20090513 Suicide With A Vengeance

Necrofeelinya 18:45, 13 May 2009 (BST)

Suggestion type
Improvement

Suggestion scope
Depressed players in tall buildings

Suggestion description
Since we all seem to think suicide could use a bit of an upgrade, here's my idea.

1. Add descriptive message for people in room and outside building. Thus, As seen inside: "(player) leaps out a window to their death." As seen outside: "(player) leaps out an upper-story window to their death, making a sickening thud as they land."

2. Add a feature where you type in text in the speech box without hitting the speak button, then jump, and your character is seen by those inside to say a message while jumping, without the waste of an AP for doing so. Thus, a message might read "(player) said 'Grab mah manbagz harmanz' and then plunged out the window to his death." instead of the character spending an AP to say "Grab mah manbagz harmanz" and then another to jump.

3. Make suicides a targetable attack against players outside the building. Add the option to the attack dropdown menu. Immediate outdoor square only, 10% chance to hit, 20 damage, attacker has only a 10% chance of survival, and if he survives he loses 4/5ths of his Max HP and gets a Grievous Injury, similar in effect to Infectious Bite, costing 1 HP per move, but only for 20 moves. The bleed from Grievous Injuries would be accompanied by its own descriptive message, different from infectious bite, indicating that the character is horribly wounded and bleeding to death. FAKs cure the HP drain from Grievous Injuries same as Infectious Bites. If the character chooses to enter text in the speech box before a targeted attack like this, everyone outside the building hears it as well as those within, in the form of an all-caps scream. Successful attacks would result in their own descriptive messages... victims would get a message like "you suddenly look up, but too late as a blurred form crashes down on you with the weight of an anvil." Human players would see something like "You look on in shock as (player) leaps from a tall building onto (player) below. The devastating impact knocks both of them to the ground." Zombie players would get a message like "You watch dispassionately as (player) leaps from a nearby tall building onto (player) below. The sight of fresh meat sharpens your hunger." Both players would be knocked down by the impact in a successful attack. In the event of an unsuccessful attack, the character's dying scream, if any, would be accompanied by the normal outside descriptive message as shown in part 1.

Just to clarify: The computer knows who's outside the building, so here's how it would work. You know how the control panel presents attack options in a format of "(Attack button) (Dropdown target menu) with (weapon dropdown menu)"? Just add the names of targetable people outside the building to the dropdown target menu with an asterisk indicating that they're outside. If they're selected, the only available option on the weapon dropdown menu becomes "Suicide leap". The targets wouldn't appear in any way on the actual map until you've actually jumped and ended up outside, but this would represent someone leaning out the window in preparation for killing themselves fairly well.

4.And just because some zombies might want to munch on survivors who jump from a suicide attack and survive, but refuse to get up immediately, I'd also like to add a suggestion that the "feed on corpse" option should do 3 HP of damage to downed characters who haven't yet been either pricked with a syringe or syringed with a prick, so that you can kill someone who refuses to get up. Their bodies should be discernable from corpses by a slightly different descriptive message... something like "There is a gasping, wounded survivor on the ground in front of you". Then you eat them. There's nothing more appealing than mashed harman, a pained, writhing snack just waiting to be consumed. Yes, it makes the change even bigger. So what. It's meaty and delicious.

Summary: This change would add descriptive messages to suicides, combine saying your final words with the jump function in one descriptive message as a single move, and allow for an attempt at kamikaze jumping directly onto people out in the street, with a low chance of success and a near-guarantee of death but glorious results worth bragging about if you pull it off and live. And it would do it all without adding a single button to the control panel, just an added attack to the dropdown menu, so it wouldn't clutter the game screen. And it now allows for finishing off downed survivors and makes "feed on corpse" a much more useful and appealing skill. The X-Ray vision argument is minimized by not having the targets outdoors appear on the map, requiring the player to search his attack options to see who's there... akin to taking the effort to look out an upper-story window of a tall building, something they should logically be able to do, provided we don't have Spider-man zombies in the game scaling the walls to drag them outside once they peek from the balcony.

The only valid votes are Keep, Kill, Spam or Dupe. If you wish to abstain from voting, do not vote.

Keep Votes

  1. Author Keep - Because I like it, and because it sat on DevSug for a few days unnoticed with most of its discussion dedicated to things that weren't in the suggestion to begin with.--Necrofeelinya 18:53, 13 May 2009 (BST)
  2. Strong Keep - Adds atmosphere to the suicide. Would be cool see for shock value. --Thadeous Oakley 20:05, 13 May 2009 (BST)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill - Unnecessary - definite suicide option is needed so part 3 + 4 could be lost. I like the idea in part 1 though - thats a gd idea.--Betamaxx ◆◆◆ 15:05, 22 May 2009 (BST)
  2. Kill - Parts 3 and 4 are just bad suggestions. --Johnny Bass 19:54, 13 May 2009 (BST)
  3. Kill - For the reasons given here. --Pestolence(talk) 20:05, 13 May 2009 (BST)
    Plus, it's a multi-suggestion. --Pestolence(talk) 20:10, 13 May 2009 (BST)
Re: True, it's multi-suggestion, but part 4 makes no sense without part 3, and parts 1 and 2 are minor flavor adds that might not be considered worth the effort on their own. All together, it's rounded.--Necrofeelinya 20:52, 13 May 2009 (BST)
  4. Kill - Not terrible, but I think jumping off a building should be kept simple. Just a fall and a plop. 2 and especially 1, but the others, 3 and 4 are a no-no. --  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 22:10, 13 May 2009 (BST)

