20071019 Pass the Pipe

Jon Pyre 16:43, 19 October 2007 (BST)

Suggestion type
Improvement

Suggestion scope
The length of pipe item

Suggestion description
Don't worry, this isn't a drug suggestion.

Pipes can be used to loosely barricaded doors by those that don't have Construction. So basically, it can give a newbie a teensy amount of protection. But let's look at where you can find pipes:

Factories (6.4%/9.2%), Power Stations (3.3%/3.6%), Warehouses (8%/10%), Junkyards (1%?), Storehouses (?%)

Newbie characters have no reason to search any of these on a regular basis. In fact, the only people that will find them are those looking for generators and fuel. Since this altruistic act doesn't provide anything in the way of XP only advanced players, those who've had Construction for a long while, find pipes.

To solve the problem of only advanced characters finding a newbie item I suggest the following:

Make it so if you click on a pipe in a building that has barricades you lean the pipe next to the door. This is reflected in the description as: "A pipe leans against the wall by the door". When the barricades are fully down and the door is shut players without Construction will have a button "Bar Door". This would use up the pipe. Only one pipe could be left in a building at a time and if the building is ransacked the pipe is lost.

This would allow an high level character to find a pipe and rather than discard it say "I'll set it up in this building here so some newbie can use it to make loose barricades, if everything more secure is overbarricaded." This would also let a newbie member of a safehouse help after a break in: "I may not have much in the way of skills but at least I did 15 damage to the zombie and barred the door with that pipe someone left"

  11. Keep - Because this isn't trading, and it isn't overpowered, because it takes like 3 AP to break down a loosly barricaded door... BoboTalkClown 21:15, 19 October 2007 (BST)

  19. Keep - I made the original pipe suggestion, and I find this Newbie-helping.--John Verdana 05:18, 21 October 2007 (BST)
  20. Keep - To those that say that the pipe is just useless (WanYao), well, shut up. The pipe is a part of the game, and this gives it at least some amount of usage. May I remind you of already useless items? Crucifixes, Wirecutters, etc. Why not give the Pipe a boost? If it is so useless, then what harm does it do to give it's uselessness more variability? --O'Sheehy 20:23, 21 October 2007 (BST)
  21. Keep - Res Ipsa Loquiter (I think it was anyways)--Etherdrifter 12:27, 22 October 2007 (BST)
  22. Keep - Good idea, plus, who the hell cares about pipes anyway? Loose barricades aren't a problem to any MoL zed, even those with absolutely no attack accuracy enhancers. Crazylilvietguy 01:23, 23 October 2007 (BST)
  23. Keep - It's not trading, it can't really benefit zergers, you can't stockpile them for abuse, and it does assist the newbies. It's also no real threat to zombies and doesn't throw off balance.--Kolechovski 15:15, 23 October 2007 (BST)
  24. Keep - I never liked the Pipe-in-door change. This sort of makes it a little better...A little --Liam Degen 19:06, 24 October 2007 (BST)
  25. Keep Hmmm, That will make it more useful... ~A`Blue`JellyTME*V*I*L*? 03:50, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
  26. Keep - Eh, makes sense, no? -J. A. 23:30, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Kill Votes

