual. The mob, already outraged, went out of control. Those cultists that survived fled into the night while the church was destroyed. In the end it was the police who stopped the mob just before they were about to burn the building to the ground.

In the years that followed the church's closing no one heard anything further of the Esoteric Order of Dagon or Obed Fevin for that matter. Of course as to what happened to Fevin after his role in the cult was revealed is best left to be discussed elsewhere as he was not among the dead cultists from that night.

It should be noted that before the "Malton Incident" the church had once buried its dead at the small cemetery just to the south. This cemetery originally belonged to the Mormons who first built the church, but as no one is aware of anyone being buried at the cemetery since the Church of the Starry Wisdom was opened the cemetery has fewer graves than most locations in Rolt Heights. Locals have never attempted to bury their dead at this cemetery since that night in 1946.

Mandate

As a church, St. Romuald's is an ideal shelter for inexperienced survivors seeking to stay off the streets at night. Therefore the building's barricade policy is important, as it promotes keeping the barricades at a level that will allow survivors without Free Running entry. It is for this reason that, similar to hospitals or entry points, churches need to have their barricades maintain at a level lower than most other buildings. Survivors wishing to heal the injured are also encouraged to visit the church, as inexperienced survivors who cannot reach or enter hospitals in the area may instead be sheltering here. Have pity and heal the injured.

Barricade Policy

In accordance with the Rolt Heights Barricade Plan, this site is to be kept at Very Strongly Barricaded (VSB+2), in order to permit entry by rookies and those needing Free Running access. In the event of heavy zombie activity, barricades may be temporarily upgraded to EHB, but should be lowered back to VSB as soon as possible thereafter. The default barricade of VSB should be in place during times when zombie numbers are fewer than five within the neighboring 3x3 grid. An unspoken rule is that survivors assist with the barricades should they ever drop below VSB.

Should zombie numbers rise or reports of nearby resources buildings being overrun be confirmed, then barricades may be raised to EHB. At this time Free Running is essential to entering and departing the church. May God have mercy on those poor souls left trapped outside during such a time of strife.