  10. Kill - Very complicated --Bjorn9486 14:24, 14 May 2009 (BST)
  11. Kill/Change - As Legion8 --Koryr 20:54, 14 May 2009 (BST)
  12. Kill - Part 1's a dupe, part 2's not necessary, part 3's too complex and part 4 requires the first three parts. --Blake Firedancer T E RNL? P.I.S.I.T. 22:04, 14 May 2009 (BST)
  13. Kill - Except for Bob. --Haliman - Talk 22:30, 14 May 2009 (BST)

Advice to Suggesters

  1. Adding options to your suggestion is not good practice. Others will not vote on the options, only the main body; please don't ask them to do so.
  2. Once you have posted your suggestion, it is considered complete. Altering the suggestion mechanics after voting has begun nullifies existing votes, and is considered an abuse of the suggestions system. Doing so will result in your suggestion being removed from the voting system to removed suggestions, where you can work out the details and resubmit later if you desire. It is preferred that you remove your own suggestion and resubmit a new version with changes, if changes are needed.
  3. "Notes" added for clarification purposes, and correcting spelling/typos are permitted. When considering adding a clarification note, it is often better for all parties involved, for the author to remove the suggestion and resubmit it with the clarification included for the voters who have already placed their votes.

Advice to Voters

  1. You are voting on Suggestions, not Users. The text of your vote should not personally attack or denigrate the user who has submitted it... no matter how ridiculous the idea. Flaming and/or Trolling will not be tolerated.
  2. Before voting please read the Suggestions Dos and Do Nots and Frequently Suggested Ideas Page to read about concepts that have been generally considered unworkable in the past. You do not need to follow the guidelines on these pages but they are worth consideration before casting a vote.
  3. One vote per user. No exceptions. You cannot use multiple wiki accounts to vote on a suggestion.
  4. To Vote, use the [edit] button at the top of the voting section, then enter your vote in the the proper format to the end of the relevant section (keep/kill/spam).
  5. It is strongly recommended that voters (especially in the kill/spam sections) justify their vote to help others understand the reason they disagree. Feedback helps new suggesters get a feel for what the community does and does not want included in Urban Dead, and a deeper understanding of the balance needed for a workable suggestion.
  6. Votes must include a signature in order to be considered valid votes. To sign a vote, use --~~~~. Please remember to sign your votes! Unsigned votes will be deleted after 30 minutes or when found.
  7. Each Suggestion will be open to voting for two (2) weeks, measured from the suggestion's Timestamp, unless it is a Dupe or Spam. If, at the end of that time, there are two thirds (2/3) more Keep votes than Kill votes, the Suggestion will be moved to the Peer Reviewed Suggestions page. Otherwise, the Suggestion will be moved to the Peer Rejected Suggestions page.
Rules for Discussions

Votes are NOT the place to discuss Suggestions. This page and archived suggestion pages only to be used for the Suggesting and subsequent Voting of these suggestions. If you wish to discuss the suggestion or vote here, please use this page's Talk page (Suggestion talk:20090513 Suicide With A Vengeance). Suggestions do not have to be submitted in order to discuss them. Developing Suggestions can be used to workshop possible suggestions before they are submitted.

Valid Votes
  • Keep, for Suggestions that you believe have merit.
  • Kill, for Suggestions that you believe do not have merit. If you need to discuss a rule fix, use the discussion page.
  • Spam, for the most ridiculous suggestions.
Suggestions can be removed with Spam votes as described on the cycling suggestions page. If the criterion described there are not fulfilled, the suggestion must remain for the whole two weeks.
Spam votes are not a "strong kill", they are simply here to prevent the utterly ridiculous from clogging up the system. If you do not like the idea, and it's not some crazy uber power or something else ridiculous, VOTE KILL, NOT SPAM. Spam votes will be counted as Kill when votes are tallied.
  • Dupe, for Suggestions that are exact or very close duplicates of previous suggestions. For a Dupe vote to be valid, a link must be provided to the original suggestion.
Dupe votes can be used to remove suggestions as described on the cycling suggestions page. Dupe votes will not be counted when votes are tallied.
  • Humourous, for suggestions that are obviously intended to be satirical, or of comedic value only.}}
Suggestions can be removed with Humourous votes as described on the cycling suggestions page. If the criterion described there are not fulfilled, the suggestion must remain for the whole two weeks.
Invalid Votes
  • Server Load and Programming Complexity are NOT very good Kill reasons. You are voting on the merit of the suggestion and whether or not you think it belongs in the game. Server load/complexity issues are up to Kevan to decide.
  • X should be implemented first is not a valid reason for a vote. You are voting on the merit of THIS suggestion, not how it compares to others.
  • Votes that do not have reasoning behind them are invalid. You MUST justify your vote.
Comments
  • Re may be used to comment on a vote. Only the original author and the person being REd can comment. Comments are restricted to a single comment per vote, and it is expected that Re comments be as short as possible. Reing every kill vote is considered abuse of the Re comment. A Re does not count as a vote, and any subsequent discussion not part of the Re comment should be held on the discussion page if there is any extended commenting.
  • Note is used by System Operators to invalidate trolling-based votes. Only Sysops may remove troll-based votes and they do so with a strikeout <s></s> in order to preserve the trolling removal for posterity. The voter may contest the strikeout with the Sysop that struck their vote out on the discussion page. Only a System Operator may remove a strikeout.