  1. Kill - Awesome for gameplay, but not realistic - only one pipe can be left in a building at a time? Call the pipe police! There are two here! If you can find a more story-plausible reasoning for this, I'd be happy to say keep. --Pgunn 19:22, 19 October 2007 (BST)
    • Re Why only one generator? Or one radio? Why only about a dozen pieces of art when most buildings could hold hundreds? --Jon Pyre 20:14, 19 October 2007 (BST)
  2. Kill - Somehow this does not seem right. -- John RubinT! ZG FER 22:38, 19 October 2007 (BST)
  3. Weak Kill - I have mixed feelings about pipes as barricades. I know that when I'm playing my Zombie character, and happen upon a building that is only Loosely Barricaded, I ALWAYS break it down and check inside for Harmanz to make hambargarz from. I know lots of other Zombies do this, as well. Then again, even Loosely Barricaded buildings provide decent protection from Zombies that don't have Memories of Life, since barricading automatically closes the door. I think they generally provide too much of a false sense of security. Making pipes more available to newbies might make some put off buying Construction. --Steakfish 00:04, 20 October 2007 (BST)
  4. Kill - The whole thing was meant to be a rare occasional thing. --The Grimch U! E! WAT! 01:16, 20 October 2007 (BST)
  5. Kill - It is trading -- boxytalk • 01:31 20 October 2007 (BST)
  6. No reason to search? Uh, how about FOR the pipes? Factories also contain fireaxes, fuel cans, crowbars and generators. Seems a more logical thing to do would be to just make pipes more readily available. I mean the chances of finding a pipe someone left are rather small.--Pesatyel 03:04, 20 October 2007 (BST)
    • Re Why search for pipes and not gain XP when you could gain XP and get Construction? It doesn't make sense to search for pipes. --Jon Pyre 04:43, 20 October 2007 (BST)
What does XP really have to do with anything? Wasted AP searching instead of killing/healing? Whoopty do, I don't think the time spent searching is significant when the locations the pipe is found in have very good find %. And you ignored the rest of what I said that pipes would't be there that often since some jerk would come along and do something with it just because they can. In other words it WOULDN'T be as useful for newbies as you want it to be because ANYONE can use the pipe in that fashion. Maybe if Construction automatically negated pipe use or something.--Pesatyel 10:02, 23 October 2007 (BST)
  7. Kill - I don't like it -- this is like,a extra-level of barricade that when all else are down,to zeds.A uneffective "extra loose barricade"(seraching) isn't really that useful.--Perne 04:42, 20 October 2007 (BST)
  8. Kill - I'm down with Steakfish on this. The lead pipe barricade was actually a bad idea in the first place because it leads to more newbie survivor deaths. Safer to sleep inside an open, ranscked building than a loosely 'caded one! And, sorry, but I also agree with those who see this as item trading... But it's not worthy of a spam vote IMO because there is a certain merit to the idea. Just not enough to overcome the problems for me. --WanYao 14:29, 20 October 2007 (BST)
  9. Kill - Agreed WanYao, the pipe thing is just a waste of AP and it gives people a false sense of security. But I wouldn't go so far as to call it trading. -- WOOT 01:54, 21 October 2007 (BST)
  10. Weak Kill - Though it isn't quite trading, its pretty close. Additionally, a loose barricade isn't going to keep zombies out of a resource building. Antitribu 23:15, 23 October 2007 (BST)

Spam/Dupe Votes

  1. Spam - No trading functions, especially when it comes to barricades. Also new players don't know where to search for anything, it's part of the game but, fyi when I was new I often had way too many pipes and newspapers.--Karekmaps?! 19:29, 19 October 2007 (BST)
Re Newspapers come from hospitals. Why the heck were you finding pipes? But beyond that this isn't really a trading function in that you don't ever give someone else an item. This is a building improvement function, like installing a generator. --Jon Pyre 20:14, 19 October 2007 (BST)
Re - No it's not, it's a way to guarantee every building has a barricade cheap. Low level players have to spend extra AP to barrricade, it's not just 1 AP. Your suggestion gets rid of the search AP.--Karekmaps?! 20:19, 19 October 2007 (BST)
  2. Spam - No trading. Sockem 21:09, 19 October 2007 (BST)
  3. Spam – Trading. ᚱᛁᚹᛖᚾ 04:32, 20 October 2007 (BST)
  4. Spam - the results of a fever dream. Trading, by any other name. --Funt Solo Scotland flag.JPG 11:42, 20 October 2007 (BST)
  5. Spam - Trading. Seriously, if there's one thing in the game which does not need to get easier it's barricading. --The Hierophant 20:25, 20 October 2007 (BST)
