20070928 More Knives

Suggestion description
The knife's damage per AP is the second best in the game when you don't have any combat skills (the best is pool cue, but that breaks after a couple of hits), but after you get Hand to Hand Combat, the fire axe bypasses the knife in efficency, so the knife mostly of use to newbies. But therein lies a problem.

The only place where knives can be obtained effectively (over 1% chance of finding) is in the Mall Hardware store, which requires Free Running to get inside and Shopping to be able to choose the store. Even then the percentage is only 3%. After getting Bargain Hunting the chance increases to 7%. For comparison, a fire axe can be found in Fire Departments (which are often at VSB) at 6% and generally other easy places.

I suggest that you would be able to find knives in Hospitals (scalpels, 5%), Hotels and Motels and Mansions' kitchens and dining-rooms (kitchen-knives, 4%).

Keep Votes

  1. keep - I would go as far as to suggest extending this more buildings and making it 5% Bars have knives, homes have knives, schools have lots of knives... the list could go on and on! The only problem I can see would be if it diluted the find rate for FAKs in hospitals or guns/ammo in PD's and Forts!--Honestmistake 16:43, 28 September 2007 (BST)
Schools and forts already have knives (although at a low rate). And in hospitals it can dilute the find-rate of newspapers, not FAKs :). --Midianian|T|T:S|C:RCS| 16:46, 28 September 2007 (BST)
  2. Keep Maybe less than 5%, but I like the idea. I had no idea the find rates were so low for knives..--Wooty 17:15, 28 September 2007 (BST)
  3. Keep Heck, make the percentage even higher. It's not like giving newbies the ability to do minimal damage will unbalance the game. --Jon Pyre 17:51, 28 September 2007 (BST)
  4. Keep - I never used a knife because I never found any early on. Lend newbs a fighting chance. ----MrCoolantSpray 18:05, 28 September 2007 (BST)
  5. Keep - Yes. Apart from anything else knives are amongst the most ubiquitous tools in any society. You could make a clear-cut case for knives being found in any building in UD.--SeventythreeTalk 18:53, 28 September 2007 (BST)
Unless you include paper cutters and similar, I disagree. Screwdrivers, scissors, staplers, at the very least, all are much more common than knives. --Pgunn 19:38, 28 September 2007 (BST) Non author re -- boxytalk • 00:14 29 September 2007 (BST)
  6. Keep - i like it.--'BPTmz 19:21, 28 September 2007 (BST)

  8. Keep - DON'T VOTE DUPE JUST TO VOTE DUPE!!! Sorry about the screaming, but that massivly POs me. BoboTalkClown 22:20, 28 September 2007 (BST)
  9. Keep - Almost forgot. Author vote. --Midianian|T|T:S|C:RCS| 22:21, 28 September 2007 (BST)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill - Reduces diversity in early weapons. "The best weapon for an unskilled survivour" being not being super common is not a bad thing. --Pgunn 18:49, 28 September 2007 (BST)
Axes would still be more common than knives and they remain efficent even after buying skills. This would actually increase diversity in early weapons by weakening the axe's position as the most common melee weapon. --Midianian|T|T:S|C:RCS| 19:26, 28 September 2007 (BST)
  2. Kill - Don't encourage newbies to engage in combat. The only classes that are good at it (cop, private, firefighter) start with the weapons they need. --Steakfish 19:15, 28 September 2007 (BST)
  3. Kill - NO to knives in Hospitals. Adding more findable items decreases chance to find other items from that location. Also i think there's a Dupe, but too lazy to find. --~~~~ [talk] 19:33, 28 September 2007 (BST)
  4. Kill - If you want to be more effective in combat, then take a class that starts with good weapons or increased combat efficiency to start. There is no need to increase the percentages --Ryiis 19:56, 28 September 2007 (BST)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Dupe. Try again. --•▬ ▬••▬ • •••• •▬ ▬•▬• ▬•▬ #nerftemplatedsigs 19:56, 28 September 2007 (BST)
  2. DuPe - Meh, close enough.--  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 20:59, 28 September 2007 (BST)
How close do the suggestions have to be for the dupe to be valid? I think this is different enough not to warrant a dupe. Could someone clarify? Or is it just enough that three voters think it's close enough? --Midianian|T|T:S|C:RCS| 22:00, 28 September 2007 (BST)
There is a resonable chance that dupe isn't close enough, so don't worry. It's a good suggestion.--  AHLGTG THE END IS NIGH! 22:03, 28 September 2007 (BST)
  3. Dupe - This really is close enough. Besides which, arn't scalpels already in the game, found in hospitals? (Not really sure, I've got me a knife, so they're on autochuck these days) -- boxytalk • 00:13 29 September 2007 (BST)

  4. Dupe I think it's close enough. Kevan, ultimately, has final say and the basic idea is to get knives out into more locations then what are currently available. It's unlikely, were Kevan to include a suggestion like this that he would limit it to JUST hospitals.--Pesatyel 04:06, 29 September 2007 (BST)
