20070921 A Voice From the Outside

Suggestion scope Everybody
Suggestion description
A random thought hit me as I fell asleep the other night: How come we don't hear more from the folks outside the quarantine zone?

Way I'm thinking of this: The military knows, of course, that there are survivors there. Malton is modestly-sized, and could easily be covered by more powerful transmitters outside the quarantine zone. Thus, to inspire the remaining survivors (or perhaps just to show that "something is being done") they utilize a civil affairs/psyops unit to broadcast a sort of "Voice of the Outside". Nothing much, just a way for Kevan to add another way of communicating to the playerbase and perhaps to advance the "plot" besides splotches of helo-to-base transmissions. Almost anything could be broadcast: News reports, Government Directives, music, sports scores, weather reports, who knows what else people will come up with?

Points to be made: 1. This could indeed use the same frequency-band (25.9x) as the current External Military reports; or perhaps a different one, it's not really substantive to the thrust of the suggestion. 2. Kevan may indeed already have this planned. Then again, maybe not. Maybe the idea hasn't occurred to him just yet. If a positive review of such an idea by people here encourages him, I don't see that as a bad thing.

  1. Interesting flavour Gets a keep from me.--Seventythree 23:45, 21 September 2007 (BST)
  2. Keep Meh. As below.--Wooty 00:08, 22 September 2007 (BST)
  3. Keep Me thinks this is good... ~A`Blue`JellyTME*V*I*L*? 00:14, 22 September 2007 (BST)
  4. Weak keep - Not that exciting, but why not? If Kevan doesn't like it, he can not implement it, and if people feel it limits creativity, they can call the broadcasts from outside deliberate garbage from further "insane lunatics". --Pgunn 00:47, 22 September 2007 (BST)
  5. Keep - As above. Also, or in place of the radio transmissions, some of those useless newspapers might have similar information from outside. I might actually read them, once in awhile. --Steakfish 01:53, 22 September 2007 (BST)
  6. Keep - As above. Good idea, but chances are Kevan is already planning something like this. And if he isn't, then it's still worth his time to look at. --Kikashie ELT 02:34, 22 September 2007 (BST)
  7. Keep - If it's kept vague. --Sonofagun18 06:56, 22 September 2007 (BST)

  11. Keep - Author vote. --Penta 18:19, 22 September 2007 (BST)
  12. Awesome-Keep - It'd be fun to hear "a sports show" or "Information about the war in Iraq" every once in a while. --Officer 123satsitx 20:17, 22 September 2007 (BST)
  13. Jeep I understand ShadowScope's point, yes, there are many people way out of normal zombie situations (SPARTAN-IIs, GDI and Nod, the USCMC and Aliens, Stormtroopers in present-day Malton), but I'd like more flavor. Glenstone 20:20, 22 September 2007 (BST)
  14. An Even Weaker Keep - Shall I be the tiebreaker? I believe ShadowScope has a good point, along with some of the others voting on this suggestion. However, although it's better for the community as a whole to create the "plot" of this game for themselves and for those around them through roleplaying, I wouldn't mind a few random spurts of information from the "outside" world every now and then. Strictly as flavor, though.--Private Mark 03:06, 23 September 2007 (BST)
  15. I like the idea, but SS makes a great point - However, the broadcasts could be de-canonized through some subverted use of logic, so i say, if kevan likes the idea, i'm all behind it. BoboTalkClown 03:46, 23 September 2007 (BST)
  16. Keep Could actually broadcast real-world events, making UD educational! That and it's realistic. --Thragnor 23:03, 23 September 2007 (BST)
  17. Keep - An excellent way to add some flavour to the game. --Themanwhocares4 22:40, 25 September 2007 (BST)
  18. Keep - I like it!--Reflow 23:31, 28 September 2007 (BST)

Kill Votes

  1. Sad to say, according to the Escapist, Kevan actually hates canonizing any part of Urban Dead. He wants people to create the game however they want. Trenchcoating, DEMs, Vampire Hunters, Death Cultists, Galactic Empire Stormtroopers, etc. You can roleplay the game however you want, and if other people roleplay differently, you can just call them insane lunatics and don't care about it. I think this would be the main reason AGAINST having these radio broadcasts, as they can interefere with the people's ability to view Malton however they want to view Malton. Flavor is okay, but too much flavor...well, that just limits creativity.--ShadowScope 00:27, 22 September 2007 (BST)
  2. Weak kill - I see ShadowScope's point, plus there'd have to be a whole lot of creativity poured into it frequently to make it interesting after the novelty has worn off. Otherwise, I think it's a great idea.--Actingupagain 01:29, 22 September 2007 (BST)
  3. Kill Plenty of flavour as is. Sockem 02:10, 22 September 2007 (BST)
  4. Kill - As ShadowScope and Actingupagain. --Saluton 03:56, 22 September 2007 (BST)
  5. Kill - External Military doesn't care about citizens trapped in the city. It's more like a social experiment for them and they only act as spectators. Helo-to-base is exactly the only things that malton citizens could only hear --~~~~ [talk] 09:59, 22 September 2007 (BST)
  6. Kill - External Military broadcasts provide useful, in-game information that no other individual, or non-zerging group can collect. Your suggestion however would duplicate what in-game players already provide... radio spam >:) -- boxytalk • 10:55 22 September 2007 (BST)

  16. Above. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 23:11, 27 September 2007 (BST)
  17. Kill - One of the scarier things about zombie movies is the characters just not knowing what the status of the outside world is. Are the rage monkeys only in Britain? Are there flesh eaters on the islands of Lake Superior? Are the dead just rising and attacking this farmhouse or is it the whole world? Not knowing is good. --Nosimplehiway 23:43, 28 September 2007 (BST)
